Rockland County, NY Memorial Day Watchfires
Though Memorial Day this year is being celebrated on May 27, 2013, the traditional Memorial Day is actually Thursday May 30.  In Rockland County the annual Watchfires Vigil commemorating Memorial Day begins with a ceremony at 11:30PM on Wednesday night, May 29, 2013.  The fires will be lit at midnight and will be kept burning all through Thursday May 30.
 The watchfires in the county are being organized by the Vietnam Veterans of America chapter 333 and will be held at several locations

For those that were effected by Hurricane Irene, you'll be happy to know that as of September 19 the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is offering grants, for replacement of damaged appliances as a result of the hurricane. The grants are being awarded on a first come first serve basis for as long as the 8 million dollars allocated for the program lasts.

If you're one of those that have a well or septic system and were effected by any of the August flooding (Irene and otherwise), if your well or septic systems were in any way damaged as a result, you may be eligible for FEMA funds to repair the damage.
Included is assistance to pump septic tanks, or repair or replace the system as needed.  For wells, if your well is the sole source of water for your home then funds may be available to you to decontaminate or repair the well.

Yesterday our Office sponsored a Gold Party  - a fantastic fund raiser benefiting "People to People" of Rockalnd County! It's the only fundraiser I know of where you leave your wallet at home and walk out with money in your pocket and it 's a win-win for everyone involved. It's a fundraiser where everyone makes money.

There's a senior residential community that abuts the congregation I belong to.  The most senior member of this congregtion ( a women close to 90) was in mourning for the loss of her brother, her last remaining sibling.  This morning I paid her a condolence call.  Though I frequently make condolence calls, this one was different.
