topolino: Employee killin' me: All he wants to do is blog, talk on the cell and nap - 07/11/07 09:28 AM
First, I want to state that King of the House, Inc is a smaller firm. There are basically two employees, me and I own it, and the hired hand who is of Italian descent, Mr. Topolino Stromboli. I have spent lots of money on training this employee. He is supposed to do office work and some inspection duties. He is fully trained as a "certified attic technician" acronym C.A.T. On top of that, he is certified as a rodent intervention specialist. And he is about two weeks away from being certified in quick books. The point is, I have spared no … (35 comments)

topolino: Lummi Island - 05/11/07 10:56 AM

Earlier, I wrote about the ferry ride, on the Little Chief, to and from Lummi Island -- which is part of the San Juan Islands and located near Bellingham, WA.  Lummi Island has a tiny population. At the sign that welcomes you, they claim just over 816 residents and the 2000 census only boosted that to 822 folks. Obviously, this island, which is gorgeous on a summer day, really does operate on "island time." It is a haven for artists and, in the summer every year, they have a weekend where those of us from the mainland ferry over to … (3 comments)

topolino: Seven bucks and six minutes - 05/11/07 10:31 AM
So, how far can you get in ten minutes, for $7.00. The most populous island community near Bellingham, Washington is Lummi Island. Now, it is not very populous, but it has a thriving island community. I will write more about Lummi Island, with some photos, in another blog. This time, I am writing about the Little Chief. That is the ferry that takes passengers from the mainland over to Lummi. It is a tiny ferry but manages to keep the economy of Lummi Island moving. When I went across this morning, for a home inspection, I was sharing the boat with … (0 comments)

topolino: Bellingham WA #2 on "Cities ranked and rated" list - 05/10/07 04:42 PM
I saw another member's post regarding the nation's best cities. I was just at a meeting this morning, with the mayor, and he said that Bellingham came out #2 in the nation as far as the best places to live, right behind Gainesville, Florida. Obviously, there are different lists for different folks but Bellingham sure has gotten its share of fame compared to the hideaway it was back when I was a kid. No wonder the real estate market is so strong. The story, on Bellingham's ranking, is in the local newspaper, and the link to the story is below.

topolino: Say goodbye to payroll taxes now! - 05/05/07 04:37 AM
One of the most costly aspects of business, if you have employees, is paying the payroll taxes that are associated with such staff: social security, Medicare, federal and state unemployment taxes, L&I. And the government takes a grim view on ducking such taxes. But there is a loophole! Despite the bureaucrats hard-nosed stance on all the taxes, their enforcement arm has yet to come up with a way to force you to pay such taxes on non-human employees. The solution: Hire and train capable non-human employees. For example, at my firm King of the House Inc, take the highly trained "rodent intervention specialist", Topolino … (6 comments)

topolino: Would this legally make the bathroom also a bedroom? - 04/27/07 06:10 PM

Sometimes it is amazing where certain individuals choose to sleep. So, in this case, could this bathroom legally be classified as a bedroom? And could the sink be considered a bed that is thrown in for free? It seems to me this would be really uncomfortable and it makes it hard for other people to wash too!
Thanks for looking,
