garages: What makes a Garage "Inspirational"? - 06/11/09 05:30 PM
Image by genevievepan via Flickr There are basically three kinds of garages...
Places to store stuff Places to work on stuff Places to display stuff Most garages are storage sheds. They hold tools, lawn mowers, cars, sporting goods, cleaning supplies and overflow food in the chest freezer.
The next most common group are working garages. Whether it is building a hot rod or keeping the family rides in tune, they have tools and parts and more tools.
Finally, there are the showplaces. These are less garage and more gallery of mobile art. And some of them are incredible. They are limited … (26 comments)

garages: OK, this is even a little extreme for me... - 06/11/09 05:17 PM
I was just thinking about a recent call...
I had someone looking for their ultimate "Garage Home."  For him, this was a 3000 square foot shop with a camper inside.  He was wondering if I knew of any available in North Georgia.  I didn't...
But this does go to show the variety.
On one extreme we have amazing (and expensive) GaragMa Hals.  On the other we have a big shop with a camper in the middle of it...  Honestly, it wouldn't be that bad.  I've spent the last couple of days prepping a borrowed pop-up for a camping trip.  It would … (0 comments)

garages: New listing coming later in the week... - 04/23/09 08:47 AM
I am in the process of building the website for the property... I don't have the final address, so I am not going to publish it until later in the week... and thought I would give you a sneak preview.
Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.
This is a really cool property.  It has two 2 car garages, one attached and one detached.  It has 4 bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms as well as a full finished basement.
The real star of the show is the setting.  It sits on 3 acres, and has a long meandering driveway leading up to the house.  It … (0 comments)

garages: If you have cool tools... you need a cool box! - 03/26/09 08:56 AM
Wandering through Lowe's I ran across their flagship Kobalt Tool Box. It has been out for a little while, but the local store hadn't been displaying it... and it is kind of cool.
I had two thoughts:
Ok, this is cool. This is a bit gimmicky. Basically, this is a 53" cabinet chest combo with a few added items. The added items are a fridge and a stereo (with iPod connectivity). No doubt, this is a big box. Aside from being 53" wide and 24" deep, it is also almost 70" tall. The fridge isn't that big, 1.6 cubic feet, but … (8 comments)

garages: Freebie of the week... - 02/09/09 05:34 AM
I have been kicking this around for a little while, and have even extended the offer to a few people... but no takers yet.
Here is the skinny:

I am finishing up a major overhaul of GarageHomesUSA.com.  It is my real estate website that focuses on homes with really cool garages, garage toys and trends in auto enthusiast garages.  As I go through the site, the one thing it is missing is more garages.  So...
I am willing to FREELY PROMOTE your listing if it has a cool garage!
I would love to have more Atlanta area listings on the … (13 comments)

garages: 101 Cars I must drive... - 10/22/08 04:58 AM
I wrote about the series a few months ab=go.  I think it is a great idea, but I am not all that fond of some of the cars that were selected.  On the conversation thread, it was suggested that I work up a better list... so I am.
I just started it this week.
Part I
Part II
Part III
But there are a few things...  First, I don't know where this is going.  I don't have a list of cars that is already written.  I am winging it.  So, that means I am happy to take some input.  Secondly, I … (3 comments)

garages: Incrementalism - 06/14/08 02:40 AM
Incrementalism is a concept that a lot of people in the automotive hobby are familiar with... in theory, if not the word itself. So, let me give a definition... Incrementalism refers to the practice of just changing things a little bit... over time... piece by piece.
This would be opposed to going "All In" or whole hog. In my past, when I built my Wrangler, I changed and tweaked and tuned and the re-did all of it. Several times. I probably spent the money and time that I achieved with the final incarnation 3 or 4 times over. I went through … (2 comments)

garages: 9010 Brixham Court in Laurel Springs... Beautiful. - 05/23/08 04:42 PM
I hope you have the opportunity to visit my newest listing.  This is a beautiful and amazing home. We go way back... The seller actually bought the home from me a few years ago. It was only a couple years old, and beautiful. But, he saw more. The unfinished basement was finished... and finished well. I can't use the word custom enough when I start talking about the basement.
Not just a wet bar, but a solid Cherry English Pub bar. Not just a Wine Cellar, but a stacked stone wine cellar with wrought iron gates. Of course there is a … (2 comments)

garages: The Greatest name in racing you've never heard... - 05/20/08 04:54 PM
Smokey Yunick.
And why would I write about a mechanic, crew chief, team owner and owner of The Best Damn Garage in Town (yes, that was his shop) on a real estate blog?  Branding.
No, not mine, his.
Smokey had a brand.  His brand was identified by a Cowboy hat, corncob pipe (or cigar) and whites (pants and shirt).  Everyone in the pits at Daytona and Indy knew him on site for decades.  Aside from the uniform, they knew his reputation.
Smokey had a gift.  His gift was his ability to "read between the rules."  Many would argue that he developed … (15 comments)

garages: Customer Service? - 05/16/08 02:27 PM
I took a few minutes out of my busy blogging schedule today to do a brake job on my wife's van before she took the kids to the beach for a couple of days...  I bought more than I needed to the other day, just to make sure that I didn't end up needing something I couldn't get my hands on after starting.
So, I finished the job and was taking back the items I didn't need.
Talk about disappointing!?!
There I stood with a bag of stuff that needed to be returned.  There were five people at the counter all … (4 comments)

garages: What sort of 4+ car garages are in Gwinnett County right now? - 04/25/08 12:51 PM
That is one of the most frequent questions I get.  Lots of folks want a big garage, and they wonder what is available.
I did my last update a couple of weeks ago on LaneBailey.com.  At that time, I highlighted a couple of the properties.  Of course there is a little bit of inventory change every day, so I thought I would revisit and see what might be different.  One caveat.  Because of MLS rules, I can't really promote a listing without written permission of the listing agent and seller.  So, instead I will just highlight some in a general way.

garages: Driving on french fry oil? - 04/12/08 06:28 AM
Bill Roberts posted a comment on a blog of another subject and mentioned bio-diesel.  He thought I might have an opinion... and that I might have done a little research...
How did he ever guess?
Honestly, if I had the room I would be brewing it up in the garage right now (see, this is another reason for a big garage... I could save money and resources).
Now, if you aren't following yet, let me do a little catching up for you.
When Rudolf Diesel invented the Diesel engine, he designed it to run on peanut oil and other vegetable based … (2 comments)

garages: Are you in a car club? - 04/11/08 04:53 PM
Since my website is geared towards auto enthusiasts looking for homes, it is a great place to find people that are relocating to the Atlanta area that are going to be looking for a new car club.  Since I have a little space, and I know that people moving here that I may help may be looking for car clubs, I'd love to have as many car clubs as possible with banner ads rotating on the site.
No strings.  No trades.  No spam.  Nothing.  I'll need a website for your club in order to send people to when they click … (4 comments)

garages: So, just how many 4+ car garage homes are in Gwinnett County, GA - 04/10/08 03:56 PM
The quick answer is 148.  They range in price from $129,900 to $8.5m.  Right smack in the middle is $749k.
Of course, there are some pretty interesting homes in there, and I profiled a few of them on LaneBailey.com today.
Here are a couple of the highlights:
If you are looking for a 4 car garage on a budget, the first property might fit the bill. It is in Snellville, and has a 2 car attached garage and a detached shop that is 30×30 (metal building with a concrete floor). The home is 3 bedroom and 2 baths and is described … (7 comments)

garages: Looking for a 4+ car garage home in Gwinnett County, GA? - 02/09/08 08:04 AM
Well, there are 154 of them on the market today. They range in price from $139,900 up to $8,500,000.  The median price is about $700,000.  The meat of the market seems to be around $375,000 and $2.5m.  The properties range from incredible estates to modest homes, and from 2 car attached/2 car detached up to 20 car stables.  There are some real nice properties at all sorts of prices.
And, you won't find this anywhere else... I am talking with a builder about developing a subdivision that has lots suitable for second garages/workshops, as well as HOA rules that favor auto … (6 comments)

garages: Legends at Parkview - 02/05/08 03:53 PM
There is a new subdivision coming up in Lilburn... and it looks great.
The Legends at Parkview
I stopped in tonight when the developer hosted a round table discussion for agents and mortgage bankers.  We talked about the philosophy of the builder, Mayfield Homes, as well as some of the finance options that are being offered on the properties.
First, a few basics.
The prices range from the low $500s up to the low $700s.  While there are nine different plans, each has several different elevations... and the builder is willing to modify any of them to better suit the … (4 comments)

garages: 151 4+ car garage homes in Gwinnett County today - 01/23/08 02:55 AM
I just ran my search to see how many homes were currently active in Gwinnett County that had 4 car or larger garages.
151
The top of the range hasn't changed, the $10.5M home is still there, but there are a couple more below the previous $154,900... there is a property at $149,500 and another at $139,900.  The median price is $719k.
I described a lot of the property details here a few weeks ago.  While there has been a little churn in the properties, the overall range is similar.  There are some great deals here.
Since the beginning of the … (2 comments)

garages: How many 4+ car garage homes are available in Gwinnett County? - 01/03/08 01:34 PM
137…  Currently on the market.
I am asked that question periodically.  There are 137 homes on the market as of the time I am writing this that have 4 car garages in Gwinnett County, GA.  They range in price from $10.5M down to $154,900.  They are all over the county.  One has a 20 car garage, most are sliding in with the 4 car.  Several have outbuildings.  One is a horse farm with a big shop.  A couple of the garages have lifts.  A few of them are on Lake Lanier.
The median price is $722k.  The surroundings vary from subdivision … (0 comments)

garages: Those crazy Europeans... drifting a truck - 12/28/07 02:45 AM
I started off looking for another nice WRC video... and ended up with this. It is truly amazing to watch this guy seem to defy physics with this truck... I know that the actual weight of the truck is low in the chassis, so it isn't really ready to flip, but visually it looks impossible. … (6 comments)

garages: Lane's ten nastiest vehicles you've never heard of... - 12/20/07 04:05 PM
And they range from vicious to downright rude... and I like every one of them.  Each of these is about doing something very well... and leaving everything else aside.
#10.  ProDrive P2.  Don't get your hopes up.  You can't buy one.  Prodrive runs the "factory" racing efforts for Subaru's World Rally Team, Aston Martin, and Ford's Australian Supercar Series.  For this little gem, they took a slightly detuned Subaru rally engine, and made a newer, lighter, less compromised car that the Imprezza Rally car.  The P2 is said to be production ready, but only serves as a technology catalog.  0-62mph … (25 comments)
