moving to san francisco: Urban Gardening in San Francisco - 07/28/20 09:03 AM
Moving from a suburban house with plenty of room for gardening, to a condo in a high-rise with no private outdoor space can be a challenge for someone who enjoys a bit of gardening.
One of the first things we did when we had a San Francisco address, (two years before we moved in) was to put our name on the waiting list for a garden plot at the Fort Mason Community Garden. Time passes, in our case 7-1/2 years, and finally we were awarded a plot, which we've enjoyed now for about 4 years.
In our 5' x 20' plot we have: … (56 comments)

moving to san francisco: Architecture in San Francisco-Do You Have a Favorite? - 02/29/16 12:08 AM
San Francisco is known for its eclectic architecture styles in homes. In addition to grand Queen Anne Victorians, more simple Edwardian houses, and Italianate style Victorian homes like these pictured here, you'll find mid-century modern, and truly modern homes.
These four appear to be duplexes or TICs, all in the same half-block on a Pacific Heights neighborhood street.
If one of these was your house, which paint color would you choose?

moving to san francisco: The Many Moods of Lafayette Park, San Francisco - 02/13/16 08:50 AM
I think of Lafayette Park as the Crown Jewel of parks in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. Encompassing 4 city blocks, it is perched on a knoll bordered by Washington and Sacramento Streets on the north and south, and Gough and Laguna on the east and west.
This morning the mood of Lafayette Park was quiet and mysterious, with more fog slowly drifting by than I've seen in a long time. Adding to the mood was the sound of fog horns on the bay.

By afternoon, all had changed, with the fog giving way to sunshine, crystal blue skies, … (13 comments)

moving to san francisco: Living in San Francisco: "Do You Like Living There?" - 01/12/16 08:12 AM
Since I moved to San Francisco, I often hear, "Do you like living in San Francisco? We've always thought we might like to do that, too."
San Francisco, with its dynamic living and distinct neighborhoods is not far from San Carlos, where my office, Today Sotheby’s International Realty, is located. Many people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, in Alameda, Marin and Contra Costa counties, are expressing interest in urban living after spending happy, busy years in the suburbs.
Perhaps the car-centric life with a two-story home and large yard no longer has the appeal it once did. For some, the idea … (10 comments)

moving to san francisco: Living in San Francisco: Labyrinths - 01/12/16 07:17 AM
Recently I was chatting with people about what it's like to live in San Francisco, especially about moving here after living many years in a suburb.
Our conversation took many twists and turns, and one thing caught the fancy of several people: the labyrinths in San Francisco.
Labyrinths date back to Greek and Roman times, with the "Classical" design (no dead ends or branches) emerging as one we most often see today. The ones I know in San Francisco are set into pavement, or outlined with stones on packed earth. They provide a good focus for meditation and fostering a feeling of … (10 comments)

moving to san francisco: Season of the Witch - 1960s and 70s in San Francisco - 02/20/15 09:40 AM
There's something bewitching about San Francisco. From the time I was a young girl visiting with my parents, then being a teenager and exploring the City with friends, and later a young adult renting what really was a slum (I didn't care--I had a bay window!) the City has cast its spell on me.  I am not alone.
Since before the Gold Rush days of the 1850s, San Francisco has attracted both visionaries and malcontents, people with big dreams who were not afraid to take chances and people wanting to create a new and better life for themselves.
That hasn't … (16 comments)

moving to san francisco: Pacific Heights Sights: mansions, staircases, views and whimsey - 02/03/14 11:24 PM
Walking across Pacific Heights is one of the many delightful experiences in San Francisco. Where else, in a short 1.4 miles from Van Ness Avenue to Lyon Street, does one see:
Two beautiful parks, each covering 4 city blocks

Mansions of all descriptions: Victorians, Georgians, half-timbered, modern, classical

Foreign consulates: German, Russian, Italian, Norwegian among them

Mesmerizing views of San Francisco bay

Streets so steep they twist and turn their way down the hill--
or stop altogether and turn into staircases

and a bit of whimsy to bring a smile to one's face

Come find your … (25 comments)

moving to san francisco: Living in San Francisco: enjoying all the cultural activities - 08/28/13 03:22 PM
Living in San Francisco
Enjoying the Cultural Activities at our Doorstep
After spending many years settled in the same house in a nice Peninsula suburban town, in a house with a large (it's relative!) yard, my husband and I decided it was time for a change. The children were grown; our granddaughter was off at college; the yard was becoming a chore instead of a pleasure. I no longer enjoyed climbing on the roof to put up decorations or clean out gutters. In short--it was time for a change of lifestyle.
As lovers of outdoor activities, music of many types, … (4 comments)

moving to san francisco: Top 10 Things I Love About Living in San Francisco - 11/25/12 02:17 AM
Each day I realize anew how much I enjoy the urban lifestyle my husband and I are now leading since we moved to San Francisco in 2011. We've been here over 15 months, and it's hard to imagine living elsewhere. My life in the suburbs was great--same town for 40 years; same house for 35 years. Wonderful neighbors, great schools, youth soccer, a yard large enough to attract my children's friends. But, that was then and this is now. So, here are the Top 10 Things I Love About Living in San Francisco:
I no longer feel guilty about ignoring my yard … (12 comments)

When choosing a place to live, a lot of thought goes into deciding the lifestyle that is the best fit. We're now Living my San Francisco Dream, after 40 great years of living in San Carlos, where I continue to work.
