This year, Marin County homeowners in unincorporated areas may take advantage of an amnesty program for un-permitted second units (so-called "Granny Units").  The goal of the program is to increase the number of housing units and ensure that the units are in good order and meet basic living requirements.
The criteria to take advantage of this program (which puts the price of the process at 1/2 that of normal) includes:

san rafael: Marin Human Society Turns 100 Years Old - 05/31/07 04:48 AM
What do dogs, cats, song birds, chickens, rabbits, and turtles all have in common?  A second chance provided by the Marin Humane Society ("MHS")!
MHS turns 100 this year and is celebrating that milestone on June 3rd with festivities for all ages.   There will be contests (e.g., biggest dog, smallest dog, best dog singer (like American Idol?), demonstrations, a group dog walk at 10:00 a.m., drawings, and more.
On a personal note, about 4 years ago, my family adopted a dog from the MHS that had been rescued from a shelter in the Fresno area.  Carmen is the greatest dog I have ever had the pleasure to know.  … (0 comments)

san rafael: Marin County Population Growth Surges in Novato - 05/04/07 03:27 AM
As noted in a recent news report in the Marin Independent Journal, growth rates in Marin were relatively low over the past year.  Overall, population growth was 0.9 percent last year (for a total population of 255,982).
In Novato, however, the population grew by 2.4 percent to 52,426, largely due to new housing in Hamilton Field and Atherton Ranch.  Over the past seven years, Hamilton has seen over 2,100 homes built.  The large increase in population (mainly young families) has resulted in rapid increases in the number of children attending Hamilton Elementary School, which has grown from 365 children to 488 … (0 comments)

Marin County Neighborhoods -- Terra Linda and Marinwood, San Rafael
At the northern portion of San Rafael, sit two neighborhoods worth a long look for both young families and those thinking of downsizing--Terra Linda and Marinwood.  These neighborhoods are established communities with history.  There are still original owners who tell stories about how Joseph Eichler would tour the neighborhood offering opinions to homeowners regarding their landscaping, home maintenance decisions, and other musings.  Meanwhile, there has been lots of turnover over the past few years as many long-time residents cashed out and a younger demographic began making its presence felt.  Terra Linda and … (2 comments)
