kids: Gardner, KS Park Champion Program - 06/08/12 11:20 AM


Gardner, KS Parks and Recreation Department has a Park Champion Program this summer.  Kids 12 and under can pick up a passport at City Hall which they can take around to different parks and activities in Gardner, KS.  After completing an activity at one of the Gardner parks, they visit City Hall again to get their passport stamped.  Once they have their passport books completed by visiting all of the parks listed and completing the activities, kids can take their passports back to City Hall and receive a Park Champion t-shirt!

Pumpkin patch in Lawrence, KS!  There are many pumpkin patches around the Kansas City area.  One of my family's favorites is the Schaake's Pumpkin Patch at 1791 North 1500 Road in Lawrence, Kansas.  
Schaake's Pumpkin Patch in Lawrence, Kansas is free to visit.  There are no admission charges.  They offer free tractor pulled rides out into the pumpkin patch.  Schaake's has a nice variety of pumpkins from tiny jack-o-lanterns up to the mamothly huge sized pumpkins!  Check out the photo to the right for some of the varieties Schaake's carried last year. Pick your own blueberries near Louisburg, KS!  One of the biggest attractions near Southern Johnson County, KS is the Berry Patch.  The Berry Patch is about 20 min. south of Overland Park and is less than an hour drive from most anywhere in the KC Metro Area

What makes the Berry Patch so great is you can pick your own berries!  Families, couples, groups, and individuals come back every year to pick their own plump berries.

My grandsons had a blast while visiting the Johnson County Museum.  They spent quite a bit of time playing with stuffed chickens and a pretend chicken coop.  According to the boys, the chicken in this photo met an untimely end, but thankfully it came back to life to squwak and run around some more.  They sure had a blast at the museum!

Looking for something fun in the Kansas City Area to take the kids to? Make plans to visit the Johnson County Museum in Shawnee, Kansas.  The museum is full of Johnson County history, but that's not all.  It is also a fun place to take the kids where they can explore how life was like in the early 1900's.  Oh, and it's FREE!

So you've just survived the move into your new home and finally finished unpacking, but now what are you going to do with all those moving boxes?  Don't throw those boxes out! With a couple rolls of colored duct tape and some markers, your kids can turn those ugly boxes into quite amazing creations.  My grandkids have made mail boxes, a pretend computer, dog houses, and even a giant castle, complete with a draw bridge.
