Aggregation is one part of a social networking and social media strategy.  Simply put, in order to keep up with the rush of infomation, we need to collect, classify and filter it.  This allows us to spend the most time on the most important information, and skip the rest.
With Twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, Flickr and a zillion other networks, aggregating … (6 comments)

social networking: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part V... Some Random Musings... - 10/21/09 06:17 AM
No, the series isn't wrapping up...  But there are a few things that I have wanted to say that were too short for their own post, but didn't fit neatly in other posts...
Community...
Active Rain is a social network, at least as much as FaceBook, and certainly more that Twitter (for most users).  What I mean by this is that there are amny things happening here, just like a community.  There are groups of people with similar interests, just like a community.  And there are lots of opportunities to get together and meet others... just like a community.

social networking: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part IV... Beyond the Blog - 10/19/09 03:43 PM
You've set up your Active Rain account (hopefully you are a RainMaker).  You have tuned your profile to be cooler than than 803.6% of the other ones here.  You have lurked and learned around the network.  And then you wrote (and hopefully published) a few blog posts.
What more could there possibly be?
There are a load of other things to do, and like building a hot rod, it is work that is never done.  There are always new tools and new subjects.  But we have the big things well under way.  Now it is time to get your blog … (4 comments)

social networking: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part II... Where to Start? - 10/17/09 05:28 PM
For someone diving into Active Rain to really get the most out of it, it can be a pretty daunting task.  There are more than 162,000 members and there are literally thousands of blogs posted every day.  There are industry leaders, incredible performers and hugely interesting people posting up information all of the time.
NOBODY can keep up with everything on Active Rain.  At least not is they plan on sleeping or working or remembering our families.
So, we need a shallow end... somewhere to dip in a toe...
While I think that having a blog is something that every good … (7 comments)

social networking: Lane's Active Rain Ambassador Series - Part I... Your Profile - 10/16/09 04:55 AM
One of the very first things a new member to Active Rain should do is "tune their profile".  In order to wring the most performance out of it, we have to make sure it is optimized...
Here are a few things we are optimizing for:
Keyword rich, location and niche specific content (for Search Engine Optimization... SEO) Reader friendly layout (pictures... tagged of course, for SEO) Rich media presentation (more tagged pictures as well as video... excellent for SEO) Testimonials.  Consumers LOVE testimonials... especially video testimonials Links to other sites... passing some "link love" You will notice that a lot of … (42 comments)

social networking: What Chris Brogan had to say at New Media Atlanta - 10/03/09 04:56 PM
If you weren't there, Chris Brogan, co-author of Trust Agents recently spoke at the New Media Atlanta conference.  It was excellent.
He ran through several genres of topics, and even addressed the "Back Noise" channel... by putting it on the screen for all to see.  (Be aware, there is a bit of profanity, and while Chris didn't "drop the F-bomb", PLENTY of people on Back Noise dropped it all over the place)

social networking: Snarkaluffagus Anonimitous... Back Noise - 10/01/09 01:54 AM
While at New Media Atlanta last week I was introduced to a new tool toy.  BackNoise.  I think the easiest ways to describe it are as follows...
Back Noise: baak_noiz,  1. Useful tool to gauge reactions to speakers or other aspects of an event, allowing event participants to freely exchange information with each other during the event.  2. A cross between twitter and a convention of hecklers, often snarking just to snark.
Please note, it is often rude, and the language might make a sailor blush.
But that doesn't mean it isn't a useful tool.  It just needs to be understood … (7 comments)

social networking: Have you read? - 09/26/09 03:14 PM
Chris Brogan?
He was just the keynote speaker yesterday at the New Media Atlanta event here in Atlanta.  Honestly, I knew from the bio that Matt Fagioli sent out (excitedly) that Chris co-wrote Trust Agents... but I hadn't heard of the book, and I didn't know he was "significant".
So shoot me...
I volunteered to help out with the conference... Matt knows I am a sucker for helping out like that... and after helping with registration, I got to spend a little time doing other things.  One of the other things was hanging out in the "Rockstar" Lounge... the VIP area … (7 comments)

social networking: Are you going to New Media Atlanta? - 09/24/09 01:12 PM
Tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 25th) is the day...  There are still a few tickets available for purchase at the event... and there is even a little time to grab a ticket online.
So, are you going to New Media Atlanta?
If you have been to REtechSouth, you have an idea of what New Media Atlanta is going to be like.. but just an idea.  Instead of concentrating on the real estate industry, this is about making the business case for Social Network Marketing.
The speaker list is impressive!  And, for those that get the "Rockstar Pass"... you will have unprecedented access to … (2 comments)

social networking: 8 Tools for the Cool... Or at least Web Savvy Real Estate Agents #8 - 08/28/09 04:16 PM
FaceBook...
I just had to get that out of the way quickly...  We all knew it had to be on the list.  There are 300,000,000 people there, and some of them might actually be looking for a real estate agent.
But PLEASE, don't just wade in and start telling everyone that you are a real estate agent.  Put it in your profile, and maybe every once in a while you might mention something real estate related on your personal stream... but you don't need to assault the world with your "agentness".
It is actually giving the rest of us a bad … (15 comments)

social networking: Were you there? Active Rain/Blogging/Social Networking workshop... Lilburn - 08/28/09 05:14 AM
I mentioned it last week...
Garner Creek at Parkview hosted a workshop on Blogging, ActiveRain and Social Networking on Thursday, August 27th.  During the workshop, the main questions we covered were:
Why blog? Why Active Rain should be your platform? How to incorporate blogging and ActiveRain into a comprehensive social Media Plan? In what other sites should we have a presence? For a 60 minute presentation... that was a LOT of stuff.  As I mentioned during the class, I wanted to make sure people weren't distracted by having to take notes about everything, so I posted up the Powerpoint from the … (1 comments)

social networking: 8 Tools for the Cool Kids... I mean Real Estate Agents #7... see inside... - 08/25/09 02:31 PM
Maybe this one should really be #8... but I just can't help it.

I have talked about ActiveRain, WordPress, Embeddable Tools, Photography, RSS Feeds and Analytics Programs.  And EVERY single one of these things can be learned about at your local (or not so local) reBarCamp (logo linked).  I have been to San Francisco (the first rebarcamp event) and Charlotte.  I am looking forward to Lynchburg, VA (if I can make it) and Raleigh, NC.  If I had the opportunity, I would go to every event I could make it to...
Aside from the AMAZING information absorption opportunity, there are … (10 comments)

social networking: Get your Thinking Cap ready... - 08/25/09 02:00 PM

social networking: In Atlanta? Interested in Active Rain and Blogging? Take a look... - 08/20/09 07:05 AM
I just got the confirmation from Corey at Garner Creek at Parkview.  We are going to be presenting a seminar and discussion about Active Rain, blogging and Social Networking at GarnerCreek at Parkview in Lilburn on Thursday, August 27th.
The program will start at 11:00am, and lunch will follow at Noon.
I'm pretty excited.  This was one of the first things I thought about when I entered the Ambassador Program here at Active Rain.  There is so much great information here, and getting the word out has been a priority for me for a long time.
I have often referred … (10 comments)

social networking: Social Media Breakfast Atlanta #2 is almost here! - 08/16/09 03:11 PM
That's right...
Some of you might remember the first Social Media Breakfast - Atlanta event that Ken Cook and I hosted July 23rd at the Duluth Diner in Gwinnett County.  There were a lot of folks that just couldn't make it all of the way over the Gwinnett County...
Event #2 will be in Cobb County...
That's right, this time we will be meeting at the Atlanta Bread Company near town Center Mall.  We will start being social at 7:00am, with a more formal portion of the program running from 7:30 until about 8:30, and everything should be wrapped up by … (4 comments)

social networking: What is YOUR Social Networking Strategy? - 08/09/09 03:22 PM
We often talk about Social Networking and business strategies.  Some of us even have created Social Networking Strategies.
I have talked about mine.  I'd love to hear about yours...
One point I'd like to stress is that any strategy is like a battle plan.  And every battle plan shares one similarity... it lasts until the first contact with the enemy.  In this case, instead of lasting until first contact with the "enemy", it would be first contact with reality.  That means that we can sit down and create a plan, but when the rubber hits the road... the plan has to … (4 comments)
