lake superior: EcoWood Offers Sustainably Harvested Wood Products on Madeline Island - 12/13/07 02:14 PM
EcoWood has become much more than the "Island sawmill".  It is a company dedicated to producing finished wood products, such as flooring, cabinetry, trim and decorative panels, in a sustainable manner.   The company adheres to an eco-friendly mode of operation that is unique in the Apostle Islands region of Lake Superior and northwestern Wisconsin.

EcoWood uses only bio-diesel fuel to power its vehicles, sawmills and other machinery.  All buildings and kilns are heated with scrap wood, burned in a high-efficiency boiler.  Only wood harvested sustainably is used.  EcoWood does not clear-cut any forested areas in the process of obtaining its … (7 comments)

lake superior: Flat On My Back Today With the 'Flu..Need Your Advice On Home Remedies! - 12/10/07 04:13 AM
I woke up this morning with a sore throat, fever and chills.  The last few days I've gotten a bit run down, driving back and forth between Minneapolis and Lake Superior (to Duluth, Minnesota and Ashland, Wisconsin), wrestling with the snow and outdoor temperatures hovering around zero.  Looks like I'm paying for it this morning!
So today I'll be reading and commenting from bed.  I don't plan to move around much, other than making occasional trips to the kitchen for hot tea or chicken soup.  I feel pretty crummy.
What do you do when you come down with a severe cold or the 'flu?  Does … (30 comments)

lake superior: Reduced Winter Schedule for Washington Island Ferry Line in Door County, Wisconsin - 11/17/07 03:56 PM

The Washington Island Ferry Line schedule is down to six daily trips each way, between Door County's Northport Pier and Detroit Harbor on Washington Island.  The ferry route crosses the channel which connects Green Bay with Lake Michigan north of Door County.
Unlike the Madeline Island Ferry Line in northwest Wisconsin, which shuts down once the Lake Superior ice between Bayfield and LaPointe becomes too thick, the Washington Island Ferry Line offers daily ferry service all year round, weather permitting.
As of December 3, the ferry schedule will be reduced to four trips per day each way, with no afternoon trips on … (0 comments)

lake superior: More Madeline Island History: "LaPointe, Village Outpost" by Hamilton Nelson Ross - 11/12/07 04:23 PM
Those searching for historical information about Madeline Island and the Apostle Islands won't exactly find a huge number of books on the subject that remain in print.  Fortunately, one exception is the book "La Pointe, Village Outpost" by Hamilton Nelson Ross.
The book, first published in 1960 has now been republished by The Society Press and now may be found in Madeline Island tourist shops or ordered by mail.  Ross' book is perhaps the best available detailed history of Madeline Island, going back over three centuries in its scope.  There is extensive information about the early explorations of Brule and Grenolle, the diaries of Radisson and Grosseilliers … (1 comments)

lake superior: "On Thin Ice": A Book About the History and Use of Windsleds on Madeline Island - 11/12/07 03:41 PM

My friend Charles R. Nelson has written a book about the history of windsled transportation in winter between Madeline Island and Bayfield, Wisconsin.  His book, "On Thin Ice" is a fascinating look at the evolution of the windsled over many decades and the challenges Islanders have faced in the pursuit of safe winter transportation across the ice.
In the early to mid-1900s, moving passengers, food and medical supplies across two miles of Lake Superior ice was a hazardous enterprise.  A number of Island pioneers lost their lives dealing with the hazards of treacherous ice and open water.
Chuck's father, Elmer Nelson, is one of … (5 comments)

lake superior: Apostle Islands Shipwrecks - A Magnet for Diving Enthusiasts - 11/11/07 11:22 AM
Since commercial shipping first began on the Great Lakes, there have been nearly 6,000 shipwrecks! The remnants of half of these shipwrecks have never been found.
The term "Great Lakes" is somewhat misleading.  The five Great Lakes constitute what is essentially an inland sea, representing America's north coast, a reservoir that contains nearly a fifth of the fresh water on our planet.
Cruising and navigating Lake Superior can be risky indeed.  The "Big Lake" takes pleasure boaters (and commercial captains alike) by surprise.  And Lake Superior is the site of many historic shipwrecks.  The Apostle Islands area offers divers a unique opportunity to … (2 comments)

lake superior: Bayfield County Back Roads – Mount Valhalla near Washburn, Wisconsin - 11/11/07 10:22 AM
I discovered Bayfield County Road C entirely by accident one day when I found myself in a hurry to get to an appointment near Herbster, Wisconsin.  Last week I went back and took a more leisurely trip across the Chequamegon Peninsula on County C and discovered some of the most beautiful country in this part of the State of Wisconsin.
County C connects Washburn, Wisconsin (via 8th Avenue) with the north-facing town of Cornucopia, on Lake Superior.  The trip takes about twenty minutes, but I'd encourage you to take a closer look and stop along the way.
Nearly midway across the peninsula, about … (0 comments)

lake superior: “When The Gales of November Come Early” – 32nd Anniversary of the Tragic Loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior - 11/09/07 03:33 PM

November 10 marks the thirty-second anniversary of the tragic loss of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior.
"Lake Superior is famous for violent weather" (excerpt from a National Park Service bulletin on sailing the Apostle Islands)
The Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Canadian waters, about 17 miles from Whitefish Bay, on November 10, 1975.  She departed Superior, Wisconsin the day before, on November ninth, with a full load of taconite (iron) ore.  The huge freighter was trailed by the Arthur M. Anderson, a smaller vessel traveling the same route towards the East end of Lake Superior.
"Superior, they say, … (0 comments)

lake superior: Lake Superior Water Level Drops at an Alarming Rate - 11/01/07 09:34 AM

Lake Superior's water level is dropping and it's causing alarm all over the Great Lakes region.  The largest of the Great Lakes is at an eighty-year record low water level, causing problems for boaters and especially for huge commercial ore freighters.
Major companies that rely on Great Lakes shipping to transport taconite ore, coal and grain through the lakes are responding by reducing loads, which threatens the future of the entire shipping industry.
Hydrologists attribute the water level reduction to a series of factors, including warmer water temperatures, less ice on the lake during winter and increased wind speeds.  Combined with other climatic … (29 comments)

lake superior: Washburn, Wisconsin is an Undiscovered Treasure! - 10/27/07 04:42 PM

Picture a bustling northern Wisconsin town with good schools, friendly neighbors and an unhurried pace of living.  Washburn is a little-known gem of a town on the south shore of Lake Superior and one of those out-of-the-way places that should not be missed.
Washburn Mayor Irene Blakely describes the town as "the nation's first eco-municipality".  The town has declared a commitment to issues of sustainability and halting the spread of global warming.
Some Washburn attractions that I highly recommend:
Mt. Valhalla Recreation Area is located on County Highway C, west of the town of Washburn.  The recreational area offers cross-country … (0 comments)

lake superior: Stagenorth in Washburn, Wisconsin presents "Gypsy" November 1-4 - 10/23/07 11:33 AM

Washburn's Stagenorth Community Theater is off to a roaring start since opening in July!  The theater will present "Gypsy", a show about the life and memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, from November 1-4 in Washburn, Wisconsin.
The beautiful new 150-seat theater allows for theater in an intimate setting, and the building features the Stage Door bar, with bar service, snacks and wireless Internet.  There's an outdoor patio for relaxing during summer months.
Artistic Director Jan Lee comes to Stagenorth with two decades of experience in acting, singing, writing, directing, designing and producing.  The theater was built to accomodate not only theatrical productions, but … (0 comments)

lake superior: Ten Years Later, Bayfield, Wisconsin is Still the "Best Little Town in the Midwest"! - 07/24/07 10:19 AM
Back in 1997, Alan Solomon, travel writer with the Chicago Tribune, declared Bayfield Wisconsin (on Lake Superior) to be the "Best Little Town in the Midwest".  And after a recent visit to Bayfield in the Summer of 2007, Solomon has written that Bayfield "is still as special today as it was in 1997".
Solomon notes a number of reasons for his high praise of Bayfield.  His 1997 article praised the fact that there are no traffic lights, no billboards or huge neon signs, no "chain" discount stores in the entire county.  Solomon refers to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, including Madeline Island, as "paradise".
Apostle Islands fans may … (0 comments)

lake superior: What did you do for a living BEFORE your real estate career? - 07/12/07 08:21 AM
I know some ActiveRain members have been in real estate all their adult lives.  But some of us made a career switch to this business.  Maybe you're among those who made the change to real estate from a former career.
Before I earned my real estate license, I was a professional symphony musician, college music instructor and conductor (yes, the person that waves a baton in front of an orchestra).  I began my career as a symphonic French horn player in the Israel Radio Orchestra back in the mid-1970's.  I was right out of Indiana University School of Music and it seemed fun and exciting to be invited to work overseas.

lake superior: Discover Beautiful Madeline Island on Lake Superior, Northwest Wisconsin - 07/10/07 05:08 PM
DISCOVER BEAUTIFUL MADELINE ISLAND ON LAKE SUPERIOR, NORTHWEST WISCONSIN
Madeline Island has been described as the "Nantucket of the north country".  The Island is a remarkably unspoiled, naturally-gated community in Lake Superior, about two miles away by car ferry from nearby Bayfield, Wisconsin.

The town of LaPointe is the ferry destination point on Madeline Island.  LaPointe is a quaint waterfront town with a rich history.  The Island has been home to Ojibway settlements, fur traders, voyageurs, missionaries and explorers.  The Madeline Island Historical Museum in LaPointe provides a look at the Island's fascinating past.
In town, you'll find shops, fine dining, moped and kayak rentals, a world-class marina with repair … (7 comments)
