long beach island: State Supreme Court Boosts Long Beach Island Dune Replenishment Efforts - 07/11/13 10:11 PM
Beach replenishment at the Jersey Shore got a big boost this week when the State Supreme Court overruled a $375,000 award in a Harvey Cedars beach replenishment case, saying the project in fact provided benefits to the property owners.  A state appellate court had ruled last year that the borough pay $375,000 to the couple to compensate them for having a portion of their property taken for the Army Corps of Engineers beach replenishment project, partially obstructing their ocean view.
The Harvey Cedars beach project was completed in 2010.  But in other towns on Long Beach Island there are still property owners that refuse to … (2 comments)

long beach island: Locals Take Back Long Beach Island! - 10/17/12 12:12 AM
I realize that the Jersey Shore economy needs summer visitors.  That's not to say I'm sad to see them leave! My favorite time of year at the Jersey Shore is when the traffic lights on Long Beach Island are just blinking and there's a chill in the air.  That's when I can visit the beach and the Barnegat Light House  with very few people around!

long beach island: Beat the Heat at the Jersey Shore! - 06/09/11 12:36 AM
Jersey Shore temperatures are expected  to be close to 98° again today.  That's hot for this time of year! The Jersey Shore has some of the best beaches on the east coast, and temperatures will be a little cooler here.  On top of cooler temperatures, Jersey Shore beaches generate $35 billion every year in tourism dollars for the state. To protect this resource, the state takes water quality very seriously. New Jersey's Sanitary Code requires beaches to be closed when bacteria exceeds a certain level.  The beach will remain closed until a sample within the standard is obtained.  The first water quality tests … (12 comments)

long beach island: Shaking Off Cabin Fever at the Jersey Shore! - 02/17/11 11:11 AM
A great thing about living at the Jersey Shore is you're never too far from the Atlantic Ocean.   With temperatures on the mainland at 65 degrees today, and finding 90 minutes in my schedule, it meant only one thing. Over the Causeway to Long Beach Island.  Though it was a little cooler over there, man and dog were shaking off cabin fever!
Fresh Ocean air! It's Spring at the Jersey Shore! And dogs be here!

It's December, and I am getting back to my winter schedule.  That means my gym visit is early!  After working out,  sometimes my car knows just what I need.  I don't know how it knows, but it takes me across the Route 72 Causeway to Long Beach Island.  Just in time for the sunrise.

What does October first mean to you?For many it means preparing for winter and hunkering down.  Others face endless days of leaf raking.  And the more diligent among us will be working on their 2011 business plans. For dogs at the Jersey Shore who have watched us, and vacationers, flock to Surf City and Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island all summer long, October first has a whole different meaning!
It's when their beach season begins! ......Keep your dog leashed, pick up after the pup...and remember, leave only footprints!

As Hurricane Earl moves north, it appears that the Jersey Shore will be spared.  It's expected to be cloudy with some rain today, the full fury of the storm will more north further east out in the Atlantic.
Weather forcasters say the sun will shine tomorrow, but it will be a bit windy.  It's shaping up to be a great Labor Day weekend at the Jersey Shore, and Long Beach Island in particular.

long beach island: After the Storm...Long Beach Island, NJ - 11/16/09 10:47 PM
New Jersey's coastal counties have been declared a disaster area by Governor Corzine.
Though the rain and wind subsided over the weekend, yesterday was the first day local and state officials could take a firsthand view of the damage.  They were out in force on Long Beach Island, calling last week's storm the worst in a decade.
Most lagoon front property in Little Egg Harbor and  Manahawkin fared well, some of the beaches on Long Beach Island were not so lucky. Bulkheads and jetties saw some real action during the 4 days of wind and rain.   The beaches in Surf … (13 comments)

long beach island: We Don't Need No Stinking Badges, On Thursday's In Beach Haven! - 08/18/09 11:42 PM
Tomorrow, Thursday and for the 2 additional Thursday’s through the Labor Day 2009 weekend, ‘we don’t need no stinking badges!’   The Borough of Beach Haven, on Long Beach Island, is making a last ditch effort to attract day trippers and mainland locals to the lovely beaches of this southern Long Beach Island community.

Thursday’s will be FREE BEACH DAYS in Beach Haven!  No (stinking) badges required.  It’s an effort to draw beach goers to the southern end of Long Beach Island to spend money they might have spent on a badge elsewhere in the community.   Most mainland locals, me included, don’t … (11 comments)

long beach island: Clear Sailing on the Long Beach Island Causeway This Summer! - 06/24/09 11:42 PM
Well, come on down the shore!  The New Jersey Department of Transportation has agreed to delay repairs to the Causeway, the only bridge linking Long Beach Island, NJ with the mainland. When plans for the repairs were announced last spring, the work was to take place after Labor Day.  But, the state wanted to use the fed's stimulus package money and then said the work would begin on July 20th.Well, since that announcement the outrage from residents, visitors and local officials has forced the DOT to reconsider, and now we're back to the old repair date, sometime after Labor Day!So it'll be clear … (8 comments)

long beach island: Long Beach Island, NJ...A Troubled Bridge Over Water - 06/19/09 12:47 AM
How do you spell bad timing?  Ask the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).  It's planning to start work on the Route 72 Causeway in July!  That's the only access from the mainland to Long Beach Island, unless you come by boat.
DOT officials had said in March construction would not take place during the summer months due to the tourism season. But the project was expedited to start July 20 (though the newly erected signs say the work will begin on July 17th).  That's because the project was funding received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and must be spent quickly … (6 comments)
