trenton real estate: Look Out for the Early Riders in Quinte - 03/27/13 03:28 AM
It would seem that the weather is finally getting spring-like enough in the Quinte area for enthusiasts to break out their bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles. This is always a bit of a nerve-wracking time as drivers of cars aren't used to the presence of riders yet, and sometimes forget to check twice before changing lanes. The weather can also be a bit of a wild card, as it might be tempting to bring a bike to work only to find that it has snowed during an eight hour shift, and that the ride home won't be much fun.

trenton real estate: Goodbye to Zellers in Trenton - 03/26/13 05:33 AM
There are only a few days remaining until the Zellers store in Trenton closes for good. Everything has to go. Zellers are closing their doors across the country and some lucky communities will get a Target store in its place, but Trenton isn't one of those lucky communities. The store will just close. Naturally there are a lot of rumours about what will happen to the building, but I haven't heard anything that sounds remotely plausible yet. I suspect Trenton will have another empty store for a while. It's too bad because Zellers was a mainstay at the Trenton Town Centre … (4 comments)

trenton real estate: The Real Estate Market in Quinte Spring 2013 - 03/19/13 11:28 PM

If you are in the habit of reading the news, it would be hard not to notice that there is quite a bit of commentary about the real estate market in Canada these days. Articles similar to this Financial Post article seem to be popping up on a daily basis and most of them have a cautiously pessimistic slant to them. The concensus seems to be that the market is stagnant, and while the number of home sales are predicted to decrease, there will be no such drastic decline in the value of homes. Apparently we are due for a "correction" where … (9 comments)

trenton real estate: So, How's the Spring Real Estate Market in Quinte Shaping up? - 03/18/13 12:04 AM

I'm sure that many Canadians have been reading the articles in the media about the state of the Canadian real estate market lately. There seems to be a lot of alarm bells going off. People are worried about the value of what usually amounts to their biggest investment, their homes. Correspondingly there always seems to be a bit of a pushback from the real estate industry, telling folks that there's no cause for alarm and that everything is smooth sailing.
I'm not an expert at breaking down the whole Canadian market, but I do know a whole lot about the Quinte real estate … (6 comments)

trenton real estate: Four or Five Shades of Grey. - 02/28/13 01:36 AM
It looks like Old Man Winter is having one last kick at the can in the Quinte area. Well, I hope it's one last kick. It's not too bad though, it's fairly warm out, hovering around the freezing mark, so it's not blustery. The snow is wet and heavy though, and when the sun goes down it becomes a little treacherous on the roads. I saw at least a dozen cars on the side of the road between Belleville and Brighton last night. Many people simply don't adjust for the winter conditions.
This morning the roads were slushy and wet, and … (12 comments)

trenton real estate: The TSC Store in Belleville - 02/20/13 01:42 AM
I like to go shopping once in a while, especially hardware shopping. Even if I don't really need anything, I'll quite often stop at the TSC store in Belleville if I happen to be passing by. The TSC Stores are a chain, and they bill themselves as The incredible Country Hardware Store, and they are that indeed.
If you live in a larger urban centre, chances are you wouldn't come across a TSC store, the closest one to Toronto is in Uxbridge. They specialize in products for farmers, hunters and country people.
The TSC store in Belleville is the only place … (10 comments)

trenton real estate: Roblin Lake, Prince Edward County - 02/18/13 02:51 AM
Perhaps it would have made more sense if I had come here in the summer and taken some nice pictures, and maybe I will, but I also believe there is a certain beauty in winter. Perhaps it's because nobody else is around and I'm in a rather contemplative mood. Or maybe because I just happen to be driving by and had my camera handy. This is Roblin Lake, a small inland lake in Prince Edward County. It's very beautiful in the summer, there's a small beach here, and sometimes people come here for a swim, the water's very clean. Usually.

trenton real estate: A New and Exciting Life - 02/15/13 09:48 AM
I have a tendency to become attached to certain things. It's a bit silly, but I think this phenomenon was explained quite well on the T.V. show Seinfeld, where Jerry had trouble throwing out his favourite ratty old T-shirt which he had named Golden Boy. I become a little attached to my jeans.
My jeans go through a life cycle. First they are crisp and new, and I can wear them just about anywhere. I can strut about town in them. They fit well, look good, and I even wear them to work when I'm out on farms or with clients … (5 comments)

trenton real estate: Catching Fish While the Sun Shines in Quinte - 02/13/13 12:36 AM
Unfortunately, it's a bit too cold to be making hay at the moment, but it doesn't mean that one can't get out and about when the sun shines in winter. I took a stroll down to the Bay of Quinte and found a whole bunch of people who love to get out in the winter. These people can sit in little huts on a frozen bay, staring at a little hole they have bored into the ice, and occasionally catch a fish. It's not my cup of tea, but it seems to suit them just fine. This picture doesn't do the … (17 comments)

trenton real estate: Digging Out - 02/09/13 10:18 PM
I will admit that I'm not terribly enthusiastic about winter. I don't ski, I'm not a good skater, I don't like being cold, and the grey sky and lack of sunlight can be depressing. I tend not to spend a lot of time outside.
Yesterday was very pleasant though, it was sunny, there was no wind, and the temperature was only a couple of degrees below zero.
We had a lot of snow on Friday, apparently the biggest snowfall since 2008, so there was a lot of work to be done. First I had to retrieve my car which I had … (38 comments)

trenton real estate: My New Haircut - It's a Lot of Work. - 02/01/13 07:13 AM
Occasionally I must drive to Toronto for a meeting or to attend one event or the other. While I love the little town that I live and work in, it sometimes can be fun seeing the sights and sounds of the city. This particular meeting was taking place in the area near the intersections of Yonge and Wellesley. It's an interesting area, lots of neat stuff to see and do. Since I had parked the car uptown and taken the subway down, I had about an hour to spare. Who knew - public transport saves time.

After glancing at my … (13 comments)

trenton real estate: The Trenton Farmers Market - 01/30/13 05:48 AM
The Trenton Farmer's Market is the kind of place where a fellow like me loves to spend my dollars. The prices are great, the inventory is fantastic and the service is always friendly. It's one of those businesses that has a very loyal customer base, and for good reason.
I'm not all that great at preparing meals, but I can still churn out some good ones with the help of my friends at this long-time family owned and operated establishments. The trick is to let them do most of the work. Not only do they have one of those fantastic butcher shops … (3 comments)

trenton real estate: Multiple Offers - 01/24/13 06:09 AM
I work in one of the smaller real estate boards in Ontario, mostly smaller towns and rural areas. The pace tends to be a little slower than it would be in the Toronto Real Estate Board, and the situation of multiple offers on the same property does not happen with the same frequency as it would in larger, more urban boards where certain properties would be more in demand. In the last four years I have been involved in about 15 multiple offer situations, mostly representing a buyer. I have had only one listing that has attracted multiple offers. All but … (7 comments)

trenton real estate: Blogxhaustion - 01/23/13 04:25 AM
Thanks for all the emails. Apparently I have been missed on Active Rain and folks have been wondering what I've been up to. The truth is that I really haven't been up to very much. I have been working much as I regularly do, perhaps even harder than usual, I just seem to have developed an aversion to just about everything having to do with computers. I've become exhausted. Blogging is a lot like going to the gym, it's tough getting back on the wagon once you have fallen off. It doesn't help that the winter can make me feel particularly … (12 comments)

trenton real estate: Areas Where Trenton Could Improve - 10/02/12 06:09 AM
1) I was waiting for a traffic light to change from red to green earlier today. It's one of those annoying lights that take an unnecessarily long time to change, not really in rythm with the actual flow of traffic. I get caught here quite often, as it's on a route that I take regularly. I have noticed lately that many of the lights in Trenton seem to operate randomly, as if traffic patterns have changed quite a bit since they were last programmed. There are also increasing wait times to cross either of the bridges in town when the roads … (2 comments)
