real estate counter offers: When the buyer asks "How much did the owners pay for the house?"

When buyers ask "How much did the sellers pay for the house," they are usually trying to determine exactly how much the sellers have in the house, in hopes of gaining an insight into how to negotiate. MY response is usually going to be that the key issue is what they will TAKE for the house (not what they PAID), and that is reflected by the listing price. real estate counter offers: Rejected with no counter? They can't do that!

Rejected with no counter? They can't do that! Yes, they can because they own the house. Worse yet, the seller might not even answer, choosing instead to let the offer simply die. Why would a seller choose to reject with no counter or to simply let an offer die? Most often, it's because the seller does not consider the offer to be a serious offer. The offer was probably a fishing expedition. Examples of buyer "fishing" expeditions include: Offer low and hope the seller will "split the difference" Buyer tries to determine what the seller "will really take" Buyer's price (2 comments)
