local attraction: Rock Eagle and Rock Hawk- worth a drive from anywhere in Georgia - 01/11/18 08:34 PM
The oldest Mound in the state of Georgia that I know about is Rock Eagle.  There is actually two rock bird mounds in the state and guess what?  Both of them are located right here in Putnam County.
Rock Eagle has a wonderful 4-H camp and retreat area build around it.  There are trails, lakes, camping, cabins, a water park, putt-putt golf, and so much more. The park area is 1500 acres and it's really a nice place to visit.
The rock mounds are between 1000 and 3000 years old.  Many of the rocks are thought to have been drug into place because they … (4 comments)

local attraction: Visit Lockerly Arboretum in Milledgeville, GA - 01/29/15 09:58 AM
Lockerly Arboretum makes a wonderful day trip to visit in Milledgeville, Georgia.  It's just south of town and Rose Hill ( built in 1839) is a beautiful mansion filled with period furnishings. There are trails, picnic tables near the pond to bring a picnic and plenty of trails to enjoy a walk.
They have a mission statement:
To provide outstanding ecological, horticultural and historical education in order to promote preservation and stewardship of the environment, by fostering an understanding of and an appreciation for the natural world.
I can get behind that statement.  They offer school field trip opportunties, a wonderful wedding … (14 comments)

local attraction: Former State Capitol Building and Museum in Milledgeville, Georgia - 01/27/15 11:52 AM
Yesterday I posted about the former Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville,  today I'd like to share a little about the actual old Capitol Building. It's current on the campus of Georgia Military College, but also houses a wonderful museum.

local attraction: Visit the Uncle Remus Museum to find out about the "Briarpatch" - 01/11/15 06:19 AM
I recently wrote a post about an upcoming evening event called "Christmas in the Briarpatch" and someone commented on the name so I thought I would explain why Eatonton is called the Briarpatch.
It's an "Uncle Remus" reference.  We have lots of them in town because the author of the "Uncle Remus Tales", Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton. We have Briarpatch Office Products in town, The Farmers and Merchants ATM cards have long been called Tar Baby cards, Uncle Remus library, Uncle Remus Museum, and the Uncle Remus Golf Course just to name a few.
There is a little more … (14 comments)
