What does one do when the power goes out in San Francisco? Fortunately, today's massive outage (about 90,000 people without power at the peak of the outage) occurred on a beautiful, warm spring day. It was a day perfect for leaving the dark computer and heading out for a City walk.
Extra care had to be used crossing roads, like busy Van Ness Avenue and Columbus Street, but fortunately all drivers on the road at the time were being careful and observant.
My walk today took me across nearby Russian Hill, through Chinatown, into North Beach and up Telegraph Hill. My destination: tiny … (14 comments)

This weekend California, like much of the country, switches to daylight savings time. Soon, evening walks in San Francisco will have more daylight and the views will look quite different. I'll  be able to safely enjoy the many staircases on Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill in Pacific Heights. (My favorite staircases aren't lit as well as the sidewalks, so I avoid them once darkness falls.)

Hiking in San Francisco is always an adventure and delight, with unexpected sights and sounds. Today's walk was no exception. For me a good antidote to too much work, or too much holiday, is to step away from the computer, close the office door for a bit and get some fresh air.
Late this afternoon my husband and I did just that, heading up and over Russian Hill via charming Macondray Lane, through North Beach and up the northern slope of Telegraph Hill. Today our destination wasn't Coit Tower and Pioneer Park, but rather tiny Jack Early Park.

Why Living in the San Francisco area is so great - Reason #9--City Hikes!
Some people are surprised that as empty nesters my husband and I chose to move to San Francisco, especially when we both work on the Peninsula.After all, they reason, you like to hike. Well, that's perhaps one of the reasons we did move to San Francisco -- hiking in San Francisco is wonderful.
