localism: A challenge to offer some help to some great folks in our community
- 07/29/16 08:23 AM
Today I was checking on line for updates to the current Milledgeville water situation. For the most part when I post a comment on Facebook I get 5 or 10 "likes", but a couple of days ago I posted an offer to give drinking water to anyone who came to my office to get it with containers. I only had a couple of people take me up on the offer. It's not only upsetting to not have drinking water, but people need to wash dishes and clothes and it caused some other issues that you might not even consider. I had someone (22 comments)
localism: Why is Eatonton Georgia called the "Briarpatch"?
- 11/20/14 04:54 AM
I recently wrote a post about an upcoming evening event called "Christmas in the Briarpatch" and someone commented on the name so I thought I would explain why Eatonton is called the Briarpatch. It's an "Uncle Remus" reference. We have lots of them in town because the author of the "Uncle Remus Tales", Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton. We have Briarpatch Office Products in town, The Farmers and Merchants ATM cards have long been called Tar Baby cards, Uncle Remus library, Uncle Remus Museum, and the Uncle Remus Golf Course just to name a few. There is a little (5 comments)
localism: Not a typical old car at the show, but Donald loved it
- 10/19/14 01:56 PM
Donald and I wandered around the old car show at the Deep Roots festival yesterday. I saw an old chevy like my parents used to have, a 67 Camero like my friend David ... that was riding it when it caught on fire and yeah, it was toast. Donald, he saw this former Military Police Hummer that is now GA state Patrol. He was smitten. They go way back! If you missed the Deep Roots Festival, you missed a great time. Hope to see you there next year.

localism: Be careful when driving around Lake Sinclair, let me show you why
- 06/27/14 07:55 AM
Not only is it summer and you can expect to find children walking in or along the side of the road or perhaps even playing a game of basketball or skateboarding in the cul-de-sac, but we have lots of wild life and you should drive carefully and slow in neighborhoods around the lake. This morning I saw a doe crossing the road and of course I braked for her. She passed and then out of the yard on my left came the little darling spotted fawn trailing behind her. But wait, there was a second fawn. It was just standing there (12 comments)
localism: Downtown Eatonton Georgia, a wonderful place to live
- 05/03/14 01:24 PM
Downtown Eatonton Georgia- Close to everything, Next to perfect!I went traveling around the streets of downtown Eatonton Georgia yesterday looking at the homes for sale and recalling such happy childhood memories of the years that I lived downtown. I lived on Sunnydale Drive right across the street from a store. Lots of other children lived in my neighborhood. In second grade I was the "infector" who gave all the other kids in the neighborhood chicken pox. One of my favorite things about living there was waiting at the bus stop in the mornings for the school bus. I'd always take a bit (5 comments)

localism: Power on, power off, power on, power off... sigh
- 02/13/14 11:27 PM
40 hours without power at my house. Right now it's on. The problem is we aren't turning on the furnace because it keeps blinking off again and those surges are really bad for the furnance. We stil have the fireplace going and right now it's only 60 in my greatroom. Hopefully soon I can take a hot shower and warm up. I still don't have power at my office. And in this no power ice storm one of my agents has managed to work out a contract for a property she showed last weekedn. Need to get to the office (20 comments)
localism: Baldwin County water under conserve and Boil, Putnam County under conserve
- 01/09/14 05:34 AM
The frigid temperatures this week have caused problems with broken mains and water production and safety in both Baldwin and Putnam counties. BALDWIN COUNTY : RECOMMENDS CONSERVING AND BOILING FOR AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. Personally I would be using bought water for cooking and drinking in Baldwin County. They release the following notice: Baldwin County Boil Water NoticeDue to the extreme weather conditions, excessive usage and water pipe breaks have caused service interruption within several areas of Baldwin County. This is causing water pressure in parts of the water system to drop to dangerously low levels. When this occurs a potential health (9 comments)

localism: Sea of Flowers in Chula Vista, CA did a wonderful job today
- 12/20/13 01:50 PM
Well the first two places we called today couldn't get us the flowers we wanted to send, even by Monday. So we finally found a great place. My mother in law loves purple and we wanted purple snapdragons in our flowers we were having delievered to her tomorrow. A few hours after we had placed the order the lady from the florist called back and let me know they had a really busy day with a wedding tomorrow and asked if I minded if they delivered them this evening after they closed. She said it would be around 6:30 PST (9 comments)
localism: Susan Lindsley book signing and visit to the The Red Door
- 11/24/12 03:50 AM
Sometimes things are more important than work. And one of those things for me is a good book. And books make lovely gifts too. So this morning I set out to go to a book signing to pick up a few gifts. And it happened to be at the perfect place for an author who made Yesterplace a word. You've got to read how that came about on Susan Lindsley's website. The signing was at The Red Door. One of my favorite antique places ever, located on South Wayne street in historic Downtown Milledgeville. I love The Red Door. You can (16 comments)
