I am taking a pledge NOT to shop on Thanksgiving. Vote with your dollars and your conscience! For many years, my Mom, Vineda Hall England, worked in a nursing home. She often worked on holidays, and we understood that. Having to work on Thanksgiving or Christmas at a non-essential job is another thing ENTIRELY. I will not shop on these days, no matter what incentive the stores advertise. Let's just keep Thanksgiving for itself. Christmas can wait one more day. Nobody likes traffic detours or delays due to construction, but Cape Girardeau's city government does seem to be getting it right. Only one or two blocks can be closed at a time as Broadway gets its facelife, a project city leaders have dubbed "Building a Better Broadway." Contractors are about to finish, and OPEN, the first segment of the project a few days ahead of schedule. That means that the next segment will be underway, and closed, a few days early. We get to vote, everyone! And our votes will decide the route to be taken by a steam-powered excursion train this summer. One of the routes will come through Cape Girardeau, so I'm urging everyone to vote today. We are slightly ahead in the vote tally right now, so don't delay. Union Pacific's Great Excursion Adventure has four routes in the running.

I had to turn my car around and go back to take this photo when I passed Cedar Hills Subdivision this morning (Hwy 177 just at the north edge of the Cape Girardeau, MO, city limits). It sure looks like this flock is being led by the one "snow" looking goose! Actually, I believe that these geese are the locals who live at the subdivision's lakes.
Unlike the city flock at Capaha Park, these guys do not have shelter. With a major winter blast coming in tonight, I hope they find a place to hunker down! … (13 comments)

I wanted to be sure that they did not take flight and end up in the grill of my car, so I slowed down. At first, they were watching me while I was watching them graze in the expansive front lawn of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. I couldn't believe it when they alerted but did not run from me as I pulled my car into the lane and grabbed my camera. * It's raining today, and that must mean it is time for the fair! Just two weeks ago, the temperature outside made it nearly impossible to do much real estate business, but as August wound down and fair time drew closer, all of the locals just knew the temps would drop and the rain would come.
