LAST WEEK The Federal Reserve helped calm the markets with their first major reaction to the liquidity crisis. The Fed lowered their "Discount Rate" and extended the widow for overnight lending to banks from overnight to a 30-day window. This allows banking institutions to borrow money at less cost for a longer period of time. This helped banks provide liquidity to clients and continue to fund home loans. LAST WEEK Last weeks economic calendar was lean but it was an action packed week in the stock market. The DOW reached a record high of 14,000 and looked like it was going higher. It was quickly stopped beginning with disappointing earnings from Goggle and other big companies and the continued fears of the Sub-prime mortgage situation and tightening of mortgage credit. With all of the financial news and Fed testimony the stock market was the driving force for the bond market. It is earnings season so the stock market is action packed with the DOW hitting an all time high of 14,000 and quickly retreating.
