Wordless Wednesday...School Days

It’s a new school year and certainly one with a unique set of challenges.  Yesterday my mini-me started Kindergarten...her first real school. Her older brothers started their classes too as well as their mother who is a teacher.

I got to speak briefly with JK...or should I say I listened! When I spoke to her while she was on her way home in the car, she spoke nonstop!!! She was so excited!!

I hope that everyone’s first day of school, in the classroom or learning from home, will be the first of many days of learning.

You’re off to great places. Today … (33 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...Only in Texas

My neighbor across the street shares the same love of whimsy as I do. He shared with us his recent purchase.

What do you think?  He is on the golf course so he hopes it entertains the golfers too.

Wordless Wednesday...What Bill Taught Me!

Yesterday (Tuesday) at our weekly ZOOM meeting Liz and Bill Spear showed us how to add a Google Map to our posts. If you’ve seen Bill’s posts at all you know that he uses maps a lot.

Here’s my first attempt. It wasn’t hard but I have more fiddling to do with it. I want to try to add a photo and the path but I'm not quite there yet.

I used to use maps when I wrote local posts about Delray Beach and I wish I had called Bill then because his way is a lot easier.

Wordless Wednesday...Before and After

There are some Before and Afters that Mother Nature gives us that surpass anything even the best Home Stager could offer.

(these were on our gate when we came home from our walk! How lucky is that!)

I can remember standing by a tall tree in the front yard of my piano teacher’s as I waited for my mother to pick me up from my lesson.  At certain times of the year, there would be these empty "shells" hanging on the tree. Even then I was fascinated by them...so much so I had dozens of these empty vessels stashed away … (20 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...Making the Most of the Time You Have

For weeks now I’ve been trying to snap a video or photo of one of the butterflies we see on our morning walks.

Seeing butterflies always fills me with mixed emotions… joy just seeing one, and sadness for their very short lives.
And even though their lives are short, look at how much joy they bring to our world.

The butterfly counts not months but moments and has time enough.

Wordful Wednesday… Plan for Next Week!

While I’ve lost count of just how many ZOOM meetings we’ve had, I can tell you that each one has been worth the hour I’ve invested.

Yesterday (Tuesday) Eileen Burns  shared her knowledge of Probate as it concerns real estate properties (and also provided food for thought for our own personal holdings.)

Hope you’ll join us next week...Tuesday, at 2 PM E.S.T. for an open discussion I think you’ll enjoy.  ZOOM MEETING

Wordless Wednesday...Keep Up!

The Preserve where we walk had some recent visitors that showed up one day where the trail starts.

I watched as they moved from one prime feeding area to another. They didn’t stay long in any one area though. They moved around from spot to spot.  But there was always this one fellow who could never quite catch up.

Remind you of anyone you know?

How many agents or professionals have you met who, for example, don’t know how to do a  Zoom call and don’t even want to try?

Wordless Wednesday...What Toilet Paper Shortage?

My niece has been home with three active children (12,10, and 5) and sent this photo to me.

Staying at home has been hard for all of us but I’d imagine that it’s especially hard for parents who must try to help their children with their schooling and keep them from getting too bored and doing serious harm to their siblings.

Wordless Wednesday...Like a Top Gun Flyby

Are you tired of reading about the bluebirds yet??? The babies in our bluebird box here should be ready to leave by the end of the week.

In the meantime, chicks from two (we think) previous broods from this year have been helping mom and dad feed the little babies. We’ve seen them take worms into the box. It’s so sweet.

Normally, the bluebirds don’t mind if Larry goes out to do a quick check on the box. It’s actually recommended.

However, this past week, every time Larry or I would get near the bluebird box or even the … (22 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...Where’s The Rest of the House?

On one of our walks, Larry and I saw this structure. My first thought was...where’s the rest of the house?

This is a Chimney Swift Tower that is built to offer nesting structures or a resting place for chimney swifts who spend March through October in the eastern United States including Houston. They then migrate and winter in South America.

I had never heard of a chimney swift until we saw them whizzing through the air.

You can read more about chimney swifts here but in a nutshell…

Wordless Wednesday...Chillin’ Out

If you ever need to get a fresh perspective on life...my suggestion...get out and view what Mother Nature has to offer.

We’ve had temps in the 90s this week so everyone felt like chillin’ out...even this little guy.

We enjoy all of the birds and squirrels in our back yard. We can hear the bluebird babies saying “feed me” in “bluebirdese” when their mom and dad approach the box with their daily choice of worms.

We watch as the bluebird parents dive bomb the squirrels who are minding their own business. And minutes later baby squirrels are out running around and playing … (30 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...Life and Nature Goes On

We’re all so tired of the same old topic of discussion.  You know what that is. The month of May will be coming to an end soon and where has the time gone?

Well...it’s still moving on...Life...Mother Nature...Flowers are Blooming, babies being born.

Wordless Wednesday...Chanel? Calvin Klein? Or Betsey Johnson!

Many of us had Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, clay, and trucks that you actually had to push when we grew up.  Today’s children have electronic cars that can be remotely operated and devices that are almost always on.

The other day my niece sent me these photos of what mini-me has been doing while everyone is staying at home.  She had taken ribbons she found and remade many of Barbie’s dresses.

While I love today’s technology, it is a hope of mine that creativity and imagination will not be lost in our youth today.

Let’s encourage our children … (34 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...In Answer to Your Question Paul S. Henderson

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS  asked this question yesterday in ActiveRain’s Q&A section…

“Did you ever think you would have to wear a mask or a bandanna when you go into a 7-Eleven?”

(See the arrow?...my retired policeman brother joked that the lady in the doorway is the owner and had a gun behind her back! LOL)

The other day I went to a liquor store for some dark beer for Larry’s beer bread.  I grabbed my mask just to play it safe.

Earlier in the day, I’d shared my masked “me” with friends in Kansas … (31 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...A Quick House Flip

Our tenants left one of our houses in late March.  We didn’t have much notice but had a general idea when they would be leaving.

I wouldn’t even call how they left it “broom clean.” They left everything behind and poor Larry had to use a mask and gloves to clean it. Sadly, there was one egg that did not hatch.

We needed a quick turnaround because we were hoping to have new tenants quickly. Larry cleaned and scrubbed and the house was ready for new tenants by April 5th.

And today, April 14th, the first of our new tenants … (35 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...Construction On Hold

Larry and I did a very early morning walk yesterday in an effort to avoid any crowds. We also decided to go a little bit off our usual path (the paved path) and venture into a more wooded area.

We came upon some construction by the Eagle Scouts that has been put on hold.

I can’t wait to see what the Nature Playscape will be when they’re allowed to complete their project. The Eagle Scouts were the ones who erected the bluebird boxes that Larry and I have been monitoring as well as the benches we see along the paths.

Wordless Wednesday...Going, Going, Gone

It was bound to happen...the way of nature.  The eggs* in one of our bluebird boxes out at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve have hatched and they fledged this week.

We’re thankful that even though we are in a Stay-at-Home Directive, we still have access to our parks, so we were able to check on the boxes.

After the eggs hatch, mom and dad continue to feed them until they are ready to spread their wings and fly. And when they fledge, mom and dad are still with them.

But, don’t worry. They don’t just kick them out of the nests. Mom and dad … (35 comments)

Wordless Wednesday...Keep Walking

We were out checking on the birds yesterday and saw this…

It makes sense, though. The coronavirus can remain on surfaces for days.

This was a signal of things to come because today, as was expected, Harris County, which includes Houston will go into Stay At Home mode.

Thankfully, parks will remain open. The playground sets and basketball courts will stay closed.

Wordless Wednesday...Bringing a Smile to Your Face

While officially Spring doesn’t arrive until March 20, we’re close enough.

Larry and I are doing our best to stay in but we still take our morning walks in the Nature Preserve where I maintain a healthy social distance...especially from snakes who are beginning to slither around now that it is warmer.

I thought you might like to see what has been going on in one of our bluebird boxes, endearingly known as Box #1.

We are so grateful to have the opportunity to observe this wonder of nature.

Wordless Wednesday...Eggs-actly

Larry and I are so excited!  Months ago, Larry rehabbed 5 of the bluebird boxes out at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve where we typically walk. This was all done with the permission and blessing of the Park’s events administer.

We have been checking on them as part of a Nest Watch program.  The bluebirds almost immediately began checking out the boxes and then slowly we could see both the male and female bird bringing nesting material to the boxes!

And look at what the boxes have!!!  Three of the 5 boxes and one in our backyard have eggs. And one other nest has nesting … (35 comments)
