Call it a Cabin if you prefer. But is it Really a "Cabin"?
Somewhere around here, in one of a couple of glass-front lawyer's bookcases, is a copy of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The book was published 170 years ago and inside the cover is a pen-and-ink etching of a small, rustic cabin.
The cabin depicted in this illustration is very small, very cozy and basic, with a small stone chimney and a wisp of smoke rising from the place, signaling that someone is home.

After a couple of very quiet months, we are seeing a revival in property showing activity on both Madeline Island and in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Things were very quiet in our Apostle Islands real estate market during January and February of 2016, but that hiatus seems to be coming to an end.

To our knowledge, Madeline Island Realty enjoys the only beachfront residential real estate office on Lake Superior. If that is true, it would be quite a distinction, as Lake Superior has over 2700 linear miles of shoreline. By the way, that shoreline circumference equals approximately ten per cent of the way around our planet, measured at the equator (about twenty-five thousand miles).

I remember quite well the day that our company, Madeline Island Realty, became the first real estate brokerage on Madeline Island to join a Multiple Listing Service (MLS). It was at the beginning of 2001 that I begain having discussions with the folks at Northwest Wisconsin Multiple Listing Service in Eau Claire, Wisconsin about becoming a member. At that time, nobody on Madeline Island or in nearby Bayfield, Wisconsin had an MLS membership or uploaded their property listings to a Multiple Listing Service.

I realize that we have more than one MLS in the Apostle Islands area (a few real estate brokerages belong to NorthstarMLS, others to SAAR and still others to Northwest Wisconsin MLS). Online services like ShowingTime or Book-a-Showing are rarely (if ever) used by real estate agents in this part of Wisconsin. Cellular phone reception is poor to nonexistent around here and signal coverage is spotty at best. It's true. Since January 1 of 2012, there have been seven successfully-closed luxury home sales on Madeline Island which sold at over $500,000.
