Whenever I say I live in the Florida Keys everyone invariably says oh, Key West? No offense to Key West but it's not my kinda place and not where I live. I live in Marathon which is located at mile marker 47-55. Mile markers, or MM, is what is used to identify a location in the Keys. They begin at MM 0, the southernmost point, in Key West and end about MM128 along "the stretch" north of Key Largo.

Even though I made no sales today I count it all good. I spoke to all three of my kids, showed a house for sale, wrote listing papers and mailed out 65 letters. Not too shabby considering I am still suffering from a killer head cold.

Well not only is it Monday morning but I have a head cold that has been hanging around for two weeks now. Those of you that are also self employed understand that no work equals no pay and so I have been dragging myself to the office everyday. But here it is 9:27AM and I confess I am still in my robe and trying to muster the enthusiasm to take on the day.

Several major air carriers schedule regular service to both Key West and Marathon airports. Many flights are routed through the Miami International Airport, although some smaller airlines schedule direct flights from many major cities in Florida and the Bahamas. International flights must connect to one of these airlines in Miami. Check with the airline carrier for specific flight information. The Marathon Airport is located roughly 120 miles south of Miami. The Key West Airport is located about 180 miles southwest of Miami International Airport. Both airports offer car rental services.

That's how the Florida Keys have been described. And while the fishing is amazing and everyone from children to granny can find a style of fishing in the Keys, I see much more fishing than drinking going on, at least in Marathon. My associates in Key West may have something else to report.

There was a voice mail today from a man that said he wanted information about my property at _______ he named an address. It was not my listing but I called him back on the number he left which I recognized as a cell phone. When I asked what information he wanted and how he came to call me about this house (since it was not in fact my listing) he said just general information bedroom and baths and such. The city of Marathon has been dubbed the heart of the Florida Keys, a slogan that's obviously not as effective as it once was in drawing tourists here.
According to the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Marathon is the only district to see bed tax revenues decline for every month this fiscal year compared with the last. The Middle Keys district, which stretches from the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge to Long Key Bridge, is down 12.4 percent from last year's $2.16 million total. That's nearly $240,000, with two months worth of revenue not yet reported.
