northwest houston: Houston National Cemetery - Memorial Day 2010!! - 05/31/10 03:05 PM
Again this year I attended the Memorial ceremony at Houston National Cemetery!  Again it was an incredible experience.  You will notice in the pictures that I have a lot of pictures from the Gold Star Moms.  As most of you know our son got out of the Army a year ago after two tours of Iraq.  I can't even imagine being a Gold Star Mom as this means you have lost a son or daughter.
The ceremony was again a beautiful tribute to our fallen soldiers.  It was somber yet meaningful!  This year Governor Rick Perry delived the key not speech.  Governor Perry is … (12 comments)

northwest houston: Houston National Cemetery 2010 - Memorial Celebration - plan to attend!! - 05/28/10 09:36 AM
Last year was my first time to attend the Memorial Celebration that is held at Houston National Cemetery.  Last year was also one of the most meaningful Memorial Days that I ever remember.  I just wish I had made this a family tradition when my children were small.   I an planning on going again this year with a neighbor as both of our husbands have to work that day.  The pictures below are from last years ceremony.  I'm sure I will have a new batch of pictures after Monday.

northwest houston: A BIG THUMBS UP to our Recovery Workers from Hurricane Ike!! - 09/28/08 03:34 AM
I remember hearing after Hurricane Ike came through our area that some 2.1 million customers were out of power.  Just two weeks afterwards power has been restored to almost all the areas where it can still be restored.  I know there are still pockets without power but they become less ever day.  One of my clients wrote the letter below and asked me if I would post it on Active Rain.  She very eloquently Thanks all our recovery workers that made this possible in such a short time.  Please take the time to read her letter and give our service workers a big thumbs up.

northwest houston: Moving your Dog and Cat Cross Country to Northwest Houston! - 04/17/08 07:21 AM
Moving your Pets Cross Country to Northwest Houston! We have made two cross country moves with pets and it is an interesting experience.  We moved a dog named Rusty and a cat named Rosy from Colorado to North Carolina and then from North Carolina to Texas.   There are certain things that you can do to help your pet have a smooth transition to your new location.  Both Rusty and Rosy have passed on since that time but they died from old age with us.  I have included their pictures in this post.
One of the first things you will want to do is to … (26 comments)

northwest houston: My Parents - a layover at IAH and the Potato Patch in Houston TX! - 02/28/08 11:42 AM
My parents flew through Houston IAH yesterday on their way to the Borderfest in Hidalgo TX.  They had a 3 ½ hr. layover so we picked them up and took them to the Potato Patch for lunch.  They had a layover like this many years ago and my Mother still remembered this restaurant.  It is quite a memorable restaurant.  If you have not been there you should make it a point of checking it out.
The Potato Patch is the home of the Throw'd roll.  That's right they throw the homemade rolls across the room to you.  If you llook … (26 comments)

northwest houston: Property Taxes in Texas - they are high but the good news is no state income tax! - 02/27/08 11:12 AM
When people move to the Houston area from other states they are often surprised by our high property taxes.  We were in that group when we moved here 11 years ago.  What we found however is that Texas is one of seven states without an individual or corporate income tax. Most states derive about 40% of their revenue from income taxes, a third from sales tax and the rest from taxes on items such as business licenses and gasoline.  Since Texas doesn't have a state income tax they have a fairly high sales tax (in our area 7 to 8%) and high property taxes but that is offset by no state income … (17 comments)

northwest houston: What to bring to your Texas Real Estate Closing! - 02/25/08 09:18 AM
So you have your loan in place, the title commitment is in and you have completed any inspections etc. you wish to have on the property; now it is time to go to your real estate closing.  So what do you need to bring to the closing table?
The biggest item you will need to bring is of course money.  I have had a few clients who did not have to bring funds to the closing
table but those have been few and far between; even if they had a 100% loan.  Actually the    only two times that I remember that happening it … (29 comments)

northwest houston: In Houston it is time to prune your Crape Myrtles! - 02/18/08 07:56 AM

My first winter after moving to Texas I had a closing on Valentine's Day and we started talking about crape myrtles. My client stated that it was Valentine's Day; time to prune the crape myrtles.  Having moved from a colder climate it was amazing to me that you would start thinking about pruning in the month of February.   Ever since then when Valentine's Day happens I also think crape myrtle pruning time.  Actually in my research in writing this I found out that the best time to prune is the last of February or early March.  If you prune … (32 comments)

northwest houston: US Vets Houston - Serving the needs of homeless Veterans in Houston! - 01/10/08 05:31 AM
I wrote a post last Veterans Day on The Greatest Generation and a non-profit that helped soldiers visit their battleground campaigns.  One of my clients read it and sent me a response asking me to "Please remind people about the veterans that come home and have a hard time adjusting.  We are trying to make sure there are services for them when they return."
My client, Tom Mitchell is the director for a non-profit called US Vets Initiative Houston.  US Vets Houston is part of the US Vets initiative.  US Vets is the largest operator of homeless veterans programs in the … (21 comments)

northwest houston: Quirky things about homeownership! - 10/29/07 06:17 AM
So you are about ready to close on your house.  Here are some quirky things about homeownership you might want to keep in mind.
Future taxes - Your taxes could and probably will go up next year.  If you bought a brand new home you can be assured that they will go up as the year you bought the home the taxes were taxed on raw land with unfinished construction.  Even if you bought a re-sale home there is a very good chance your taxes will go up.  Harris and Montgomery Counties are very good at re-assessing our values on a … (20 comments)
