World Heart Day is September 29...Please Take Care of Yours

Since 2014 I’ve been taking World Heart Day to remind everyone to not only take care of your heart but for YOU to be the one to listen to what your body is telling you.

About 610,000 people die of heart disease in
The United States each year.

Each year I urge others to pay attention to what their body is telling them. If one person starts to take charge of their own body, I will be a happy camper.

I’ve shared this story before but if you haven’t read it, I hope you will … (28 comments)

celebrate the day: September 17 is Constitution Day! - 09/16/19 04:01 PM
September 17 is Constitution Day!

Many of us who went through the school system in the United States, at least those in my generation, can recite all or part of the Preamble to the Constitution.

We the People…

This day is about recognizing and commemorating the Constitution and the freedoms in it that were set forth by our forefathers.

Since September 11, 2001, I’ve carried with me in my travel bag these small copies of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States. They are a reminder to me of how much I love my country and am forever grateful to have been … (28 comments)

Positive Thinking Day is September 13…

This is a day I celebrate each day. It is a choice that I make. Some days are harder than others, and some situations require a lot more to keep me focused on the positive but I do.

Most of the members here tend to have a positive attitude. But we all know a handful that just can’t make that leap to being a positive person. As a good friend said I can’t get out of my own way.

Here are some ways to help take you along the road to being positive….

International Day of Charity-ActiveRain Members Know All About That

September 5 is the International Day of Charity.  The date was chosen to honor the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

You don’t have to go far to find members of our own ActiveRain community who give back to others in their own way. Some support major charitable organizations, some volunteer, and others give to individuals. All give from their hearts.

Liz and Bill Spear have for years cared for shelter dogs and cats. They devote their time, home, and financial resources to caring for these beautiful animals.

Friday Fun...College Colors Day is August 30!  You Wearing Yours?

It’s Friday so time for some fun. The first full weekend of college football is this weekend.  That means lots of tailgate parties, flags flying, people cheering, and liquid beverages and pizza!

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m watching A&M tonight (Thursday) but the season goes into full swing this weekend.

College Colors Day encourages us to wear our college’s colors. I’d be in a lot of trouble had I attended the University of Texas because orange is just not my color.

My alma mater’s (University of Houston) colors are red and white. That … (25 comments)

Banana Lovers Day is Today But It’s Every Day at ActiveRain

You may think I’ve gone bananas, right!?  You’re probably right! Bananas are everywhere...pudding, cereal, muffins, cakes, under ice cream...they’re prolific!

In a checkout line once the clerk looked at my bunch of bananas and commented that everyone who comes in buys bananas. She then pointed to the people behind me in line and they too had bananas.

You can learn more about bananas here but there’s a Banana with a lot of ‘Tude right here in ActiveRain.

National Be An Angel Day is August 22. Have You Spread Your Wings Lately?

Have you ever wished or hoped that there was an angel standing by you when you were in need of help or feeling down?
In some form or fashion, I believe that angels do exist but perhaps not how we envision them...floating in the air with outspread wings.

I think there are angels within us, or at least the ability to be angel-like.

We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing one another. Luciano De Crescenzo

Happiness Happens Month...Let’s Make It Happiness Happens Year! (Or More)

“ Happiness is a feeling of pleasure and positivity. When someone feels good, proud, relieved or satisfied about something, that person is said to be "happy".”

August 8 was Happiness Day and the whole month of August is Happiness Happens Month.

Being Happy or happiness seems like such a simple word and emotion.  We often think of children when anyone mentions the word happy.

Perhaps there’s a reason we equate happiness with children but it doesn’t have to be that way. I … (27 comments)

Tickle Me Tuesday...Guess What Day It Is?

You would be hardpressed to find a more fun and appropriate day for the dog days of summer. And yet, we celebrate two fun things on August 6...Wiggle Your Toes Day and Root Beer Float Day,

Who cares about the origins of these days?  And, you don’t have to take the point too literally. Yes, take your shoes off and wiggle your toes...yes, have a root beer float! YUM

But more to the point… take some time to access your inner child. Do something that is totally not work-related.

Go outside for lunch or afternoon break.
Don’t like root … (35 comments)

Let’s Share...It’s Share a Hug Day

Are you a hugger? I admit that hugging did not come naturally to me until I was older. There was no particular reason why except that I don’t remember my family doing an awful lot of hugging.

Now, I’m a big-time giver of hugs...real and virtual. It occurs to me that we need hugs now more than ever.

Communicating has gone from in-person to almost non-existent thanks to texts, email, and social media. The only (allowed) touching going on is our fingers on our keyboards.

Heck, I’ve found myself giving people virtual hugs on Facebook!  Not really the same thing, … (26 comments)

Cell Phone Courtesy Month...Chime In!

This one should be a no-brainer since cell phones have been the norm for years and cell phone etiquette has been discussed in posts and all over Cyberville.

So just to sum it up for those who have yet to get it (or if you’d like to copy this and hand it to an offender you know)...here are some helpful tips for cell phone courtesy.
And yet there are those little annoying habits that some cell phone users have that just don’t seem to go away.

For example…

I was perusing the internet and discovered that today is Apple Turnover Day. And, since it’s been a busy week with busy days and not as much sleep, I wasn’t sure if Apple Turnover Day meant this…

celebrate the day: Happy Fourth of July, 2019 - 07/03/19 02:11 PM
Happy Fourth of July, 2019!

For many of us, we were born into our wonderful country, freedom and independence are what we’ve grown up knowing. And for that privilege, we have our Founding Fathers (and Mothers) to thank.

So on this July 4, while we take time off from work and head to the beach or prepare for a backyard barbecue,  don’t forget to give thanks to George (Washington), Alexander (Hamilton), Benjamin (Franklin), John(Adams), Samuel (Adams), Thomas (Jefferson), James (Madison), John (Jay), and many others.

Happy Birthday, America…
Happy July 4th!

Pick Up a Rod & Reel...It’s Go Fishing Day...

No, I haven’t gone totally daffy (yet.)  Larry and I have been talking about children and how buried their heads are in their devices. And the discussion turned to fishing and how we wish more children had the opportunity to learn to fish.

I love to fish. Not crazy about removing the fish from the hook but that’s why I have Larry around, as well as gloves and a hook remover.  With the exception of certain fish, we are "catch & release" fisherpeople.

We tried once to take our grandsons fishing once and … (29 comments)

National Flip Flop Day is June 14...Celebrate for a Good Cause

You don’t have to be a lover of flip flops (as I am) to participate in celebrating this day!
Tropical Smoothie Cafe is offering a 16oz Sunshine SmoothieⓇ when you come in between 2PM-7 PM wearing your flip flops on June 14 to help celebrate National Flip Flop Day.

Besides serving nutritious and fun foods, including vegan and gluten-free, they have, as their name suggests, fun smoothies from mocha madness to mango magic.

And, if you want to get a little healthier they have superfood smoothies such as avocolada, orange ginger … (19 comments)

Doughnuts and Chocolate Ice Cream...Yum!

Barbara Todaro...Do not read this!  Today, June 7 is National Doughnut Day AND National Chocolate Ice Cream Day.  Outside of chicken fried steak, these are two of my favorite things to eat.

Before I get a lecture on how bad sugar is for you...I get it. But in my life, if I can’t have one doughnut or a scoop of chocolate ice cream on occasion, then I’m not sure what kind of life that would be.

What many may know of D-Day is through having seen Saving Private Ryan, which is an excellent film. Boomers, like myself, had parents and uncles who served in World War II. However, many who returned chose not to talk about what they had experienced.

I knew only that my father was a photographer on an airplane that day. His birthday happens to be June 6 and he told me that he had joked with his CO that he should get the day off.

Honoring Those Who Sacrificed for Us

As others have pointed out, this day... this whole weekend, is not just for BBQs and pool parties or appliance sales and a three-day weekend.

This is a weekend set aside to remember and honor those men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Red Nose Day is May 23, 2019...Let’s See Yours!

This weekend we’ll be gathering to celebrate a family member’s high school graduation. There will be lots of food (Texas BBQ) and a strong showing of family support.

Most reading this will be celebrating Memorial Day Weekend with some similar kind of gathering. Unfortunately, there are children in our great country who don’t know where their next meal will come from or where they will be sleeping each night. They may not have the luxury of quality healthcare that our children have.

Motivational Monday...Give for Global World Wish Day

April 29 is Global World Wish Day and your opportunity to help grant the wishes of sick children. This day marks the anniversary of the beginning of the Make a Wish Foundation.

We are all aware of this wonderful charitable organization and I hope that you’ll continue to support them in any way that you can.  However, I’d like to tell you again about another charitable organization that plays an intricate role in helping facilitate many of these wishes.
