new orleans: View From a Mardi Gras Float - 01/30/13 04:10 AM
Last weekend, we rode through Uptown New Orleans with the Krewe of Choctaw parade. What an exciting ride it was!
I just knew that I was going to be able to take lots of photos and video along the route to share with my friends and family. That didn't work out quite as well as expected, since the crowd never thinned enough to give me a chance to stop throwing. Since we had an awful lot of stuff to throw, it was definitely my work out for the day...

new orleans: Oak Cove Subdivision, Marrero LA - 10/30/12 07:49 AM
If you are looking for affordable real estate on the West Bank of New Orleans, Oak Cove should be on your list of neighborhoods to check out.
Developed in the mid to late 1970s, it offers a variety of ranch floor plans, many of which have been modified by the owners over the years. The neighborhood and landscaping have both matured, so it’s no longer a cookie cutter subdivision, but has taken on the unique characteristics of the various home owners.

Located off of Barataria Blvd, south of Lapalco, Oak Cove has some of the most affordable real estate on the West Bank, with … (2 comments)

new orleans: Buying New Orleans Real Estate Sight Unseen - 10/10/12 04:55 AM

We get a lot of requests for information from people who would like to live in New Orleans. Sometimes, they are out of town and want to find the right place to use when they visit - a second or vacation home, if you will.
Occasionally, we find that one of those buyers wants to purchase a property sight unseen because they believe it's a bargain.
Here's why I think it's worthwhile to spend the money to come to town and see these homes for yourself.
It may be right next door to a blighted property. While the price may, … (2 comments)

new orleans: Cochon in New Orleans Named to Top 100 Foodie Destinations in U.S. - 10/03/12 02:55 AM

Do you have a secret desire to load up on pork? Do you love good, filling, southern food with a cajun influence? Then you definitely need to check out Cochon, recently named as one of the Top 100 Foodie destinations in the U.S. by Open Table.
Cochon prides itself on locally or regionally sourcing as many of their ingredients as possible. The only local restaurant to make the 2012 cut (what were they thinking??), Cochon is located in the Warehouse District at 930 Tchoupitoulas Street in New Orleans.
Never one to resist the draw of a foodie award, I took an … (4 comments)

new orleans: Eating, Drinking, Driving...The New Orleans Way - 09/12/12 11:47 PM
Years ago, a group of my friends decided it would be a fantastic idea to ride our bikes from the Canal St. ferry all the way to the lake. In theory, it was a good, fun plan.
The execution was a little lacking, since we made our own happy hour when we got to the Lakefront and had to call cabs to bring us and our wheels home.
We should have left it to the professionals.
The guys at Confederacy of Cruisers have one of the most highly rated tours of New Orleans - and it's all done on bicycles. There's … (3 comments)

new orleans: Why Is the Porch Ceiling Blue? - 08/24/12 11:48 PM

Have you noticed that many New Orleans porch ceilings are painted blue?
There are several reasons why an owner might choose blue:
Some just like the feeling of extending the blue sky onto their porch Some believe that birds and wasps won't build nests because blue tricks them into believing the ceiling is the sky Some subscribe to the old African belief that blue ceilings and doors keep ghosts away No matter what you believe, I love seeing the old traditions kept alive.

new orleans: Find the Bead Dogs Before They Are Gone! - 08/12/12 08:10 AM

Summer is winding down and it won't be long before the bead dogs are auctioned off and won't be gracing the streets of New Orleans any longer.
I ran across this one today out in Lakeview in front of the Velvet Cactus restaurant on Harrison. The camera doesn't do it justice. In the sun, it was sparkling and shining as the rays reflected off of the glass mosaic pieces that decorate this original work of art.
I hope you have a chance to see some of these unique pieces before the auction benefiting the SPCA. It's for a great cause, … (4 comments)

new orleans: It Smells Like Old People In Here - 07/04/12 07:30 AM
Real estate agents can be brutal in their assessment of homes for sale.  There's no better way for your agent to find out what others think of your listing (or its competition) than to hang out at a broker's open house and keep their ears open.
While out touring New Orleans listings this week, I managed to overhear the following (ok, so maybe I totally said one of these, but I'm not 'fessing up to which one):
It smells like old people in here...
They were right.  It did.  But it just as easily could have been cats, dogs or smoke that caused the negative … (40 comments)

new orleans: Beware This New Orleans Home Owner Scam - 05/16/12 09:11 AM
If there's one thing you can say about scam artists, it's that they are nothing if not creative and persistent.
We received an email from one of our clients that purchased a West Bank home last year.  She's been getting repeated notices that she should request a copy of her deed and property profile and decided to ask us if this was something she was supposed to do.
Thank goodness she did, because this is nothing more than a scam targeting new home owners that might not know any better.  If you just glanced at this, you might assume that it's … (3 comments)

new orleans: New Orleans Homestead Exemptions No Longer Need Renewal - 05/15/12 06:49 AM
I must have been asleep when the Louisiana Legislature passed La. R.S. 47:1703:1 last year, but I certainly became aware of it when I received the nicest letter from the Orleans Parish Assessor's Office.
Dear Homeowner, Our records indicate that you have successfully applied for and received a 2012 Homestead Exemption.  This letter is to notify you that this Exemption is now permanent as long as your current address remains your home in Orleans Parish....
No more filling out those little cards annually and making sure they are mailed or returned to the Assessor in a timely manner.  This should … (2 comments)

new orleans: 2012 French Quarter Festival Was the Biggest Yet - 04/16/12 04:57 AM
In the Times-Picayune, they are reporting that the crowds at this years French Quarter Festival were the biggest ever.  The festival has grown from a small, local event that took place on one day to the current 4 day extravaganza that stretches along the riverfront and spills into the streets of the Quarter.

I had a chance to get out there on Thursday and Friday and I'm so glad I took the time to grab my camera before heading out the door...

new orleans: Paws on Parade: Finding the Bead Dogs Across New Orleans - 04/16/12 03:44 AM
Have you seen the bead dogs scattered throughout New Orleans and Metairie? Finding them is like embarking on an artistic treasure hunt all over the city.

The official name is Paws on Parade and the project is designed to raise awareness of animal needs and welfare in the area.  At the end of the parade (in September) many of the sculptures will be auctioned off to raise funds for LA SPCA.
From the SPCA website:
What is a Mardi Gras Bead Dog®? A tradition among generations of New Orleanians, children create Bead Dogs from discarded Mardi Gras throws. A few twists … (0 comments)

new orleans: But My Agent Is Busy Today - 03/23/12 04:04 AM
Because we have one of the best home searches in New Orleans, we are contacted by a lot of people who have questions about a home for sale they have found on the internet.
Typically, those questions are about additional pictures or information on a home owner association or just to ask about a neighborhood. If someone wants to schedule an appointment, we get pretty excited, because showing and selling?  That's what we do.
We'll ask a few questions to be sure that the property is a good fit for the persons wants and needs and budget and, because we don't believe in … (6 comments)

new orleans: New Orleans West Bank Real Estate Market Trends | February 2012 - 03/15/12 03:10 AM
Homes Sales on the West Bank of New Orleans We are taking a quick glance at home sales so far this year in each of the West Bank zip codes and the news is a mixed bag.

When comparing January and February sales from 2011 to 2012, the number of homes being transferred each month dropped in Algiers, Gretna and Marrero. Unincorporated Gretna (including Terrytown) and Harvey both had healthy increases in activity.
Foreclosure sales have decreased in Algiers and Belle Chasse, while increasing in the rest of the West Bank communities. This doesn't mean that the number of actual … (3 comments)

new orleans: New Orleans Moving Tips: Where To Donate or Recyle When Packing for Your Move - 03/01/12 06:48 AM
One of the most common complaints I hear when people have to start the packing process before moving is "I have so much STUFF".   I think that we all have a tendency to accumulate things/stuff/junk in our homes.
If you are one of those people that never keeps something just in case, then this is not for you.
For the rest of us, getting rid of things can be a chore. Fortunately, there are a couple of really easy ways to dispose of items you no longer want, and certainly don't want to move, that could be useful to … (1 comments)
