A Painting - Wood & Swink Post Office, "Before and After".
Evinston, Florida
As an artist, I am always looking at things differently than most. I have painted several nostalgic businesses around the country.  This is Post Office and General Store, that I found in Evinston, Florida, located in north central Florida.  I was exhibiting in downtown Gainesville during that time.

A Painting  - A & W Root Beer, Taylor, MI, "Before and After".

As an artist, I am always looking at things differently than most. I have painted several nostalgic businesses around the country.  This is an A & W Drive in that was near an Art Festival in Wyandotte, Michigan, where I exhibited for many years.  This A & W was located in the nearby community of Taylor, also just south of Detroit. The acrylic painting is 24" x 36" on stretched canvas.

History of a Painting - "The Corner Shelf".
Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
While looking for some antique items for subject material for paintings, we stopped at a broken down old farm house along the road, we called the junk shop, because there was not much in the way of valuable antiques there..  The sign painted on old old piece of wood said, "Antiques".  The shop was located along a 2-lane road on central Georgia near the town of Pine Mountain.
There was nobody around as we walked around the outside of the building.  As we were behind the home, a car drove up, and … (17 comments)

History of a Painting -
"Steak and Shake"
St. Louis, MO.

Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
While exhibiting in the area of St. Louis, I decided to see what they had in their area that was nostalgic. After some discussion with area locals, found that the oldest Steak and Shake still in existence, was just off of Hwy 55, in St. Louis.  Of course I had to check it out, along with some other possible places.
The Steak and Shake picture drew attention wherever I went.  I put the cars into the painting to add to the time period of … (4 comments)

History of a Painting -
Mr. Peanut at the Peanut Shop,
South Bend, IN.
Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
I remember in the 1950's and 60's, in the middle of South Bend, at Michigan St. and Monroe, there was always an aroma of Peanuts in the air. Planters Peanuts had company stores and we were fortunate to have one in our city. Mr Peanut, himself would even walk around outside giving samples of peanuts that you could buy in the store. I spent many-a-days visiting that store.  I was always fascinated with the neon sign of Mr. Peanut  throwing his cane … (9 comments)

 History of a Painting -
"Hot Diggity Dogs", Chicago, Illinois

Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
When you go to Chicago, everybody knows where North Michigan Street is located. Next to the Chicago River is the Wrigley Building, a Chicago landmark in itself, but across the street to the east and one level down stood a landmark of its own. Hot Diggity Dogs was a small building that sat in the midst of a huge parking area at 251 E. Ohio Street near the corner of Ohio St and Fairbanks. I am not sure when the business opened, but they had … (12 comments)

"Singin' in the Rain"
Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©
Located in the heart of Atlanta at 660 Peachtree Street NE, the FOX Theatre, built and opened in 1929, with vaudville and later cinematography, now features traveling Broadway Shows and Theatrical performances. Since the theatre has become an Icon to Atlanta, I felt it necessary to create a painting of the famous FOX.
The original painting was sold at the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park, just east of Atlanta. The festival is one of the top rated festivals in the country. Prints of the … (9 comments)

History of a Painting, McDonald's, Mishawaka, Indiana.
It was the 1950's, when Neon, Milk Shakes and cool cars came on the scene.  In the midst of it all, we had heard of a new restaurant that had burgers, fries and shakes.  You couldn't go inside to eat and they didn't have car hops that brought it out to your car.  The way it worked was, you walked up to the window on the outside of the building and ordered your food, they prepared it, put it in a bag and you either sat in your car or took it home to … (8 comments)

History of a Painting, The Lost Mountain Store.
Located west of Marietta, Georgia there is a mountain that is called "Lost Mountain", because you can see it in the distance, but when you get there, it's gone. There is an old general store that has been there since about 1900.  I have heard all kinds of tails about the store and its owner, but like many stories from the past, I am not sure how many are true, or how many were made up.

History of a Painting. On the Road in Marietta, GA
"The Big Chicken"
I was told by an Eastern Airlines Pilot, many years ago, that when flying into Atlanta, Georgia, when he saw the big chicken, he knew when to start his descent into Hartsfield Airport.  The Big Chicken was 68 feet high.  The eye rolled around and the tail feather on the back of its head went up and down. It was called "Johnny Rebs, Chick, Chuck and Shake." You can just about guess what they served.
When I arrived in Marietta, in 1983, the building was occupied by Kentucky … (12 comments)

History of a Painting, On the Road in Senoia, Georgia
Fried Green Tomatoes
If you recall in the movie where Buddy was killed by the train, it was the Threadgood house, where they were having their festivities. This home was actually a bed and breakfast Inn,  located in Senoia, Georgia.  It is a historic home that sat across the street from a railroad track which was perfect for the story line.  The paved street was covered with dirt for the movie to fit the time period.

History of a Painting, Juliette, Georgia,
The Whistle Stop Cafe.
The Movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" became a classic and was filmed during a time when I lived in Georgia. Last week in History of a painting, I highlighted the Whistle Stop Depot. This week I'm showing you the painting I did of the Whistle Stop Cafe, in Juliette, Georgia, the location where the movie, "Fried Green Tomatoes" was filmed.

History of a Painting, Train Depot, Juliette, GA,
from the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes.
While traveling and exhibiting in Art shows and festivals, I had done a number of shows in and around Atlanta, Georgia.  When the movie came out "Fried Green Tomatoes, we found that the movie was filmed in Georgia and that you could actually eat at the Whistle Stop Cafe. One weekend, we decided to visit the restaurant and cafe.

History of a Painting, Tilley Park,
Cartersville, Georgia.
While watching movies growing up, we see places that are the ideal places to live.  Of course that's only in the movies. The quaint little towns, with the parks, gazebos and Ferris wheels, rides and such. Well the story of the Tilley Park painting started in 1983, when I was commissioned to paint a painting of a covered bridge in Euharlee, Georgia. In order to get to the covered bridge, we had to drive through Cartersville, Georgia.
