new jersey: Visiting Southern Ocean County...Parkway Info - 11/25/08 11:47 PM
Traveling on the NJ Parkway this Weekend?

We’re used to traffic at the Jersey Shore, it increases Memorial Day and continues through Labor Day.
There are two heavy traffic days off season, one in the spring (Mother’s Day) and one this weekend, Thanksgiving!

To make your drive safe and easy, remember…
· The speed limit on the Garden State Parkway is 65 mph. But between Exits 80 and 100 the speed limit is only 55. Lower limits around construction areas should be expected.
· Keep right except to pass.
· Tolls on the Parkway vary and maybe 35-cents or … (1 comments)

new jersey: What is that in Tuckerton, NJ? - 11/20/08 10:39 PM

A Statue Stands in Tuckerton, NJ!

When I first moved back to southern Ocean County many years ago, the statute in the middle of Tuckerton was always a bit of a mystery to me.
It sits on a small island on Route 9, where the state highway and Great Bay Boulevard intersect, in between the Tuckerton Seaport and Lake Pohatcong.
The statue is a tribute to those who gave their lives in World War I, and was erected by the Improved Order of the Red Men.
Here’s a little background on this very old fraternal organization…

new jersey: NJ, NY, CT Want Finance Industry Employee Bailout! - 11/20/08 12:48 AM
Where Does It End? (My Rant!)
First we bailout financial institutions, the auto makers see a good thing and want to jump on the gravy train…Now the Governors of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut want the feds to bail out thousands of financial industry workers who are loosing their jobs!

 This is incredible!
The three Governors have asked for $48 million in emergency grants, allowing states to give each laid off worker $12,500 to help them find jobs and relocate. Pardon me, but what are these guys smoking?
In a letter to the US Labor Secretary, Governors Corzine (NJ), … (20 comments)

new jersey: Changes Proposed to NJ Pinelands Development! - 11/18/08 09:16 PM

Pinelands Development Changes Proposed!

For the first time in 28 years, the New Jersey Pinelands Commission is considering realignment of Pinelands zoning boundaries.
The Pinelands National Reserve in New Jersey was created by Congress under the National Parks and Recreation Act of 1978. It is the first National Reserve in the nation and covers more than 1 million acres in 7 NJ counties.
In 1979, under the guidance then Governor Brendan Byrne, the Pinelands Preservation Act was adopted. It’s a state and federal partnership to preserve, protect and enhance the natural and cultural resources of the Pine … (2 comments)

new jersey: Honoring Veterans...Past & Present - 11/10/08 12:48 AM
How It Came About...A Brief History

Veterans Day, honoring military veterans is an annual holiday. It is not only a federal holiday; it is recognized and celebrated by every state. It is usually celebrated on November 11th. In other parts of the world it is also celebrated, but called Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.
It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, by Germany, that ended World War I. The major hostilities were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

It was first celebrated on November 11th … (7 comments)

new jersey: A Fox in the Hen House? - 11/08/08 12:02 AM

Does the Nation Really Want NJ’s Problems

Some troubling news in New Jersey this morning…during the last fiscal year (which ended June 30th) the state accumulated nearly $32 billion in debt.
What that means is NJ ranks third in the nation in the heaviest debt load as a percentage of personal income. We rank behind Hawaii and Massachusetts.

New Jersey’s debt increased $2.1 billion over last year. Now there is a surplus fund with $650 million ready to be used to pay down the debt, but it’s likely that will be used for “unspecified one time expenses”. … (10 comments)

new jersey: Hi, I'm From the Government...here to Help! - 10/14/08 02:40 AM
Hi, we’re from the government and we’re here to help! A scary statement for New Jersey taxpayers.
While many problems require government assistance I’m not here to debate when and where state or federal action is needed.
Here in New Jersey, a panel of legislators has approved a measure to make mortgage lenders pay $2,000 before taking a homeowner with a sub prime mortgage into foreclosure.
Is it too little to late, or too much all together?
The proposal was part of a bill designed to slow a surge in foreclosures hitting the state because borrowers cannot afford … (4 comments)

new jersey: What Do You Miss Most? - 10/13/08 08:00 AM

Fall has arrived at the Jersey Shore! The fall/winter clothes are out of storage and the comforters on the beds.
Being close to the Ocean, we enjoy a few extra weeks of warmth here at the Jersey Shore. But temperatures are cooling.
Summer is my favorite season, though the crowds at the Jersey Shore can be trying at times.
What I’ll miss most…
· The first Jersey corn at the farm stand
· The first Jersey tomatoes at the farm stand
· The warm sun that you can feel in your bones
· Cook outs and long … (6 comments)

new jersey: Don't Miss the Deadline! - 10/13/08 12:57 AM
This is not a political point of view. It is a reminder for all New Jersey residents to register to vote for the upcoming November 4th Election. The deadline is tomorrow October 14th. In addition to the Presidential race, we have one US Senate candidate to elect and all 13 seats in the House up for grabs. New Jersey also has two ballot questions to decide. One of the State constitutional amendments would require future state borrowing be approved by the voters.
and the other would allow local judges to serve in more than one municipality.

new jersey: Killer Rabbits and Pot Belly Pigs - 10/12/08 01:46 AM
The 14th Annual Pinelands Jamboree was a huge success...I got to pet a rabbit, large enough to put a real scare into Monty Python devotees, and I met Dottie, a pot belly pig about 6 months old…very cute! No lions, tigers and bears, but goats, ponies and fancy chickens! All the critters were courtesy of local 4-H Clubs. I grew up with horses, rabbits, chickens, dogs, cats etc, so I got to be a kid again! There were also crafts, books about the NJ Pinelands and its rich history, food, music and all things Piney! The Jamboree whet my appetite for … (6 comments)

From 10am til 4pm the sounds of country, blue grass and folk music will ring through the Park! new jersey: POW/MIA Recognition Day - 09/20/08 02:26 AM

Yesterday marked POW/MIA Recognition Day in the United States. It’s been celebrated for 24 years.
On that day, the third Friday in September, America honors all Prisoners Of War and those Missing In Action, those returned and those still missing and unaccounted for from our nation's wars and conflicts.
It passed with little fanfare here in New Jersey, marked with a ceremony at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel. With about 125 people in attendance, New Jersey also marked Gold Star Mothers Recognition Day, which is celebrated nationally the last Sunday in September. Gold Star Mothers is an … (5 comments)

new jersey: Welcome to New Jersey...Some Info About Us! (Humor) - 07/02/08 02:15 AM
If you plan to visit New Jersey this Holiday weekend, here are some ways to tell us locals from the out of towners...
The locals don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges."

It's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags.
Breakfast on the go is a hard roll with butter.
The locals have known the way to Seaside Heights since they were seven.
They know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
We know what a "jug handle" is.
New Jerseyans  know that there are no "beaches" here --there's the shore--and you don't go "to the shore," you go "down the shore." … (12 comments)

new jersey: Business As Usual in NJ! - 06/24/08 11:00 PM

New Jersey's new budget (FY 2009) has been approved by the Senate and Assembly, and sent to the Governor for final approval.  The $32.9 measure passed both houses of the Legislature Monday with little fanfare.
No so for the $3.9 billion school construction bonding bill which was hotly debated for more than four hours before gaining approval.
At issue is the amount of the bonding proposal and the refusal of the Governor and Legislature to put the plan before the voters.
The Governor originally called for borrowing only $2.5 billion to complete school construction projects in the state's most distressed school districts.  … (0 comments)
