The sudden growth in popularity of the Apostle Islands Sea Caves (now Ice Caves) has caused the attraction to go viral as a winter tourist must-see. The unusually thick ice on frozen Lake Superior has made it safe for tourists to trek on foot across the ice to tour the caves, which were carved from sandstone bluffs by centuries of wave action.
