Wordless Wednesday…Location, Location, Location

A phrase that is often heard when talking about home buying is…
Location, location, location!

Choose your home wisely because there are some things that can be updated, changed, or fixed in your new home but location is not one of them.

Just ask this cicada!

We saw this cicada emerging from its nymph exoskeleton as we were leaving my brother’s home. They’re fascinating to watch. This one, however, might have chosen a better location for its temporary home.  The car was blocking the other cars so we had to move it.

I have always been fascinated with these creatures. When we … (18 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Selfie Day!

Today, June 21, is National Selfie Day! I know that there are some who do not like to take selfies…and that’s ok.

When I was in FL, my good friend and I were the only ones who took photos of the “family” dinners. Consequently, we were rarely in the photos. We decided to take a selfie together at the dinner so we’d have a record of our being there!
Believe it or not, the first selfie was taken in 1839 by Robert Cornelius!  Of course, smartphones with cameras weren’t around then but he did manage to take a selfie!  BTW- it … (23 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…Mini-Me Loves Her Uncle Larry

Mini-me loves her Uncle Larry, especially when they get to bake together!

During our Zoom Meeting yesterday, Mini-Me and Larry had fun baking biscuits for her dog. The recipe calls for flour, chicken stock, applesauce, and an egg.

Later, we took a quick trip to Kickerillo to check on one of the bluebird boxes,

We are blessed to have young people in our lives, especially my Mini-Me!!!

Wordless Wednesday…Who the Heck Are You?

Many of you may know that Larry and I monitor several bluebird boxes at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and our own home.

Here are the 5 beautiful bluebird eggs as of May 22.

Bluebird eggs take 16 to 20 days to hatch so we checked on the box on June 4. What doesn't belong in this picture??

We think it is a brown-headed cowbird egg. Long story short…mama Cowbird lays an egg in any available nest and then leaves to follow her food source. She does not return. The host mama bird incubates and feeds it. (See, it happens in the … (22 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…A Lite Remodel

Larry did a lite remodel on one of our bluebird boxes out at Kickerillo.

BACKSTORY
Last month, we had 5 adorable bluebird chicks in the box. And just like that they disappeared overnight.

There were no feathers or indications of any kind of struggle around the box. We are guessing that a snake took them all.

Since the mating season is winding down, we decided to leave the nest there to make it easier for mama bluebird to start another brood.

Before we could blink, she’d laid 5 beautiful blue eggs in the box.

THE REMODEL
Unlike our bluebird box at home, the … (19 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…So Quickly

It wasn’t that long ago that I was rolling down a small hill with our grandson, Hugo. And it seems like a few years ago that Larry and I had lunch with him in the cafeteria of his elementary school.
BLINK…and Hugo is graduating from high school and will become a Jayhawk (University of Kansas) in the fall. We are so excited for him…he is smart, kind, and very goal oriented!

Congratulations, Hugo!  Soar high!!!

My sister-in-law’s niece graduated from the University of Texas last weekend. We are so proud of her. Logan is already working in Austin doing what she set out to do.

Wordless Wednesday…For the Birds

Today, April 26, is Audubon Day so we are celebrating the birds!!! The day celebrates the birthday of John James Audubon!

The birds in our backyard must know that we are celebrating this because we have had a very busy flight pattern over our bird feeders this week.

The Orioles have been enjoying our buffet of cut oranges and grape jelly.

We saw a Rose-breasted Grosbeak for the first time at our feeder. We also have our hummingbirds, blue jays, bluebirds, mockingbirds, Chickadees, and other assorted feathered friends.

Wordless Wednesday…Modern Hitchin’ Post?

On a recent morning walk at The Boardwalk at Towne Lake, Larry and I came across these….

We had an idea what they were but since we’re in Texas, I thought perhaps they might be the modern version of a Hitchin’ Post!!!

Wordless Wednesday…They Have Arrived

Larry and I love this time of year because we become volunteer caretakers of the birds near us.

We’ve had 3 bluebirds fledge into their new world just last week.

This weekend we had the Carolina Chickadee babies hatch (they became our new tenants in the former Bluebird  house in our backyard)

And yesterday, 4 Bluebird chicks hatched at Kickerillo Misher. (we keep hoping that the 5th egg will hatch)

Sadly, the 3 cardinal eggs that were in a nest outside my office window disappeared when we checked on them Sunday. Because there was no damage to the nest and we couldn’t … (24 comments)

If you follow the brackets for March Madness then you know that there have been some upsets. There have been some wins, though…Texas’ win over Penn State, right Dorie Dillard Austin TX

Larry and I had two #1 seeds at the beginning of the tournament so out of fairness, we had KU (Kansas University) and UH (the University of Houston) garden flags.
Sadly, someone lost in the second round.

(I have to confess…I couldn’t bring myself to remove the KU flag. It’s hard to see a grown man cry. LOL)

Wordless Wednesday…Wanna Drag?

A few years ago, there were several geese who came for a visit at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve. They were loud.

It is my understanding that they were later caught and given to a local lady who agreed to give them a new home on her land outside the city.

One day they were all gone, except one. He remained. I’d read that geese mate for life so I wondered if something had happened to Mrs. Goose.

He has become a fixture at Kickerillo…often greeting walkers as they pass the public restrooms. When we arrive and wonder if he is still around, all … (16 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…House Sitters

There are some house sitters at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and they are making their presence known.

These Egyptian Geese are doing what many other birds and animals do in the Spring…at least that’s why I think they’re here.

These like hanging out on top of the public restroom, the signs, rooftops, or on the docks.

They do make their presence known with loud honks and noises that I’m sure Donald Duck never made.

In fact, they’re so loud, I haven’t heard our Black Bellied Whistling Ducks or the lone goose we have in weeks. However, they don't seem to be as messy (if … (21 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…A Perfect Ending

Valentine’s Day began with cloudy skies and drizzle.  As the day passed, the sun said Happy Valentine’s Day to us and gifted us with temperatures in the high 70s.

What better way to end the day than beautiful clouds at sunset?

Wordless Wednesday…They’re Back!

On Valentine’s Day, 2021, we had snow, several days of freezing weather, and widespread power outages throughout the area.

We also had 5 bluebird eggs in our bird box that were still in the incubation stage. Despite Larry’s efforts to keep the temperatures up in the box (he went out every 4 hours and placed hand warmers under the nest), none of the eggs hatched.

Fast forward to this week and…nesting season has begun!!!

If you look closely the next time you’re out, you’ll see that many of the birds have donned their special dating attire!  The red on the male cardinal … (20 comments)

Wordless Wednesday…An Unexpected Delight

Larry and I love our walks. Besides being a great way to get some exercise in and to have daily social interaction, it’s also fun exploring the animal life around us.

We’ve seen snakes, birds, armadillos, rabbits, raccoons, and coyotes but never a bear!

Wordless Wednesday…Synchronized Swimming (quack quack)

We’ve been walking at Meyer Park on Sundays for a change of pace and if we time it right we’ll hear the church carillon.  During the holidays we were treated to Christmas carols.

This past Sunday we stopped by a small pond near the path and caught this act…
