Madeline Island Residents Cheer "The Best Ice Road in Maybe a Decade"

Yesterday, I drove the "ice road" between Bayfield, Wisconsin and Madeline Island for the first time in just over a year.  And it was one of the smoothest, most pleasant ice road passages I've ever experienced.
We overheard a local resident in the Mission Hill Coffee House who proclaimed this year's ice road, "the best in maybe a decade".  I'd have to agree with him.
The ice is thick and smooth this year, without noticeable ruts or bumps.  We were told last week that there was a … (4 comments)

Bayfield Wisconsin Ice Caves are Open

According to information provided by some friends (and verified on the Web), the ice caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore are now open and accessible.
Park rangers have reportedly cored the ice between the caves and Meyers Beach, and have found the ice thick enough to accomodate tourist traffic.
The ice caves are awesome and beautiful!  You'll need a parking permit or 2009 seasonal pass in order to bring your vehicle into the Meyers Beach lot.  You can call the Visitor Center at (715) 779-3398 x399 to verify if the lot is open … (3 comments)

apostle islands national lakeshore: Vehicle Traffic to Ice Caves Suspended at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore - 03/26/08 04:27 PM
Due to deterioration of the shoreline approach resulting from warm weather, the Park Service has suspended vehicle traffic access to the Ice Caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
While there is no longer access to the ice caves by vehicle permitted, foot traffic is still allowed.  There is a $3.00 daily parking fee at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore parking area (Meyers Beach) for ice caves visitors.  Meyers Beach is located eighteen miles west of Bayfield, Wisconsin, off Highway 13.
Check out this article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel online, by Dennis McCann, about the ice caves at Myers Beach.

The book, first published in 1960 has now been republished by The Society Press and now may be found in Madeline Island tourist shops or ordered by mail.  Ross' book is perhaps the best available detailed history of Madeline Island, going back over three centuries in its scope.  There is extensive information about the early explorations of Brule and Grenolle, the diaries of Radisson and Grosseilliers … (1 comments)
