nyc music scene: Tommy Shea talks about Guitarist Joe Bonamassa with Gary Leogrande - 03/02/15 11:08 AM
“I’m 63 years old and I’ve seen some of the greatest rock bands and guitarists of all time, including Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Moody Blues and the Beatles. Joe Bonamassa is right up there with the best.  He plays and sings rock and blues like Eric Clapton — and Clapton has showed up at a show to jam with him!”
This is what Tommy Shea, my partner Peggy’s husband, told me when I asked him how he liked the recent Joe Bonamassa concert they went to. The concert was at Radio City Music Hall last month.  “Like a lot of New … (1 comments)

nyc music scene: Agnes Obel at the Bowery Ballroom - 08/30/14 07:05 AM
On Thursday, August 14, I once again ventured across the Hudson to see a great, sold-out show at the Bowery Ballroom (6 Delancey St., NYC).

The show featured Agnes Obel, 34 year-old Danish singer, songwriter, and piano player who writes, records, and produces her own music. She’s an attractive blonde in an “Uma Thurman” kind of way.  Her biggest fan base is in Denmark, Norway, and Germany, and today she resides in Berlin.

Agnes has sold almost half a million albums to date with her debut album Philharmonics, released in 2010, and Aventine, released in October, 2013.

With a nod to a band like Robert Palmer, the whole group wore jackets and ties, so they stood out as a bit more polished than most.  Archy Marshall is all of 19 years old and he looks like a tall, lanky, red headed puppy.  But then he starts to play and … (0 comments)

nyc music scene: Starting a Conversation about Good Music - 11/13/13 08:51 AM
Since I was young, I’ve had an affinity for rock music (also blues, folk and jazz at times), and I enjoy going to small venues to find new and upcoming artists. I find it fascinating to watch people grow into their music and develop their style as they gain experience.
There is definitely an underground “vibe” around the NYC area music scene. I don’t subscribe to XM radio or receive music magazines, and sometimes I’m not even sure how I find out about a club or an artist. By going to see shows in and around NYC, you hear things. … (3 comments)
