web content: If You Know How To Write Direct Mail, You Can Prepare Web Content That Gets Results - 11/20/11 11:09 PM

Although not as popular as it once was, the principles of direct mail apply equally to web content.

In some respects, web content is like direct mail...only better.

Like direct mail, web content is a vehicle that allows us to send our marketing messages to prospective clients.

Direct mail has three specific purposes:

to introduce ourselves to prospective clients to help prospective clients understand how we can help them to encourage prospective clients to contact us for more information
Web Content Is The Same ... But Different

Web content shares these same three … (1 comments)

web content: How To Write Great Promotional & Web Content - 02/17/10 10:35 PM
In my post about Do it Yourself Advertising , Pam McInnes  responded:
“...I totally agree that if agents don't possess the talent to write effective advertising copy they should hire a coach to learn, I can't agree that we should hire someone to do the job for us...
“So I'm with you 150% about hiring a coach to learn [emphasis added], but can't agree about getting someone to do it for me.”
Pam must have been reading my mind and anticipating this post.
Who Better Than You Knows...?
Regardless of whether it's copy for a brochure or new … (2 comments)

web content: 5 Reasons Why FAQs Make Great Web Content - 11/15/09 09:25 PM
I am a great fan of the FAQ...Frequently Asked Questions... feature found on many websites.
However, for reasons that are not immediately apparent to me, until recently, I had not included any FAQs on my own website.
When I recently prepared such a feature...about a niche market...I was immediately struck with what great web content FAQs make.
Here are 5 reasons why:
1. Visitor Satisfying
offers important and relevant information in an easy-to-read format 2. Keep Visitors On Your Site Longer
by including links in your answers, you can offer even more sound information, which will help keep … (16 comments)

web content: Openings Are Good...But Closings Are Better - 09/29/09 11:13 PM
Back in the days BC...Before Computers...paper was the lifeblood of offices, regardless of the nature of the business.
Those of us who maintained offices had never even heard of the term “paperless office”. What a great concept. Unfortunately computers seem to have generated more paper rather than eliminated it.
Driven By Paper
Like typical offices of the time, the offices for which I was responsible were driven by paper.
With the help of some really good secretaries, we managed to keep the paper flow under control.
Personally I loved opening files: Nice fresh file folders...color-coded...rich with hope and potential.
However, as … (4 comments)

web content: Developing A Visitor-Satisfying Website - 07/09/09 12:16 AM
In yesterday's blog post, I announced the launch of a featured website component of my own website.
As part of this process, I also offered a free website review.
Several people accepted this offer...today I will review these sites and email my comments to the site owners.
A Website Is Always A Work in Progress
A website review can be just as effective for sites that are under construction or due for review as they are for 'completed' sites.
In fact, all websites should be considered under construction or due for review: there is no such thing as a 'completed' … (1 comments)

web content: Free Home (Page) Inspection - 07/07/09 11:22 PM
Until recently, the last time I reviewed and updated my home page was when I completed 50 pages of content.
My site has evolved in many different ways since then.
Your Home Page Is Like A Front Door To A House

As I was preparing to update my home page, I came across a comment that made a lot of sense to me:
“Equate your home page to the front door of a house. Your voice...will determine what your visitors do with that door”
This comment is found on page 88 of Make Your Content PREsell, a very helpful...and … (8 comments)

web content: You CAN Develop A Good Website From A Template-Based Corporate Format - 06/23/09 11:29 PM
Using a template-based corporate format, you an develop your own unique website that encourages visitors to contact you.
Corporate Websites
If you are a real estate agent, the chances are good to excellent that you work with local office of a real estate company such as Century 21, Re/Max or a smaller national or regional company.
This means that for purposes of developing your own website, participating in your corporate website arrangement is probably the easiest and most accessible option.
Unfortunately after choosing this option, too many agents do little else to develop their own web space.
As a result, … (5 comments)

web content: Blogging: Ideas, Experience and Learning Opportunities - 06/18/09 11:13 PM
Blogging allows you to play with ideas, share your experience and benefit from some rich learning opportunities.
This being my 150th blog post, it's appropriate to reflect on my blogging experience. (Yes I know...the numbers show that this is only #148. I deleted 2 posts re-use the content for other purposes.)
In a nutshell...I love blogging.
Playing With Ideas
Sometimes it's fun just to play with ideas and see where the writing process takes them.
That is what happened yesterday.
That post was intended as a fun piece about chickens in the backyard but ended up as a more … (5 comments)

web content: Here Is How The Principle Of 'Content Is King' Works In Practice - 06/16/09 11:55 PM
Good web content is clear, concise, complete and client focused.
Newspapers As Information Vehicles
Ever since Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1440, newspapers have been an important vehicle for distributing great amounts of information on a variety of topics.
For the most part, this information has been presented in a well organized and user-friendly manner.
The website of The Mortgage Group Ontario achieves the same results.
With the look & feel of a well-planned and reader-friendly newspaper, it offers site visitors a huge amount of useful information on a variety of topics. Good Solid Information

web content: What's The Curb Appeal of Your Website? - 06/09/09 11:11 PM
Although not as critical as your home page, the look & feel of your website is an important element.
The Look of 'Look & Feel'
Look & feel refers to how your site looks and feels to visitors.
If your home page is the front door to your website, the look is its curb appeal. Few people will purchase a home just because of its curb appeal.
Good curb appeal encourages them to go inside of the home and check it out. On the other hand, bad curb appeal often discourages prospective purchasers from even inspecting the inside of a home.

web content: Exclusive Benefits For You - 05/12/09 11:52 PM
Upgrade your 'information machine' and enjoy exclusive benefits in your market.
Although I tend to welcome change, I can certainly understand why so many people are change-averse.
A Change To A Change
Whenever we initiate change, we are never totally sure where the process will take us.
That is exactly what happened to the change in my practice that I wrote about last week.
Specifically I wrote about my decision to start accepting requests for help preparing website content.
So here we are, 1 week later and my first revision to the plan. It's kind of like releasing new software … (1 comments)

web content: How To Reap The Most Rewards From Your Website - 05/11/09 12:23 AM
All websites are going to change in a big way within the next few years.
In case you missed it, Bill Fletcher , offered a very insightful comment in response to my post about the importance of content.
He said:
“I believe all websites are going to change in a big way within the next few years.
“Inert sites will be replaced by business engines.
“Brochure sites will be replaced with information machines.
“I am not sure a little fresh content is going to be enough to keep up.
“The first wave of next generation sites will … (60 comments)

web content: Content Is King...So What Does That Do For You? - 05/06/09 11:45 PM
To satisfy visitors enough for them to contact you, you need the best content.
As a writer, I am interested in virtually anything to do with content.
Not surprisingly, the comments responding to yesterday's post immediately caught my attention.
Visitors Want Information
Heath Coker  commented:
“Content is king. It isn't just pretty pictures of houses that may or may not be good values either.”
Whenever the the concept of web content is mentioned, invariably we hear that content is king...intended to illustrate the importance of content.
However, what the expression does not tell us is why content is important.
