animal lover: 3 Tips For Picky Pets! - 07/01/13 11:36 PM

A friend of mine forwarded me an article about Picky Pets and I thought I would share the highlights:
Nearly every animal has moments of food fussiness.  Here are 3 tips to entice even the most finicky eaters:
1.  Make it tasty.  Add warm water to food, heat it in a pan or mix in a small amount of vet-approved herbs with heavy scents.
2.  Avoid hovering.  Your pet will  notice that you are watching and he will stop eating to get treats instead.
3.  Don't worry.  Healthy Dogs and cats can miss a meal or … (13 comments)

HAWS Shelter seeks help in cat hoarding cases By JCPG Staff
March 20, 2013 | (0) Comments
Fifty cats from one owner, most of them sick and suffering were recently brought to HAWS, the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County.
The shelter is asking for the community’s help, and for residents to take action to prevent further occurrences of animal hoarding. When is “many” considered too many? Animal hoarding, as defined in this circumstance, is when an owner/caretaker has more pets than they are able to care for properly. HAWS’ Spay-Neuter Initiative Program (SNIP) and Project Guardian both offer free … (9 comments)

animal lover: What's Poisoning Our Pets? The Top Pet Toxins of 2012 - 03/20/13 11:42 PM
In 2012, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) in Urbana, Illinois, handled more than 180,000 cases about pets possibly exposed to poisonous substances—and some breeds seemed to make up a lot more of those calls than others.
Nearly 14,000 of APCC’s 2012 calls were from worried pet parents of Labradors. Domestic shorthair cats were involved in approximately 10,000 cases (the second-most popular breed involved in APCC calls). Mixed-breed dogs (8,000 cases), Chihuahuas (4,833 cases), Golden Retrievers (4,819 cases) and Yorkshire Terriers (3,800 cases) rounded out the top six.
No matter what kind of pets they had, … (9 comments)

My sister gave me this book and said I would love it.  I sure did!  Of course I love the fact that it is about a cat, but it offers soooo much more too!  Please read Making Rounds With Oscar by David Dosa, M.D.  Here is a summary of the book.  They thought he was just a cat.
When Oscar arrived at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rhode Island in 2005, he was a just cute little guy with attitude. He loved to stretch out in a puddle of sunlight and chase his tail until he was dizzy. … (17 comments)

TANK - A DOG STORY   They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie, as I looked at him lying in his pen. The shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly.
I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street. But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk … (22 comments)
