Have you ever walked or ridden along the bike path that runs from Algiers to Gretna? It's a great ride, with a spectacular view of the city and the skyline serving as a backdrop to your exercise program. Plenty of people would love to be able to continue their ride into lower Algiers, but haven't been able to do so. That's all changing.
Bids will be taken shortly for the planned extension of the bike and walking path in Algiers. With construction expected to begin this spring and be completed before the end of 2012, the path that currently runs (2 comments)

algiers: New Orleans West Bank Real Estate | Home Sales and Market Trends 1993 to 2010
- 02/07/11 06:11 AM
Up until the crazy post Katrina market of 2006, we really considered ourselves insulated from the real estate woes that so much of the rest of the U.S. was experiencing. Slow, steady growth was the norm. None of that pie in the sky appreciation, just a "normal" market. 2006 turned us on our ear on the West Bank of New Orleans. With no levee breaks and minimal storm damage, home buyers flocked to the area as they returned to the city. We barely had to stick a sign in the ground and a house, no matter how out of date or (4 comments)

algiers: Home Prices Up on the West Bank of New Orleans?
- 12/15/09 02:38 AM
Yes, according to an article in City Business. Don’t get too excited. One thing that being a data geek has taught me is that you can make numbers say almost anything you want them to.
According to the article, there was an increase of 20.1% in home sale prices in Algiers from October to November and an increase of 5.4% on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish. Sounds like great news. But, I have a couple of problems with this report. Agents notoriously don’t change the status in the MLS timely, so the actual average sale price has (22 comments)

Next week the kids are out of school and the grocery stores will be packed with folks hunting and gathering all of the things they need to prepare too much food for too few people. For many, it's a stressful time, trying to do everything just so. I don't know about you, but I usually need a break from all of the preparations and look forward to some time out of the house just to have a little fun. What could be more fun than Turkey Bingo? The Sunshine Club of Algiers is sponsoring it's annual Turkey Bingo on Tuesday, (3 comments)

What is the Federal City? Scheduled to open on the existing Naval Support Activity in Algiers, the City is expected to house multiple military offices, with 2,000 Marine personnel to be transferred to the installation and the eventual addition of other federal, state and local offices. The plan was developed when the NSA facility was slated for closure as part of BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure). I'm actually already seeing the results of BRAC in other states (8 comments)

algiers: Algiers Youth on a Mission
- 07/19/08 04:08 AM
The Aurora Methodist Church in Algiers has been hosting volunteer mission groups since right after Hurricane Katrina. Hundreds of adults and youth have made the church their home for a few nights or even a few weeks while they have helped in the clean up and recovery efforts of the city. Today, the youth and counselors of Aurora Methodist packed up and headed out to Atlanta for their own mission trip to assist in cleaning, painting and repairing two homes for elderly Georgia residents. This is how you change the world...
