Madeline Island Ferry Line Adopts Policy Requiring Passenger Masks

Yesterday the Madeline Island Ferry Line posted a policy requiring passengers using the on-board passenger cabins "to wear a mask covering the mouth and nose".

The Ferry line meets the definition of a "common carrier" under Federal Maritime Law (see Federal Maritime Commission rules, 46 CFR, subsection 530.0). This rule which pertains to "a vessel operating on the high seas or the Great Lakes", gives the Ferry Line broad authority to make and enforce regulations on Lake Superior dealing with passenger safety and conduct while on board.

This is a proactive step towards protecting passengers from … (0 comments)

great lakes: Late Ice on Lake Superior Slowing the Start of our 2014 Tourist Season - 04/02/14 02:37 AM

Late Ice on Lake Superior Slowing the Start of our 2014 Tourist Season

The late ice cover on many parts of Lake Superior is slowing the start of our tourist season.  The ice road is gone now, and windsled travel is anything but easy.  So the "shoulder season" between ice road and ferry transportation is delaying the activities of many Madeline Island businesses, including our own.

We have new listings to bring to market, but there's little point in photographing a new listing covered in snow and ice.  The ice cover on Chequamegon Bay isn't exactly a tourist season … (1 comments)

great lakes: Get Ready For Next Spring & Summer With "The Great Lakes Berry Book" - 12/11/07 01:47 PM
Here's a fabulous gift idea for someone who enjoys berry picking and making preserves..The Great Lakes Berry Book (by Bob Krumm) is a complete guide to finding and enjoying wild berries found in the Great Lakes region.
This book is a must for berry-pickers!  It includes identifying photos to assist in finding a particular berry.
[NOTE: There's also a very useful section on what berries NOT to pick!]
My favorite berry in the book is, of course, the Thimbleberry, which is native to Madeline Island, the Michigan Upper Peninsula and a few areas in extreme northeastern Minnesota and bordering Ontario.  If you haven't … (4 comments)

great lakes: "On Thin Ice": A Book About the History and Use of Windsleds on Madeline Island - 11/12/07 03:41 PM

My friend Charles R. Nelson has written a book about the history of windsled transportation in winter between Madeline Island and Bayfield, Wisconsin.  His book, "On Thin Ice" is a fascinating look at the evolution of the windsled over many decades and the challenges Islanders have faced in the pursuit of safe winter transportation across the ice.
In the early to mid-1900s, moving passengers, food and medical supplies across two miles of Lake Superior ice was a hazardous enterprise.  A number of Island pioneers lost their lives dealing with the hazards of treacherous ice and open water.
Chuck's father, Elmer Nelson, is one of … (5 comments)

great lakes: Lighthouses of the Apostle Islands - 11/10/07 01:26 AM

Visit the Apostle Islands region of northwestern Wisconsin at almost any time of year and you'll become aware of the variety of well-preserved historic lighthouses on several of the islands.
All of the six Apostle Islands lighthouses are on the National Register of Historic Places.  The United States National Park Service currently maintains these lighthouses and tourists are welcome to visit.
When the lock at Sault Sainte Marie first opened in 1855, Great Lakes commercial shipping received a tremendous boost.  But along with the increased shipping traffic came risk.  The establishment of these lighthouses was an effort to reduce navigation … (8 comments)

great lakes: “When The Gales of November Come Early” – 32nd Anniversary of the Tragic Loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior - 11/09/07 03:33 PM

November 10 marks the thirty-second anniversary of the tragic loss of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior.
"Lake Superior is famous for violent weather" (excerpt from a National Park Service bulletin on sailing the Apostle Islands)
The Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Canadian waters, about 17 miles from Whitefish Bay, on November 10, 1975.  She departed Superior, Wisconsin the day before, on November ninth, with a full load of taconite (iron) ore.  The huge freighter was trailed by the Arthur M. Anderson, a smaller vessel traveling the same route towards the East end of Lake Superior.
"Superior, they say, … (0 comments)
