things to do: I have a secret... - 02/01/09 02:00 AM
Ok, let me just say that I know a pretty good rumor.  And I am going to tease the heck out of it...  It's about the upcoming REtechSouth...
To start with, here are a couple of things I know... and these are slam dunks...

The event is the brainchild and labor of love of Matt Fagioli of Diamond Dwellings and Brad Nix of Maxsell Realty, two forward thinking brokerages here in the Atlanta area.   This is the second year of the event.  It was thrown together last year in mere weeks, and even at that was THE premier real estate … (4 comments)

things to do: It was pretty cool... - 01/17/09 12:30 PM
You may remember that yesterday I mentioned the World of Wheels.  Well, today was the day.  Two dads, three boys... two 4 year olds and a two year old.  And 10,000 of our favorite people.  (Yes, that means they had a pretty good crowd...)
I haven't been to the WoW for several years.  I've never been a "gotta see it every year" person anyway... I don't think there is enough turnover in the show cars, but I think it is safe to say that we will be back next year.  The show is bigger than I remember, and the attention span … (4 comments)

things to do: It's World of Wheels time... - 01/16/09 02:38 PM
It has been quite a while since I hit the World of Wheels car show.  I have been going to them off and on for 30 years. I have only made it a few times here in Atlanta.
Of course you can expect a bunch of pictures... maybe a video or two.  I am actually pretty jazzed this year.  And there is good reason...  The kids are going.  My best friend is bringing his two boys (aged 4 and 2) along with my 4 year old and I.  For all of the boys it will be their first "big time" … (3 comments)

things to do: Rainy day plans in Gwinnett - 10/24/08 11:34 AM
Today when we got to preschool, we discovered that the school would be closed for the day due to power issues.
And the energetic 4 year old needs to get out and do some things... today was rainy and cold...  So, we decided to run out to Discover Mills and wander around.  One of the things on the long list has been hitting the Slingshot Speedway to run some laps on their GIANT slot car track.  We have spectated on multiple occasions, and it was time to step up to the controls.
When Garrett saw the Lightning McQueen car... the decision … (5 comments)

things to do: Yellow River Game Ranch... deer here... - 09/04/08 10:01 AM
Sitting on the banks of the Yellow River, along US 78 in Lilburn, GA is the Yellow River Game Ranch.
Rather than looking at exotic animals from afar, here the idea is up close and personal… occasionally VERY personal.  Here most of the animals wander the park with the visitors.  Of course the bears, bobcats, cougars, foxes and bison ARE separated from onlookers but deer, peacocks, chickens, rabbits and squirrels are quite happy to walk up and introduce themselves… especially for a cracker or a peanut.  In fact, they may remind you that they would REALLY like a peanut or cracker…

things to do: Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center in Buford, GA - 08/02/08 09:17 AM
Freshly posted on LaneBailey.com...  Complete with 20 photographs and an interactive panorama...
The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center opened not too long ago.  And it is quietly a pretty cool place.
Here are a couple of highpoints from the post:
The first LEED Gold Certified Green Building in Gwinnett County. The largest sloped vegetative roof in the US. A very cool interactive "Water Room" for kids... even big kids. Pervious pavement system to reduce stormwater runoff. 11 different trails ranging up to 2.4 miles, and from easy to strenuous. Facility rental for events. This is a pretty cool place, offering multiple … (4 comments)

things to do: A Father's Day musing - 06/16/08 03:50 PM
I wrote my Father's Day post a while ago, and now that the day has passed, I thought I would write something else.
As i was growing up, my father was fond of just calling me "the boy."  I often referred to him as "old man."  And so, one day I was wandering around a book store and I happened upon a book called "The Old Man and the Boy" which was actually bundled with another book called "The Old Man's Boy Grows Older."  These were by Robert Ruark, a writer for Field & Stream, among other things...  I had never … (4 comments)

things to do: Hanging out with cars... - 06/14/08 03:58 PM
I love my niche. I get to hang out with cars and the people that like them.
So, Tucker is one of the suburb communities here. It is small-town America... minutes from big city. And Main Street is only a few minutes from my house. One Saturday each month through most of the year, the cars gather... and their people, too.

On July 12th they will have the next Tucker cruise-in.
Even though there were severe thunderstorms that rolled through the area earlier in the evening (made me late for the event), there were still 20+ cars that … (11 comments)

things to do: Party in the Park, Thrasher Park in Norcross - 06/14/08 03:35 AM
Last night, Thrasher Park was swinging to the big band tunes of Atlanta 17.  But you probably missed it...  ;^ )
But you don't have to miss the next free concert!
That's right... free concert.  Every other Friday in Thrasher Park, just across the tracks from Historic Downtown Norcross, the city is hosting a free concert in the bandshell.
Last night there were young and old, those that remembered Glenn Miller's In the Mood when it was the newest song on the radio, and those that think Nirvana is old school rock and roll.  And everyone seemed to be having a … (5 comments)

things to do: Mud 4 Blood event May 10th - 05/02/08 02:47 PM
If you are a blood donor in the Atlanta area... or if you want to be, the GBR 4WD Club is hosting its 5th Annual Mud 4 Blood Drive on May 10th at Bass Pro Shops.  M4B has worked its way up to being one of LifeSouth's biggest one day drives of the year, and this year will be no exception.
The GBR hosts this event each year in conjunction with almost all of the 4WD clubs in the Atlanta area.  In addition to the blood drive, the event features a GIANT raffle.  Area restaurants donate food certificates and 4WD vendors … (3 comments)

things to do: Land of the Gladiators and Home of the Braves - 03/18/08 12:51 PM
Gwinnett County, GA is growing some more.
Gwinnett is already a vibrant and active suburb of Atlanta, GA... and it is getting better all of the time.  Gwinnett will be welcoming the AAA affiate of the Atlanta Braves to the new stadium that is being built near Lawrenceville.  Formerly of Richmond, VA, the Gwinnett Braves will be playing here starting in April of 2009.
Just a few miles away, the Gwinnett Center and Arena is home to the Arena Football League Georgia Force.  It is also the home of the East Coast Hockey League Gwinnett Gladiators.  The Gladiators are the … (0 comments)

things to do: Hockey... and real estate - 12/18/07 03:56 PM
Back to the stretches…
We just got back from the Thrashers/Lightning game. The Thrashers were on fire (for a change) and beat Tampa Bay 6-2. Everything worked. Passes connected. Bounces went the right way. The calls were pretty good. For the Thrashers, anyway…
Here are the highlights from last night's game. We were running late, and missed the first period... THREE Thrasher's goals... but they scored three more so we wouldn't feel left out. The video below is a Kovalchuk compilation from last season.
In a lot of ways, real estate transactions are similar. Luckily, real estate professionals are a lot … (4 comments)

things to do: Another in the never ending series of posts about building a website... Part ZCXII - 12/01/07 02:38 AM
I think I have done around 121,894 posts about building my website...  Ok, maybe not, but it seems like it.
Last night I crashed it.  Bad.  Like off-line for hours bad.
But, I learned (or was reminded about) a few things.
Always back up files before making changes.  I did, and it saved me DAYS of rebuilding content. Always know what you are going to do before taking it on.  I didn't, and it took the site down for 6 frustrating hours.  Did I mention backing things up? It might be helpful to have a "dummy site" that tests can … (16 comments)

things to do: Good Bread, Good Meat... - 11/27/07 02:54 PM
Every once in a while, I need to wander off on a tangent. Tonight, while driving back from the initial meeting for volunteers at the NHL All-Star Game, I drove by Fat Matt's Rib Shack (and let's not forget the Chicken Shack next door). So... I got to thinking about some of the great places I have been lucky enough to eat at here in Atlanta. I know it isn't about real estate, but we live here... and we have to eat... and if we are going to eat, we should eat well. I guess I should start with Fat Matt's. … (5 comments)

things to do: Football Night in America... ok, Lilburn, GA - 11/09/07 03:20 PM
We just got back from a fun event. Ok, if I were a serious fan of Parkview, it might not have been as fun... but if I were a serious fan of Brookwood, it would have been a hoot. But, I'm not going to actually talk about the game, except in the most circumspect of ways. I want to talk about the event. Despite our best intentions, we didn't get up to Parkview High School until almost 7:15. Since the game was scheduled to start at 7:30, we thought it would be ok... and if it weren't for the fact that … (0 comments)

things to do: Looking forward to a little camping - 09/30/07 04:27 PM
You heard it.  At the end of the week, I'll be off to the wilds to do a little camping.  While it isn't as much of an outdoor experience as some, it is a nice place to get away to.
The Southern Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA) has their 21st Annual Dixie Run outside of Murphy, NC in the Tellico OHV area.  I don't think I will even get to fourwheel this year (not really that unusual), since I will be spending most of my time in the registration area.  However, my phone won't have service, and I won't be reachable … (2 comments)

things to do: And now a word from our sponsor... (ok, not really) - 09/13/07 03:25 PM
August 27th I sat down and wrote a post called "A is for Appraisal".  In less than three weeks, I have plundered through the alphabet almost to the conclusion... of this round.  But, while some of the posts have been fun, the last post was a bit tougher.  I have had that post on my mind for a couple of weeks, but I still didn't know exactly how it would turn out.  >side note.  When I write these posts, they just pretty much write themselves.  I just get to watch.<
Anyway, after writing the last one, I needed to remind myself … (7 comments)
