Elkhart Historian Demonstrates the First GPS
Paul Thomas, Historian of Elkhart County and founder of the "Time Was" Museum on north Main Street, in Elkhart, Indiana shows many of the inventions made in Elkhart, Indiana. Here is a clip of his demonstration of a GPS made for cars, in 1930, although it was not called that at the time.

Located in downtown Elkhart, Indiana, the "Time Was" Museum, was founded by Historian Paul Thomas, who has collected information dating back to 1856.  The museum houses photos, memorabilia and newspapers, located on 2 floors of the building.

Mr. Thomas is a delight as he tells the history of Elkhart, using many props from actual inventions that originated locally. School children are fascinated by the different hats he uses to tell the stories of the founding of Elkhart. People of all ages visit the museum as well as large groups, … (17 comments)

Who is Paul Thomas, You Say?  Let me tell you.
Paul Thomas was not here before Elkhart, but he lived here all his life.  Mr Thomas ran a small business on North Main Street. Paul Thomas Shoes was in the middle of Elkhart. He served as City Councilman ans many other committee around town.  In 1988, after retiring, he turned his 2 story building into the City's Historic Museum, collecting Elkhart Artifacts, photographs and other memorabilia.
