The boardwalk at Picton Harbour is called The Glen Allan Public Boardwalk in honour of the S.S. Glen Allan, a freight steamer that worked out of the harbour. The S.S. Glen Allan used to load up with cheese and apples in Picton and other Prince Edward County harbours and transport them to the markets in Montreal. The Crystal Palace in Picton, Prince Edward County was finished in 1887. It is a scaled down replica of the 19 acre Crystal Palace that was built in London by Joseph Paxton in 1851. For a while it was all the rage to build structures like these in North America for agricultural fairs and similar buildings sprung up all across the continent. The one in Picton is the last remaining one in North America. Prince Edward County was designated as a "Globally Important Birding Area" in 1998 by The Canadian Nature Federation and Bird Studies Canada. Sandbanks Provincial Park is one of the biggest attractions in all of Prince Edward County. Every summer hundreds of thousands tourists flock to it. It's a great place to spend a hot summer's day and perhaps do a little bit of camping.
Sandbanks is the world's largest freshwater sandbank and dune system, perhaps that's the reason it's named Sandbanks, although I think Dune System Provincial park would have sounded pretty neat too. Last Year I was contacted by fellow Active Rain member Ty Lacroix from Envelope Real Estate in London, Ontario. Ty had a client who happened to own a beautiful 93 acre parcel of land in Prince Edward County, just south of Trenton and wanted it sold.
