family fun: Birthday Gift - I'm not Even Kidding.... - 09/18/11 03:02 PM
I am not even kidding. My brother got me this. He got me a Fly Bar. I've never heard of this. It's an oversized Pogo stick. I'm the adventure type. Climb mountains regularly....love to hang glide one day. Done Sky Diving and Ballooning, but never heard of this til I got this yesterday. For some odd reason, he thinks that this is what a father of 5 needs. I love my brother!!!!! It's a lot of fun! … (10 comments)

family fun: A Saturday in the Life of Larry.... - 08/27/11 03:35 PM
Crazy day today.  But, in many ways a very successful Saturday, but a very unique one.
Went to post office to send a care package to a friend battling pancreatic cancer; Rushed home to get coach our first football game at Saint Patrick's School.  Saint Pat's has been around for over 70 years and has never had a football team.  Today, as an expansion team, we were very decisive........in our 36-0 loss;  YIKES! Did a Saturday closing with family friends; Signed my 6 and 8 year old up as teammates for our church's "bag's tournament tomorrow, and did the same with my … (7 comments)

family fun: Speechless Sundays - The Bettag Family Hike - 08/21/11 03:26 AM

With 3 of the 5 Bettag kids in the picture, here's another picture of our family hike to Lake Isabelle in Roosevelt National Park, just south of Rocky Mountain National Park.  The 4.2 mile round trip hike was a blast....even for my little one, Tessa, who just turned four.  In fact, she did the entire hike by herself.  I didn't have to carry her at all.  It was a blast.  She passed out as soon as we hit the car, but it was one of the most beautiful lakes we've ever seen!

family fun: Speechless Sundays - Colorado Hiking - 08/07/11 04:39 AM

So we did a lot of hiking.  Even my 4 year old did a lot of 4 mile hikes at 10,000 feet.  We had a blast all week.  Tessa, my four year old got worn out by the end of the week.  We take a day or two off each week in Colorado just to let the kids rest their tired little bodies.  They work out with nature, but they sleep....really, really well.  It's no wonder that they cry when it's time to come home.  I felt the same way!

family fun: Wordless Wednesdays - Dad's Face Says it All - 04/13/11 03:52 PM
s
I'm not really sure who is more fake here me or Grant?  Grant doesn't want to take the picture because he wants to be playing, not posing with dad.  Dad, however, is lying with this smile.  Sure, I love my dude, but let's be really....A full day of events, finishing and ending with Chuck - E - Cheese!  Yeah baby!  I'd rather have my tonsils out!  In all seriousness, I love my bud.  I don't mind the 1 or 2 times per year Chuck - E - Cheese.  Grant's pleased and I'm good for a while.....

family fun: 1 Week after Dodd-Frank, I'm...... - 04/09/11 09:40 AM
Today....I've worked, worked and worked.  I wanted to make sure that I got my work done as the temperature was to climb from a balmy 41 to today's temp of somewhere in the 70s with the 80s hitting us tomorrow.
We did all of our outside work this morning; We did all of our homework this morning; I did office work early this afternoon, and tonight, I'll probably relax and take it easy a bit.... Just so amazing.  Winter has left and Summer seems to have arrived a bit early.  I hope not too early as I can't stand the hot … (7 comments)

family fun: Speechless Sundays - MY FAVORITE ONE YET! ICE COLD FANS! - 02/06/11 04:01 AM

In anticipation of the Packers and Steeler's game, four of my oldest children, decided that we'd toughen up just like the Packers.  We finally got our steam room cranking right before the big blizzard.  We'd get the temperature from room temperature to over 100 degrees....then we'd run out of our walkout basement and jump in the snow.
The funny thing was that mom had her camera all ready, but the first two times it didn't click.  We were all so pissed.  So we ran back into the steam room and warmed up and then stayed until we were broiling.  Needless … (16 comments)

family fun: Wordless Wednesdays - This Weekend's Winter Walleye Fish Fry - 01/12/11 03:32 AM

This was truly one of the best nights of my life with my son....ever.  It was cold, about 22 degrees outside.  Every Sunday we rotate and each kid gets to cook with dad.  They pick the menu and we shop for the food together and prep it together.  Then we cook it together.  Brett wanted to do a Walleye Fish Fry with potatoes, onions and bacon.  He got the wood and we set up camp.  One of the best times ever.  My wife said that this was the best meal that she had ever had in her entire life.  Man, … (13 comments)

family fun: Speechless Sundays - Party Central - 01/09/11 03:36 AM

Yes....in just a few hours the Packers will be lining up to beat the Philadelphia Eagles.  We just got back from church this morning and my youngest, Tessa, got these glasses that were in my Christmas gifts to me and put them on.  All I could think of was "boy is she getting primed for the Packer win today."  Good enough for her, then good enough for me.  Can you say

family fun: Wordless Wednesday - A Late Thanksgiving Thanks in This Season Of Joy! - 12/15/10 02:18 AM

OK....for the record, I've lost 23 pounds since this picture.  It's just after the morning mass that we go to in order to give thanks and to do some sort of help to the poor.  Needless to say, I'm thrilled for a couple of reasons.  First, and foremost for the best family one guy could ever ask for.  Heck, in this picture, I look like a Mormon and not a Catholic.  Seriously though...the second reason is for the weight loss.  I want to be around for a long time.  Thanks to you God!  Awesome family you've given me and I … (10 comments)

family fun: It Really Is a Wonderful Life, Isn't it? - 12/12/10 03:30 PM
No, this isn't my backyard today. The environment in this picture is a lot warmer than my backyard right now.  Even my dog, who "lives for winter" has had enough.  I have so much to do, but I figured that I'd make tonight a night all about the family!
Even though it is to get to well below    -20F degrees Fahrenheit tonight with the windchill, my daughter and I cooked some "Juicy Lucy" burgers on the grill tonight along with some home made french fries baked with an Olive Oil brush and a salt rub.
We finished up the night with me … (7 comments)

family fun: Wordless Wednesdays - Clowning Around - 12/08/10 01:37 AM

So my boy does this whole circus theme at school.  Every year each kindergarten class does the circus.  Needless to say, this year, Grant was the clown.  Grant's the fourth out of our 5 and, by far, the least shy of the crew.  He lit the room up and was one of the stars of the show.  I'm not saying that because I'm the parent.  I'm saying that because he was.  The other three barely wanted to be seen, but not G.  He was all over it....and loved every minute of it!  So did Mom and dad!

family fun: Speechless Sundays - Really, It's not What it Seems - 08/15/10 07:32 AM

OK.....she'd been begging for a sip the entire time.  My dad used to let us have a sip when we were pre-K, but once we got older....No way.  Tess had been begging for a sip.  I decided to let her have the whole darn thing.....when I got done with my beer.  It didn't matter that it was empty.  It was hers and she was pretty dang proud.  When I brought out the cigars.....well....that's another whole story!

family fun: Hysterical....If you came from a big family!!!! - 08/12/10 03:19 AM
Off Topic? You Bet! Funny, no, hysterical yes. If you came from a big family, then you will know the drill here. I have a dry sense of humor and it takes a lot for me to laugh. Having said that, this video should crack you up. For those of you that want to get straight to the point (like me), take the time to watch this. It's worth the six minutes. You'll crack up. I know that I did. … (7 comments)

family fun: I Was Being Judged by the Way I looked!!!! And it was fun for a few days!!!! - 07/20/10 02:38 AM

I always try to dress professionally in my nine to five job.  Actually, my job is more 7:30 til 9:00 pm.  I carry myself in a professional manner and am rarely walking the streets of my local community naked.
Most of the time, I wear working casual clothes, but never anything really atrocious unless I'm up on my farm in Wisconsin.  Needless to say, since I live in the community that I work in, I try to be transparent, but always professional.  Even when I dress down, I still carry myself as a servant in the community as best I can.

family fun: Speechless Sundays - Family Mohawks!!!!! - 07/11/10 04:21 PM

This was my favorite year during the 4th EVER!  We love letting our hair down and getting away.  This year, however, my kids begged me to get a mohawk with them.  I argued against it, but I have to tell you I wanted one.  When they told me that I wouldn't see anyone I knew because we were going out of town, I was all in.  For the first time in my life, I was sporting a pretty cool Mohawk!  I started grabbing the persona as well!  You should've seen me with my mirror polaroid lenses.  I was one bad … (27 comments)

family fun: Fun Week Ahead - - - Family Time Starting with the Packers - 11/20/09 01:17 AM
Leaving in just a bit.  Have a lot to do and I'm picking up the kids after school.  We're heading to the farm up in Wisconsin this afternoon.  A friend of mine gave me tickets to the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers Game for this Sunday up in Green Bay.  I'm taking my wife and two oldest boys up to the game.
It'll be a lot of fun.  I love going to a place where I get absolutely zero cell phone reception and I can just be dad and husband.  This will be a great way to start the Thanksgiving … (8 comments)

family fun: Halloween....the Aftermath!!!!! - 11/02/09 01:31 PM

Not too often I can go ahead and brag about looking worse than the kids who dress up for Halloween.  However, this Halloween consisted of a lot of fun for the entire family.  On Friday we had the first annual Chili Cook Off.  It was awesome.  We had 10 different types of Chili.  I've never made chili before, but I did make it this night.  Let's say that I didn't make the top 3.
The next day was Halloween.  It was awesome.  Here I am with my oldest son.  He looks really old here.  I'm really not sure who looks … (13 comments)

family fun: A Vacation to Recharge!!!! - 07/09/09 02:11 AM
You want a story????  I have  a story for you.
Last week a I took my first full week off in over two years.  I left my wife home with our soon to be 2 year old.  I took the other 5 kids with me to the farm in Wisconsin.  It was a blast.  If you've ever read the book, Wild At Heart, by John Eldridge, you'd understand how important it is for a dad to be involved intimately in the lives of his kids.  I told the kids that this was going to be a fun adventure.
One half way … (7 comments)

GIRLS KIDS GONE WILD!
SPRING BREAK 2009!!!!
Wow...what a wild week last week!  Spring Break was came and went....and I'm exhausted!  I gave my wife 1/2 a week off (she stayed at home with our one and one half year old).  We were all to go on vacation.  My wife, my niece and my 5 kids.  I ended up taking the niece and the older 4 up with me to my farm in Wisconsin a day b/4 my wife was supposed to meet us.  I found that I got more quality time with my kids by leaving early and leaving my … (12 comments)
