coral gables community: Coral Gables' Famous Fairchild Garden Festival - 10/24/10 08:56 AM
This weekend was the 2nd Annual Edible Garden Festival at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden which was sponsored by Whole Foods (which is my favorite place to shop). There was a terrific Scarecrow Contest. Here are some of the scarecrows featured!

This Festival is a celebration of the delicious fruits, vegetables and herbs grown in our homes and community gardens throughout South Florida. As I blogged about in Organic Gardening in Palmetto Bay, our growing season is now upon us and we have many opportunities to buy local fruits and veggies as well through our … (2 comments)

coral gables community: Coral Gables First Friday is Art Walk Night! - 09/05/10 03:18 AM
There is a little known wonderful happening in Coral Gables the first Friday of every month. It's known as "First Friday Art Walk".
It's an art walk centered around Coral Gables downtown, with all the galleries between Miracle Mile and Ponce de Leon Rd. During First Friday Art Walk, galleries in the area are open to the public with the Coral Gables free trolly providing transportation. Most of the galleries offer cheese and wine, and oftentimes some of the artists are even on hand to talk about their work..

coral gables community: Florida’s Portability Exemption or “Moving Up” - 05/01/09 08:33 AM
An Explanation of Florida’s Property Tax Portability Exemption The other night some friends were wondering aloud how they could afford to move into a nice condo and sell their home in Pinecrest. They assumed that since they had lived in their home so long and their tax base was so low because of the Save Our Homes ammendment, that the taxes on a new purchase would make the new move just too expensive. So we started to talk about the Florida Portability Exemption. I don't think I explained it to well as I should have as I was rusty on the … (0 comments)

coral gables community: Coral Gables Fairchild Gardens Chocolate Festival - 01/25/09 09:05 AM
Fairchild Gardens in Coral Gables, Florida Today I went to Fairchild Gardens to see the annual Chocolate Festival. Yummm! There were people all over the place eating all kinds of chocolate foods... chocolate churros (Cuban version of a donut or funnel cake), chocolate fruits, chocolate candies. You can only imagine!
People were learning how to make chocolate, listening  to lectures on the history of chocolate, visiting the Chocolate Spa & exploring the rainforest to learn how chocolate grows and sample yummy chocolate delights. There were cooking demonstrations, tastings, plant sales and lectures all over the gardens. It was truly a lovely … (2 comments)

coral gables community: Pinecrest, Florida Farmer’s Market Opened Today - 01/11/09 04:17 AM
A truly wonderful winter tradition in Pinecrest is the Pinecrest Gardner’s Farmers Market located at 8287 SW 124 Street.  It has grown substantially through the years and now fills the entire parking lot of Gardner’s Market. I believe the Farmers Market is now organized by the Market Company, which is a  special events and farmers market production company. If this is so, it was a terrific addition. Open every Sunday through mid-April, a variety of venders sell vegetables, fruits, plants, orchids, oils, herbs, jams, salsas and baked goods. Bee Heaven Farm~Pikarco, occupies the west side of the parking lot selling only … (3 comments)
