travel: Sometimes You Need A Guide! - 12/02/18 03:00 PM

I've always loved to travel, and while I've been fortunate to see many places, there are still many places I'd love to go.  There's just no substitute for seeing a place in person.
There is no substitute for that feeling the first time you walk through the trees and see the Grand Canyon open up in front of you.
You KNOW the Eiffel Tower is HUGE, and then you see it first hand.  And you THINK the Mona Lisa is a really big painting, but....
Recently my mother and I were on a one week cruise of the Western Mediterranean, with quick stops … (2 comments)

travel: Going Out Of Town For The Holidays? SHHHHHHH!!!! - 12/18/12 08:31 PM
Going Out Of Town For The Holidays? SHHHHHHH!!!! Once upon a time you didn't have to worry about the whole world knowing you were going to be out of town.  You told the boss at work, you told your immediate neighbors, then you packed up the Wagon Queen Family Truckster and headed to Walleyworld with no worries!  If there were bad guys out there, they'd have to figure it out the hard way, by driving up and down the neighborhood and looking for that pile of newspapers in the driveway!Well now, life is different.  Most of us are guilty of oversharing … (88 comments)

travel: Finding Favorite Places One Unique Restaurant at a Time! - 06/16/12 12:33 AM
Finding Favorite Places One Unique Restaurant at a Time! Some restaurants you know what you're going to get coast to coast.  Ruby this, Olive that, the menu, the decor, everything evokes consistency.  But the true gems aren't found in some mass produced, franchised conglomerate governed enterprise.  The diamonds are the mom and pop places doing what they do best.  The Triple D category as Guy calls them. They're often not much to look at, in fact you might be inclined to drive on by if you weren't feeling adventurous or someone hadn't tipped you off to the secret. We've traveled a decent … (50 comments)

travel: Paying It Forward: Maybe He Was A Panhandler, Maybe He Wasn't! - 10/16/11 03:12 AM
Paying It Forward:  Maybe He Was A Panhandler, Maybe He Wasn't! My day job had me on a little road trip this week, up to Allentown, PA.  Now getting there left me a few travel options, they do have their own airport, but from Cincinnati to there required connections and extra time, OR I could fly direct into Philly!  We lived in Philly back in 1986-88 as my ship, USS Garcia FF1040, underwent a "13 month" overhaul that turned out to be a lot longer!  With only a little over an hour drive from Philly to Allentown, and the opportunity to … (27 comments)

travel: Air Travel Isn't What It Used To Be! - 09/30/10 07:08 AM
I used to travel quite a bit for my engineering job.  Not Up in The Air kind of travel, but 60 to 70 weekdays on the road wasn't uncommon, but with technology changes (you can do a lot remotely with digital pictures and video!) and tighter budgets, travel is WAY down, less than 10 days total! It's NOT a bad thing getting to spend so much more time at home, although Delta probably misses my annual trips to Japan and the corporate dollars spent!  From Platinum Sky Miles Member, to Gold to Silver to hey...I'm just another flier to them!  Am … (9 comments)

travel: Tired of Chain Restaurants? - 06/29/10 04:30 AM
With summer vacations fast approaching, you may prefer the comfort of getting exactly what you expect on the road.  But, if you're like me, when I travel I hate to eat the same thing I can get back home.
Whether it's a Beef on Weck in Buffalo (Charlie the Butcher's!), lobster rolls in Maine (lots of places), Mexican in Salt Lake City (Red Iguana), breakfast in Old Mystic (Kitchen Little) get off the beaten path and avoid the Golden Arches!
One of my favorite sites to help with this is www.roadfood.com .  The site is full of reviews, maps and pictures to let you … (0 comments)
