blogging: Here is what happens when you do a hatchet job! - 04/22/08 05:52 AM
And it isn't pretty...
While rolling through Twitter this morning, I came across a Twit by Jay Thompson.  He is a guy I like and respect, and he was busy being VERY pissed off, so I followed it back to see what the hubbub was about...
Enter the Redfin blog and Carol Hian.  She had decided to do a whiny hatchet job on Kris Berg and her canned food drive... ostensibly because of Kris mentioning that Redfin was moving away from its original business model towards one that is more conventional.
I don't think she really had a clue as … (6 comments)

blogging: Qassia, worth a try. - 04/13/08 02:35 AM
Qassia is a backlink generating website.  Adam Waldman had sent an invitation to me a couple of weeks ago... I just finally got around to checking it out.
The basic deal is that we write small posts (called intels) and for each one we get a backlink.  The backlinks are not reciprocated, so they actually have a higher SEO value than reciprocated backlinks.  There are also the benefits of belonging to yet another social network.
It is free to sign up and participate, and the site is still in beta, so apparently one needs an invitation to join up.  Here is … (13 comments)

blogging: I give up... - 04/01/08 02:28 AM
That's right.
The tide is overwhelming.  I have to give in to the peer pressure.  Why should I try so hard to be different?
Everyone says that I need to have my picture there instead of an impersonal logo.  That is what everyone else does to be memorable.  The average agent sets themselves apart by having their picture on all of their marketing materials. Everyone says that I need to work a geographical area, not some sort of lifestyle or affinity group.  After all, that is what works, right?  Except for a couple of agents that specialize in golf, equestrian, senior … (24 comments)

blogging: Do you Twitter? - 03/31/08 04:13 AM
Are you a Twittering consumer?
I'd love to hear from you.
I have recently re-introduced myself to Twitter.  I had jumped on last year, but quickly grew bored.  I wasn't really familiar and didn't have much of a handle on it.  But, through the support of other agents and real estate professionals on Active Rain, I have stepped back into the fray.
At this time, my Twitter ID is LaneBailey... or @LaneBailey... you should be able to find me either way.  I might also make an alter ID that would just be for news and other real estate news.  … (11 comments)

blogging: Twitter update... - 03/31/08 04:01 AM
Ok, I need to update on how Twitter is going.
I have it open on another tab at the moment.  And the experience this time is VERY different from the last time.  Last time I had no followers, and I was following no one.  There are a few reasons for that.  To start with, I wasn't as connected with the high tech agent community.  Another reason was that I just did it, and didn't offer up much of a chance for people to find me.  And I wasn't effectively looking for others.  So... it was SERIOUSLY boring.
As I write this, … (11 comments)

blogging: I'll Twitter already... Uncle, uncle - 03/29/08 03:42 AM
I keep hearing I need to do this.
REtechSouth... Loads of speakers said that I HAD to be on Twitter. Missy Caulk... posted up again yesterday about all of the people she is connected with on Twitter. Jessica Horton... just sent me an invitation... even though I was already there, but I was using a cryptic email.  Jim Richards... who has nothing to do with A/R or real estate started following me.  He is a friend that relocated to TX. Brian Brady...  using Twitter quite effectively.  Seth Godin... he's doing it too. So, since all of the luminaries are saying that … (12 comments)

blogging: More ways to publicize your blog... - 03/22/08 02:58 PM

↑ Grab this Headline Animator

↑ Grab this Headline Animator
I've been using FeedBurner for a few weeks, and one of the handy dandy tools they have are these groovy headline animators.
So, I added them to my email signature... and I have something similar on both blogs, here and LaneBailey.com as well as my website, GarageHomesUSA.com.
In addition to RSS feeds and widgets (like the one on the right sidebar), these are a great way to let people know what you are writing about.  I even dropped them into a couple of forums to which I post (Jeep, … (26 comments)

blogging: Blog like nobody is watching you - 03/19/08 04:23 AM
Seriously.
Rich Jacobson, the A/R Community Builder, had a post this morning reminding people that as they post here... they are under the ever watchful eye of consumers.  And there is no doubt that he is absolutely right.  After making my comment, I went back to review comments.  There was a comment that I saw that popped off a light bulb in my head.  Someone said that they post and comment while keeping in mind that the public is watching.
On the face, that seems like very good advice.  In fact, I would say that it would behoove most people to … (22 comments)

blogging: This is RICH!!! - 03/13/08 05:01 PM
OMG, I can barely contain myself.  Seriously.
I have about 30 blogs I keep up with every day... most every day.  And, if you didn't figure out from this post, one of them is the President's Report from the NAR.
So, this evening I was reviewing my reading and up popped this post.  Could it be that enough of YOU here on little ol' A/R shook up the NAR leadership?
We understand that blogs are designed to be both informative and interactive. When we put thoughts here, we want to inspire discussion and comments from you.

blogging: I am very sad to say... - 03/10/08 09:54 AM
Not shocked... but sad.
Actually, I'm not shocked at all.  And maybe sad isn't the right word... disgusted would be better...
And I really hope the right people find this post...
A few days ago, I posted a comment on the President's Report blog at the NAR.  The NAR has found this whole social media/blogging thing, and they want to show that they "get it" and are hip to the grooviness.  But they don't, and they aren't.
Dick Gaylord, President of the NAR posted about an email he received that supportive of the NAR and their "rosey" outlook during this … (106 comments)

blogging: I am a Blogamist... - 02/18/08 01:57 AM
I have another blog.  Over there I coined a term.
blogamy
But, yep.  I've been keeping another blog and hiding it.  The letters on my lapel, the late nights when you hear typing in the other room...  Always having to find more ideas.  It is from 17 posts a week (some are for members only, and don't show up on a casual search).  At least since my New Year's Resolution to give each blog original material.
So, while this one is a little more real estate focused, the other one is a little more fun.  I have been posting the … (12 comments)

blogging: A new tool in the "keeping up with other bloggers" toolbox - 01/10/08 02:03 AM
Mike Mueller wrote a great post about using Google Reader to streamline time spent reading other blogger's posts each day.  I have been using Google Reader for a few weeks, and think it is a great tool.  But, I just stumbled upon something else yesterday.
Well, in my daily blog reading I came across another free solution... NewsGator's FeedDemon.  Apparently it was a paid program to aggregate blog content into a reader, but they have just made it free.  Actually, they have made several different consumer products free.  They also include a mobile version of a their feed reader, as well … (2 comments)

blogging: Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Opera - 01/04/08 02:32 PM
And I'm sure there are more, but these are the four at the top of the list... in order.
Internet Explorer (IE7 is the current, but there are a lot of people still running IE6) Firefox (Made by Mozilla, Ver. 2 is the current) Safari (Made by Apple, but available for XP and Vista, Ver. 3 is current) Opera (Ver. 9.25 is current) These are mostly good products, although I have to begin by saying I'm not a fan of Internet Explorer.  However, IE7 isn't too bad, and has finally entered the same realm as the others.
Let me start with … (16 comments)

blogging: Have you made your comments? - 12/20/07 07:50 AM
Today, I passed a milestone of which I'm pretty proud. Yesterday, I made my 250th post... but there is something else that is more important in my blogging world here on A/R... and I have never seen this number mentioned... so, I will mention it.
2000
I have made over 2000 comments. Frankly, I haven't noticed whether this counts the comments I've made on my own blog, answering those that have blessed me with a comment, but I try to combine and minimize those. And, frankly, I'm not one of those bloggers here that gets 84 comments every time I post, so … (18 comments)

blogging: I just can't hold back any longer - 12/13/07 03:07 PM
There are three things in music of which I'm not a big fan.
ReggaeElvisLed ZeppelinNow, I'm not against any of them. Just, none of them hit my top 287 list. But, when one takes a little of each, and blends them together, there is magic. I wish I'd had my thinking cap on when I went out to Vegas for the NAR Convention. Viva Las Vegas...

Don't worry, I'm going to kick in another amazing video tomorrow.
Now, because this is a real estate blog... oh forget it, I can't even come up with an excuse. I'll have a better … (10 comments)

blogging: Blog anthology, Posts 138 - 150 - 12/13/07 08:39 AM
Once again, I have a little discrepancy in the numbers. This time, it’s because of the platform change and now there are actually numbers next to the list on the back end… I must have mis-counted previously. Hopefully that jazz is behind me.
The next post in the series was about one of the biggest football games of the year in south Gwinnett County. Football Night in America… ok, Lilburn, GA chronicled the experience of the Parkview v. Brookwood game. All of us had a great time, including the future student.
For a Saturday post, I decided to answer the question … (0 comments)

blogging: Post Parking... or where do you get all of your material? - 12/10/07 02:21 AM
I have two blogs and a dynamic (meaning not static) website.  All of these platforms thrive on fresh material on a timely basis.  In a couple of these cases, the timely basis means I have to put up a new post each day.  In another, I limit myself to around 10 posts a week (guess which one that is).  On the other, I just want to make sure that I have new content every few days.
So, I have to write ten posts a week for Active Rain.  Some of those will be posts that can go to LaneBailey.com and … (4 comments)

blogging: I know... it's officially a rut! - 12/05/07 12:51 PM
This is yet another technology post... and there are so many other things I want to blog about... but I just can't move past this until I get it out.  I'll include a bonus for those few of you that stick it our for a few minutes.
It all starts out in
Another in the never ending series of posts about building a website... Part ZCXII And then I carried it a little further with
Just when you think you got it licked... Well...  I am a couple of steps further.

blogging: Just when you think you got it licked... - 12/04/07 06:23 AM
(I thought about naming this Adventures in Web Management Part 715)
So, last week I found a GREAT theme for my Joomla site, www.GarageHomesUSA.com. It is really cool out of the box, and it has a lot of room for mods that I wanted to do anyway. So, I figure...
I got it beat!
But then there was a little compatibility issue... I have been running version 1.5RC2. The new theme was written for RC3. I upgraded, and then I was sure...
I got it beat!
And then I notice (thank you Marchel and others) that the actual articles aren't showing … (0 comments)

blogging: Free Milk. Get your Free Milk!! - 11/28/07 01:54 AM
I had an interesting conversation.  it was interesting for many and varied reasons.
There were three people gathered in place that were familiar with my blog... and I was only one of them. Only one of them was familiar with Active Rain... me again. One of them was an honest to goodness consumer.  Nobody got punched... the Realtysaurus only pushed me a couple of times... ok, she didn't, but she wanted to. The path of the conversation was VERY interesting. So, let me elaborate.
Consumer:  "You look familiar to me."
Lane:  "I'm a REALTOR(R)."
C:  "I think I've read your blog." … (11 comments)
