Knox County has several great parks but my new favorite which I visited for the first time today is the Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in east Knox County along the French Broad River. Located just about 15 minutes from downtown Knoxville, this 360 acres of unspoiled landscapes is a great respite from the regular world.

The long awaited 2007 Sales Report for the greater Knoxville Tennessee area is finally available. It shows the numbers for the greater Knoxville area were't too shabby at all. Sales volume declined 10.8% overall but average sales prices increased the usual 3-5% coming in a 4.4% for 2007. Days on market increased 9 days from 83 in 2006 to 92 in 2007. 2008 has already started out pretty strong for January so I look for 2008 to be somewhere between 2006 and 2006. Last night in Cleveland Ohio, The University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team won their 7th national championship defeating Rutger's by a score of 59 to 46. Superstar Sophmore Candace Parker was the Vol's leading scorer with 17 points including 6 consecutive free throws in the game's final two minutes. Recently a long simmering, local political pot finally boiled over when the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled that Tennessee counties with a charter form of government could indeed legally vote to limit the number of terms an office holder could serve. In 1994 Knox County voters voted overwhelmingly to limit the number of terms an office holder could serve to not more than 2. The next year the Tennessee Attorney General issued an opinion that vote was invalid. In horse & wagon days covered bridges were all over the eastern United States. They were covered for two reasons; one was to protect the bridge infrastructure from decay and rot since they didn't have today's modern weatherproofing materials, and another was to keep from spooking the horses if they looked over the side and saw the rushing waters below. These relics from yesteryear are fast disappearing and in my area it's a pretty rare sight, sort of like the ferries and grist mills that used to dot this area.
