The Dakota's exterior harkens to the North German Renaissance style of architecture, with its high gables, deep roofs, and a profusion of terra cotta spandrels and panels, dormers, niches, balustrades, and balconies. The layout and floor plan, however, have a strong French influence that was used in New York in the 1870's. Edward Clark, the head of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, commissioned the architectural firm of Henry Janeway Hardenbergh to design the Dakota, which took four years to build (1880-1884). Designed by Bottomley, Wagner, & White, River House was built in 1931. The sought after Sutton Place community was mostly tenements when River House was erected, and created an unusual dichotomy of lifestyles. The wealthy residents could be swimming in the building's pool (while the odor of the nearby slaughterhouses wafted through the air), and watch the poor residents of the tenements swimming in the East River. The tenements and slaughterhouses disappeared long ago, and Sutton Place is one of the most highly regarded communities in Manhattan. The twin towers of the San Remo has made it one of the most recognizable facades in Manhattan, and it has made guest appearances in more movies and TV programs than I'd care to count. Considered to be New York City's most beautiful apartment building, it has maintained its reputation as one of the most prestigious addresses in Manhattan. My crystal ball has a crack in it, and the image is fuzzy. At least that's how it feels when I sit down to figure out where the real estate market is headed. Every day we hear conflicting reports, and the prognosticators seem to change their minds regularly. The stock market roller coaster has not made it easy to determine where the economy is headed.
