marketing: What Are You Looking At? - 01/08/09 02:58 AM
When you were in high school and you heard that phrase yelled out, it usually meant someone was getting picked on, didn't it?  "What are you looking at!?"

When did you last get caught looking at someone or something with such obvious interest that everyone around you noticed you looking?  Was it someone dressed in a way you felt was totally inappropriate?  Was it an advertisement that was completely ridiculous?  What?

As you are planning your marketing for 2009, why not try to be the one that people are looking at?  How can you do that?

marketing: How Effective Was Your Niche Marketing This Year? - 01/01/09 10:13 AM
As those of you who know me and/or read my blogs know, I strenuously promote niche marketing.  As a fledgling Virtual Assistant back in 1995, I dabbled in just about everything.  I provided really, really general assistance to a large variety of clients.  For some unknown reason, I was never able to really get a good return on my marketing and advertising investments.  As a result, I really struggled in the beginning.
In 2001, I decided to focus solely on real estate professionals.  When I did that, my whole world changed (for the better)!  It was so much easier target my … (51 comments)

marketing: Different Strokes for Different Folks - 12/22/08 07:52 AM
I read a blog where someone really didn't "get" blogging - Why Blog by Mike Butson.  After someone made a comment on my post about not seeing any value for getting business on Twitter, I started thinking about how we feel about the marketing methods we choose to utilize to grow our respective businesses.
One thing I realized was that everything isn't for everybody.  Not everyone will "get" blogging.  Not everyone will get Facebook, or LinkedIn or Twitter.  Some will not get any form of online networking and marketing.
We all need to realize that there will be different strokes for different … (6 comments)

marketing: Social Media - It's Not For Blatant Advertising Folks! - 12/11/08 06:24 AM
So, I've been participating on several social networking sites lately such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, among others.  I've been noticing something that's really started to grate on my nerves - blatant advertising by virtual assistants.
And I don't mean the occasional "hey, I'm a VA and I provide lead management and listing coordination services." I'm talking the all-out ads: "Do you need a VA? Hire ME! I'm need more clients so Hire Me!"  And daily, several times during the day - the same thing.
Hey, I understand that people approach social media in different ways and I really need to get into … (22 comments)

marketing: Don't Make These Marketing Mistakes When Things Get Slow! - 11/13/08 08:56 AM
Don't Make These Marketing Mistakes When Things Get Slow!
Cut Back On Marketing - The first thing to go is anything that costs to market your business.  That goes for payng for drip marketing programs or anything sent out via snail mail!
Mistake!  It's when things are slow that you should revv up your marketing, not slow it down or stop it altogether.  Slow times are the perfect tme to invest in your business and complete task or set up new projects to keep your name visible.
Scale Back on Services for Listings - Some aents try to scale back on the … (11 comments)

marketing: Why Do You Charge So Much? - 09/02/08 08:58 AM
OR I Can Get An On-site Assistant for $10 Per Hour! What The Heck?
I have propects contacting me on a weekly basis...at least 3-4 per week.  Most of these "prospects" aren't really prospects.  You know what I mean - they are just like real estate "looky-loos;" those people who aren't really serious about making a move, they're just looking to see what's out there.  Well, as a Virtual Assistant my "looky-loos" are pretty much the same thing - tire kickers.  They aren't really ready to utilize a VA, they're just "gathering information."
One of the biggest stall factors I've found … (7 comments)

marketing: The Skinny from the Other Side - Paid Lead Generation Services - 08/14/08 03:59 AM
There are quite a few agents writing that paid lead generation services are the biggest taboo since wearing white after Labor Day.  As a Virtual Assistant, I guess I have a different perspective and I'd like to put it out there for the AR community.
Contrary to popular opinion here, I like several (not all) lead generation services available.  I don't think that they are all terrific, of course, but I do think that some of them are worthwhile.  You see, not every agent has the time, understanding, or knowledge to get their websites to the point where they are pulling in tons of … (3 comments)

marketing: What My Drama Queen Taught Me About Being a Business Owner - 08/13/08 06:21 AM
My daughter is 3.5 years old.  She'll be 4 in December and she is a Drama Queen.  In almost 4 short years, she has taught me more than I care to admit about being a professional.  I'd like to share some of them with you...
1.  When you're a Drama Queen, your job is to get the masses to WANT to cater to you.  As a business person, my job is to get my target audience to WANT to use my services.  This isn't always easy, as is prevalant in temper tantrums and rousing choruses of "Aww Man!!" but it can be … (11 comments)

marketing: Don't Be An ATM! - 08/12/08 12:39 AM
Do you remember when ATM machines first became popular?  No one wanted to use them because we thought other people could steal our money after we left. We always stood right there at the ATM machine and waited to be sure no one could come behind us and make an additional withdrawal or transaction. We were extremely suspicious of those things.  My dad wouldn't touch one with a 10-foot pole! During those days, the banks did everything they could to get us to use those blasted ATM machines.  They offered incentives for using the ATM machines rather than bothering a teller (making us feel as though it was an … (11 comments)

marketing: Bring STAGING To The World - One Local Community At A Time! - 08/11/08 01:43 PM
As I've said before, I learned about the wonderful world of staging when I joined Active Rain. Ever since then, I've been on a mission to tell as many of my clients and business associates as I can about the benefits of staging.  I wonder if you are taking advantage of a fantastic opportunity to do the same thing... Of course, I'm talking about Localism.com.  This, in my not-quite-so-humble opinion, is an excellent way for stagers to be visible - not only to those potential buyers but to sellers and agents as well. Why would you want to be visible to buyers? Because one … (5 comments)

marketing: Getting Agents To Splash - 08/11/08 06:30 AM
I bit the bullet and decided to sponsor my local community.  I've got a ton of ideas of ways to make the best use of that sponsorship.  I'll go into details on how I'm using my localism community later!
For now, I have a question for you.  I'd really like to get the real estate brokerages and lending institutions in our area to see what a great thing we have here, both in the Rain and on the Localism side, but I'm not sure of the best way to do that.  I'd love some suggestions on how to approach area realtors and … (9 comments)
