Lee Cunningham recently attended a meeting with Dave Liniger, founder and owner of RE/MAX, in which he told agents about a recent meeting with the Treasury Department. In the meeting Dave detailed ways in which the foreclosure crises could be greatly alleviated by encouraging short sales. Short sales is the sale of properties which are in the foreclosure process. It's called a short sale when the home sells for less then what the homeowners owe on it therefore needing the bank to forgive the remaining debt. In a follow up of recent news over state funding of repairs to the Donaldson Center, the State Budget and Control Board has approved $3 million for the project. The funds will provide maintenance to the aging air force base in order to protect a contract with Lockheed Martin that employs 1200 here. Lockheed Martin has yet to extend their contract, but it originally hinged on the repairs being completed. Despite an 8.1% drop in Upstate housing permits in the first half of 2007, several out of state home building companies have announced developments or started construction in the area. In the wake of budget cuts that slashed $3 million that would make improvements to Donaldson Center and extend Lockheed Martin's lease, Bobby Harrell of Charleston has announced plans to secure the funding. He proposes to take the funds from Coordinating Council funds, generally designed for luring new companies, and using them to keep an existing company with 1200 jobs here in the Upstate of South Carolina. The funds could be replaced in next year's budget, but Governor Sanford has criticized the move, questioning its legality.
