estes park: Peak to Peak Highway starts in Estes Park! - 10/13/10 04:51 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
Peak to Peak Highway, aka HWY 7, originates in Estes Park and is one of the most scenic drives between Denver and the "High Country" for viewing aspen leaves. Our aspen gawking season is an extra three weeks long this year, so you still have the opportunity to hop in the car and enjoy some spectacular golden leaves. To get to "Peak to Peak" Highway, head north from Denver or Boulder on HWY 36 to Lyons. Turn left at Lyons onto HWY 7...you will end up in Allenspark first, then Estes Park.

estes park: We're stuck in a Rut - 09/27/10 09:43 AM
Greetings from Estes Park...where getting stuck in a rut is a good thing! We are in the middle of the Elk Rut...when the bulls bugle and the females follow in herds. It really is a hauntingly beautiful sound and not at all what you would expect from such a majestic creature. The elk are enjoying the unseasonably warm Indian Summer weather as much as we are, this big guy in my backyard was pretty relaxed this morning...

estes park: Long's Peak through a smoky sky - 09/17/10 02:39 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
We are surrounded by a few forest fires at the moment, the firefighters have them well under control where there are homes, and the National Park is letting some that are remote forest areas in the Park to burn themselves out.
One of the results of the fires is a smoky haze that makes for interesting sunrise and sunset skies. Here's what Long's Peak looked like a few nights ago...

estes park: Concert under the stars in Estes Park, Colorado - 08/06/10 03:14 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
For the past few months I've been working on fundraising for the Estes Valley Workforce Downpayment Assistance Program. The last event that met the deadline for matching funds was my "Concert Under the Stars". The entire week before and after this evening we had been in our monsoon weather pattern that usually give us afternoon showers that can last well into the evening...makes for great rainbow conditions, but it was making me wake up in the middle of the night with visions of a soggy, empty amphitheater!
The clouds parted that day, and we had perfect weather … (2 comments)

estes park: Happy 4th of July from Estes Park! - 07/04/10 03:30 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
Our town is buzzing today, it marks the real start of our summer visitor season here in Estes Park at the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park!
There will be a free concert in Performance Park tonight at 7PM by the Village Band featuring patriotic music and marches, then, just down Elkhorn Avenue at about 9PM, there will be a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Estes. If you're in town, you won't want to miss either of these traditional events!

estes park: Estes Park is enjoying summer weather...at last! - 06/19/10 06:24 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
After a VERY late start to spring, we are finally enjoying summer weather here in the Rocky Mountains. The wildflowers are out, the bees are buzzing and the birds are singing!
Our property is adjacent to Cheley Camp, and we also have the pleasure of hearing the kids go by on the horse trail with their guides...singing trail songs, laughing and having a wonderful time. It's one of our favorite things about living where we do in Estes Park...it makes the occasional tough day selling real estate all worth while!

estes park: Aspen leaves pop in Estes Park! - 05/20/10 08:02 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
This is a momentous day in Estes...our aspen leaves are popping out all over town! (you know you live in the mountains when you get excited about that...)
Growing up in Nebraska, then relocating to Southern California, I didn't ever think much about the day the new leaves opened up. However, here at 7522 feet above sea level, our leaves are on the trees for a little over 100 days. That makes us REALLY appreciate them in all stages, from tiny little chartreuse tufts to "quaking" aspen leaves and finally to the gorgeous gold they turn to … (3 comments)

estes park: The snow is melting! - 05/17/10 05:01 AM
After a long week of snow, the sun came out yesterday for the second day of the 20th Annual Estes Park Jazz Fest. The turnout was wonderful...those are some serious jazz enthusiasts!
We are looking forward to spring weather this week, we were thinking perhaps to put the sun on the endangered species list! There are springs bubbling out everywhere, the creeks are up and the rivers are making that fantastic sound tumbling over rocks.
This is what my pine tree looked like this morning as the frost melted off just as the sun was coming up...I think spring may be … (6 comments)

estes park: Big Fat Spring Snow in Estes Park! - 05/12/10 11:25 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
We are in the middle of a big spring snow...about 14 inches at our house so far, and another band of the storm passing through until tomorrow morning. Not enough, to my three sons' dismay, to call a snow day...the roads were only slushy, not impassable as the storm warnings had predicted. Oh well, spring snow makes for great snowball fights after school, too...
Here's a shot of 6PM yesterday and 6AM this morning and its still snowing ;-)

estes park: Spooky Stanley Hotel in Estes Park - 04/22/10 08:18 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
We are having one of those spring weather patterns, that if it was a little bit colder, we would have 5 feet of snow on the ground. Fortunately, it's raining with those wispy clouds that hang on the mountainside.
The Stanley Hotel is always a great subject for a photo, but I especially love the way it looks when its gray and spooky outside. Stephen King drove up to Estes Park years ago just after Trail Ridge Road had closed and the Stanley was packing it up for the winter...that inspired his book "The Shining". The movie … (6 comments)

estes park: Estes Park High School Concert Band receives top marks in regional competition - 04/20/10 08:17 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
One of my favorite volunteer activities is to be a part of the "Band Boosters"...a group of parents that support the Estes Park High School instrumental music program. The kids are great, and they have a fantastic director, Mr. Chuck Varilek.
I had the opportunity to go with the band kids to a competition in Greeley, where they performed in a concert venue with judges, then had a sightreading portion, also a judged event. The sightreading judge was so impressed at how Mr. Varilek took the kids through 6 minutes of reviewing music together with no sounds … (0 comments)

estes park: Estes Park Mountain Lion - 04/15/10 10:35 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
I was at a trumpet rehearsal when we spotted this mountain lion in the next door neighbor's yard! They are magnificent animals...and here's a little advice if you happen to come across one of these big cats...
Stay calm if you come upon a lion. Talk calmly yet firmly to it. Move slowly. Stop or back away slowly. Do not run. Raise you arms to appear larger. If the lion behaves aggressively, throw stones, branches, or whatever you can get your hands on. Without crouching down or turning your back. Fight back if a lion attacks you. … (3 comments)

estes park: Estes Park Oratorio Society announces spring concert - 04/15/10 07:02 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
One of my favorite volunteer activities is creating the artwork for the Oratorio Society of Estes Park's posters and programs. (they let me have a trumpet part occasionally, too)
The Oratorio Society of Estes Park has announced its spring performance of Brahms' "German Requiem" on Saturday, May 1 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, May 2 at 3:00 PM at Mountain View Bible Fellowship Hall on HWY 7. There will be a reception following the Sunday afternoon performance. This concert is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Harlalee "Hal" Wilson.

estes park: An unfortunate symptom of Springtime in the Rockies... - 04/13/10 12:11 PM
Greetings from Estes Park!
Sometimes we feel a little spring challenged here in the mountains, but everyone is so anxious to get outside and get rid of the wintertime cabin fever, that we will take what we can get!
Once we all get outside, we need to watch out for one of our least favorite signs of spring...the wood tick. They aren't nearly as cute and charming as the chipmunks that come out of hiberation at about the same time in March. Ticks seem to be most active in May and diminish as the temperatures head upwards, but it is possible … (2 comments)

estes park: Estes Park Downpayment Assistance Program celebrates first recipients - 04/02/10 05:13 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
The Estes Valley Workforce Downpayment Assistance Program is pleased to announce it has helped the first local homebuyers purchase a home here in Estes Park, Colorado. The recipients grew up in town, attended school here and returned after college to work in local businesses. The concept for the program, co-sponsored by the Estes Valley Housing Authority and the Estes Park Board of REALTORS began nearly a year and a half ago after a symposium sponsored by the Housing Authority that demonstrated a need for downpayment assistance for a workforce with a median income from 81% to 160% … (0 comments)

estes park: Another lovely day in Estes Park, Colorado - 04/01/10 06:43 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
It is a picture postcard day here, the sun is shining, birds are singing and the kids had a wonderful time in Rocky Mountain National Park for their annual field trip!

Ha ha...it's snowing like crazy and the kids are taking CSAP tests. We WISH it looked like this today...not to worry, it will soon!

estes park: Estes Park Sweethearts - 02/25/10 02:06 AM
Greetings from Estes Park!
I thought I would share photos from our third annual "Valentine's Day Road Show" in Estes Park. Jon and Marsha Sypher co-sponsored this event with my company, The Yellow Mailbox Real Estate Services. They provided the barbershop quartet "Senior Moments" and I supplied cookies and handmade Valentine's cards from Estes Park Elementary School students. We stopped at Prospect Park Living Center, then the Estes Park Senior Center, and wrapped things up at the Good Samaritan Village. Everyone had a wonderful time!

estes park: Frost Giant races in Estes Park! - 01/30/10 02:38 AM
Sunday, January 31 is the date for the annual "Frost Giant" races in Estes Park. Here's what their website says..."THE FROST GIANT WILL BE HELD NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER OR REPORTED ROAD CLOSURES!! IN THE EVENT OF TRULY VICIOUS WEATHER (100 MPH WINDS AND -80 DEGREES F), ONLY THE 5K MAY BE RUN. PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL STAFF WILL BE ON-SITE." A bit tongue in cheek, perhaps, but our weather can be anywhere from below zero to fifty degrees this time of the year, you just never know!
