Last week I was in my hometown on Hilo in the Big Island of Hawaii. I am recuperating from a bout with cancer and going home was the perfect place to rest, visit friends and family and attend the yearly hula competition.
Hilo is the location for the Merrie Monarch, a hula competition with people and hula groups from all over the world in attendance or participating. Established 49 years ago, hula troupes converge onto the Big Island annually. Seating is limited and tickets are difficult to obtain. When life gives you lemons, go home and pick guavas. I was born and raised in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. After many wonderful years in Phoenix Arizona, late 2011 I was diagnosed with phase3 of the big C. Getting a big C diagnosis can be considered the end, but not for this tough wahine from Hilo. I’ve come home to to Hilo rest, recharge, rejuvenate, and clarify my vision. My outlook has changed. I sold 71 homes just shy of 18 million sales in 2011.

After a late Christmas eve, we woke early this morning to watch my young cousins open their Christmas presents. My cousin Charlotte prepared a filling breakfast, and our our entire family attended church services in Honokaa Hawaii. A young parishioner was baptized and confirmed, with his entire family in attendance. Over 50 of my family and friends partook in our Christmas lunch. A year ago I wrote a blog on ActiveRain about My Aunty Margaret's Taro Farm in Waipio Valley Hawaii. I frequently receive peculiar telephone calls. Callers ask for sushi in Surprise, Coco’s Restaurant, Sun City Grand garage sale items and now it's taro; all were topics in my ActiveRain blogs.
My Aunty Margaret grows taro on her farm in Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. Taro is primarily used for making poi, a starchy staple served at Hawaiian luaus. It’s also used in making taro chips, a sweet chip with similar crisp to a potato chip.

When selecting the plants for the front of my Sun City Grand home in Surprise AZ, my landscaper discouraged me in planting a Sago Palm saying that it struggles in the intense summer heat. At the time, a 5 gallon Sago Palm sold for about $70 at nearby nurseries.
After I was in my home for a few months, I found a small Sago Palm in the closeout section of Albertson's Supermarket in Surprise for around $5. Of all places to find selling a tiny Sago Palm, a large chain supermarket. My husband planted the little palm, adding it to the watering system. Sun City Grand residents, family, guests and the City of Surprise celebrated Oktoberfest in a "Grand" style yesterday! Each year residents celebrate the end of the hot summer while welcoming back the winter visitors. The weather was perfect, and the event was highly successful!
Sun City Grand Dancers performed with various dancing with residents participating in line dancing, West Coast Swing, Square Dancing, Arizona Two-Step and Waltzes.
Artisans sold their works. The show favorites appeared to be woodworking and jewelry.
