security: Advertising To The Bad Guys - 12/26/16 08:15 AM

I recently read the latest Tom Clancy novel (okay, it's ACTUALLY written under his name since it's tough for dead authors to pen new books) and the premise of the book is "What if the bad guys used social media to target the good guys?".  In this particular case, ISIS is going after government officials, Special Forces military, etc., on OUR home turf, and using public information sources to find them.
Now while most of us have no reason to fear being targeted by terrorists, do you ever stop and think about how much information we tell total strangers about ourselves?

We work with both Warren County home buyers and sellers, so I have the perspective of both sides of the real estate coin.  I HATE to get a call from one of our sellers telling us the front door was left unlocked or that the lock box was left open.  For us, it's Real Estate 101.  Unless the showing instructions tell us differently, we leave the home locked up and the way we found it.

Friday afternoon I went to use my credit union debit/charge card.  Declined.  Reswiped.  Declined.  ????  Odd, I KNOW I have money in that account!  Paid cash for lunch, then pulled up my credit union's app on my smartphone, and quickly identified some charges in Waterbury, CT, which would be FINE if we LIVED in or VISITED Waterbury in the previous 24 hours, but we don't and we hadn't!  Someone in Waterbury enjoyed a trip to Sullivans Wine, two rounds of purchases at Shoprite and a trip to Home Depot before our credit union's fraud detection software … (56 comments)
