michigan: How SMS Text Messaging Kept me in Touch With a Real Estate Prospect - 08/13/09 02:03 AM
Yesterday evening, I received a cellphone call from a fellow who wanted information on one of our listings.  He was calling me from Madeline Island, using a Blackberry with Verizon service.
He was having obvious trouble getting a decent cellular phone signal in downtown LaPointe.  We were able to chat for about ten or fifteen seconds and then his phone would drop the call.
With his phone number displayed on my Caller ID, I figured it was worth a try to see if he could receive text messages.  And it worked!  We were able to exchange email addresses and I sent him the information he needed.

Visit the Apostle Islands region of northwestern Wisconsin at almost any time of year and you'll become aware of the variety of well-preserved historic lighthouses on several of the islands.
All of the six Apostle Islands lighthouses are on the National Register of Historic Places.  The United States National Park Service currently maintains these lighthouses and tourists are welcome to visit.

michigan: “When The Gales of November Come Early” – 32nd Anniversary of the Tragic Loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior - 11/09/07 03:33 PM

November 10 marks the thirty-second anniversary of the tragic loss of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior.
"Lake Superior is famous for violent weather" (excerpt from a National Park Service bulletin on sailing the Apostle Islands)
The Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Canadian waters, about 17 miles from Whitefish Bay, on November 10, 1975.  She departed Superior, Wisconsin the day before, on November ninth, with a full load of taconite (iron) ore.  The huge freighter was trailed by the Arthur M. Anderson, a smaller vessel traveling the same route towards the East end of Lake Superior.
"Superior, they say, … (0 comments)

michigan: Lake Superior Water Level Drops at an Alarming Rate - 11/01/07 09:34 AM

Lake Superior's water level is dropping and it's causing alarm all over the Great Lakes region.  The largest of the Great Lakes is at an eighty-year record low water level, causing problems for boaters and especially for huge commercial ore freighters.
Major companies that rely on Great Lakes shipping to transport taconite ore, coal and grain through the lakes are responding by reducing loads, which threatens the future of the entire shipping industry.
Hydrologists attribute the water level reduction to a series of factors, including warmer water temperatures, less ice on the lake during winter and increased wind speeds.  Combined with other climatic … (29 comments)

michigan: Northwest Wisconsin's Best-Kept Secret for Decades: The Barksdale Explosives Plant - 10/23/07 08:26 AM

The Chequamegon Bay area of northwestern Wisconsin has been the keeper of a secret over the better part of the past century.  Behind stone and iron gates and high fences along Highway 13, that well-kept secret was the Barksdale Works, an explosive plant owned and operated by DuPont and created to serve the wartime and industrial needs of the United States.
During the first decade of the 1900s, the DuPont corporation purchased nearly two thousand acres south of the industrial town of Washburn, Wisconsin.  Originally, this was the largest dynamite plant in the mid-United States. The Barksdale Works was situated almost midway between … (8 comments)
