washington state: Oops, Another Good Reason To Go On The Roof - 12/31/13 12:37 AM
I had a surprise at a house, in Bellingham, a few weeks ago. That surprise brought home to me the importance of an inspector walking the roof when it is possible to do so. The surprise, also, reinforced the importance of hiring a home inspector. The subject house was in a wooded area and there was a good view of the front of the roof but, as a result of the trees, no view from the ground was possible at the back. Trees obscured the view of the sides as well.
From the front, roof access was not difficult so I climbed … (5 comments)

The Bellingham Technical College four week home inspector training program always includes not only 120-hours of fundamentals training but, also, 40 hours of field training. Washington State laws require potential students to successfully complete not only the fundamentals training but to complete the field training as well.
The field training includes small groups of students, we split them up, going out with an instructor who is a licensed home inspector. Each student, to pass this part of the course, must turn in a report that meets the state standards of practice for home inspection.
The students are responsible for inspection and reporting on all … (0 comments)

The field training includes a small group of students going out with an instructor. Each student, to pass the course, must turn in a report that meets the state standards of practice for home inspection.

washington state: Washington State Sales Tax and Canada - 03/15/11 12:57 PM
I was attending a Washington State Home Inspector Licensing Board meeting in Seattle today. Some of the discussions, and cost saving measures the state has implemented, are reminders that the state is having some pretty serious financial problems. Then, on the way home, on the radio I heard the director of the State Department of Revenue offer a "forgiveness" program to businesses that owe penalties and back taxes. Boy, that is a change of pace for that agency compared to years gone by. My accountant has always told me that, of all the government bodies, do not get seriously sideways with the IRS or the State Department … (5 comments)

washington state: Washington State Home Inspector Training -- Two Weeks Away - 02/13/11 03:20 AM
After a hiatus of a few months, due to the holidays, the next Fundamentals of Home Inspection course, and field training, at Bellingham Technical College begins on Monday, February 28.
The classroom training takes a student through the fundamentals of home inspection training (mandated 120 hour course) and through the 40 hours of approved field training. The student who successfully completes the course (absences not allowed) is ready to sit for the state licensing exam.
This training is, largely so, tailored to Washington State. But we have had a number of students from out of the state come to our classes … (1 comments)

washington state: Home Inspector Field Training -- Washington State Approved - 02/06/11 08:22 AM
In Washington State any potential new home inspector must not only complete 120-hours of Fundamentals of Home Inspection training but he or she must also complete 40-hours of field training.
The field training has certain requirements: The student must be on-site with a licensed and experienced inspector. The, minimum five, inspections must be of all elements of the house, not just a partial inspection. At the end of the process, the student must turn in a report on each house and that report must meet the state standards of practice.
Some potential inspectors get this training by paying experienced inspectors for … (0 comments)

washington state: Washington State Home Inspector Education -- Online Classes - 02/05/11 11:57 AM
This post is in the category of "never answer the same question twice." I get this question a lot. People get confused by information they stumble upon when surfing the Internet. I think it is time to eliminate confusion as to what is approved Washington State home inspector education. I am contacted on this matter because I am the lead instructor of home inspection at Bellingham Technical College. The question is always much the same, words change a bit. Hopefully the printed exchange below will lead to less head scratching on the part of those who want to enter the field of … (3 comments)

washington state: Never Answer The Same Question Twice -- Washington State Home Inspector Training - 12/28/10 10:28 AM
This post is yet another effort on my part in response to Bob Stewart's "it's raining" blog. He has created a challenge: Sanitize and post some past client Emails and responses. The goal is to provide, to the public, easily accessible online information. The questions in this Email, other than people asking on an ongoing basis about the cost of a home inspection, are inquiries that I get over and over again as a result of being involved with a home inspector training program that is Washington State approved.
The initial Email question to me is at the top. My Email reply follows.
