Today was NOT a good day for others trying to earn my business.
I've got a basic premise:  If I can't trust you, I can't do business with you.
Example 1:  We have a water line leak at our home that needs a specialized repair because of its less than ideal location to access.  We located a plumbing company that per their website offered that specific skill set.  Long story short, the plumber that showed up didn't know a thing about that type of repair and instead wanted to reroute the entire supply line to the house and through the basement.  And when … (20 comments)

Once upon a time reputations were communicated word of mouth. 
Needed a service?  You either leafed through the Yellow Pages or talked to friends and neighbors and their input helped you decide where to go.
If who they recommended lived up to the promised service, the business gained a customer for years and years..
My dad went to the same mechanic for years.
My dad and two brothers went to the same barbershop for years.  Matching buzzcuts on a Saturday morning and repeat as needed :)
That mechanic and barber were trusted.

There can be a lot of factors to consider when you choose your real estate agent.
Do you need a general real estate agent or a specialist?
Does the agent need to know a certain locality?
Do the agent need to know a certain housing type?
We could go down a long list of potential expertise qualifications.
And then of course there's personality.
Maybe you prefer a "fun" agent.
Maybe you prefer analytical.
Maybe you want an agent with similar beliefs as you.
And once you clear the expertise and personality hurdles, there's one more big hurdle to clear.
