port aransas: Mysterious Tar Balls Come Ashore On Some Texas Beaches - 07/28/09 03:03 AM
PORT ARANSAS, Texas - The coast is clear for now in Port A, but some South Texas Beaches have seen tar balls come ashore during the past week.  Large oil/tar blobs were a nuisance on S Padre Island late last week.  As the Brownsville Herald reports, all remnants have since been removed.
Smaller two to three inch diameter blobs were seen at the Padre Island National Seashore on Sunday.  The Corpus Christi Caller Times reports that the Texas General Land Office (GLO) has clean up crews working on the beaches.

port aransas: Mustang Island Offshore Wind Farm Lease Awarded By Texas GLO - 07/18/09 01:03 AM
PORT ARANSAS, Texas - The Texas General Land Office (GLO) announced in a Press Release on Thursday that a newly formed company Baryonyx successfully won the bidding for two offshore wind farm leases.  The leases are located off the coasts of Mustang Island and South Padre Island and could become the biggest offshore wind farms in the nation.
The Corpus Christi Caller Times reported that the 500+ foot tall wind turbines would be visible from the shore of Mustang Island.

WASHINGTON— The Texas Department of Transportation will receive a federal grant worth $7,200,000 to purchase a new ferry boat for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Tuesday. The new ferry boat will allow for expanded passenger and vehicle ferry service between Port Aransas and the mainland.
“This new boat will improve ferry service by allowing for expanded operations and reducing delays in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel,” Sen. port aransas: Port Aransas Hosts Largest Saltwater Fishing Tournament In Texas - 07/13/09 01:22 AM
PORT ARANSAS, Texas - The oldest and largest saltwater fishing tournament on the Texas coast took place this weekend.  The 74th Annual Deep Sea Roundup brought record crowds and perhaps a few record fish.  The Corpus Christi Caller Times Michelle Christenson captured the event with some great photos that are posted at Caller.com
The tournament is sponsored by the Port Aransas Boatmen with proceeds going to youth-related activities and scholarships for Port Aransas High School Graduates.

port aransas: Port Aransas Will Be Home For New $19.5M Marine Research Facility - 07/04/09 03:29 AM

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Plans were recently announced for a three-story, state-of-the-art, eco-friendly research facility on the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) campus.  The building will be headquarters for the Mission Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) and provide additional offices and labs for UTMSI.  Construction is expected to start later this year and will take 15 months to complete.  Details are available in this Corpus Christi Caller Times article.

PORT ARANSAS, Texas - There is cause for celebration.  It was reported yesterday that Governor Perry has signed into law HB 2276 which amends the State Tax Code to include Port Aransas along with Galveston and South Padre Island in the cities to which special state hotel tax allocations apply.  
Simply put, Port A will now receive a portion of the State's Hotel Occupancy Tax Revenue to clean and maintain public beaches.  This will provide an ongoing revenue stream that will help the City fund beach maintenance operations and assist with erosion response projects.  Initial estimates suggest that this could … (1 comments)

port aransas: Texas Governor Signs "Coastal Friendly" Windstorm Insurance Bill - 06/21/09 03:34 AM
PORT ARANSAS, Texas - Coastal residents are breathing a sigh of relief.  Proposed changes to the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) that were being discussed at the beginning of the 81st Legislative Session were punitive to say the least.  In the end, a ten-member Conference Committee found a compromise that some are calling a major victory for the coast.  The Corpus Christi Caller Times has a good editorial on the process and AP reports that the Governor has signed the bill into law.

port aransas: Nueces County Is Named "Birdiest" County On The Gulf Coast - 06/16/09 01:18 AM
PORT ARANSAS, Texas - The Corpus Christi Caller Times reported yesterday that we remain one of the "birdiest" places in the US.  
"Local birders from the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi and Coastal Bend Audubon Society counted 217 species in Corpus Christi within a three-day period, down from 241 spotted in 2008.   San Diego, Calif., placed second with 198 species counted.  Nueces County was named the Birdiest Coastal County with 238 species spotted, down from 253 spotted last year."
